Patriots Player Departure The dream is dead: Patriots releasing Rourke

Only so many reps to go around. It’s going to be interesting to see what they do with 4 qb’s on the roster. If Milton shows anything, he’s not going anywhere. It would be hard to believe Mayo would be willing to go into the season with 1 vet and 2 rooks. That means Zappe is safe.

I still think Laube would've been a better pick there.

Disagree a new system with a new coaching staff is the perfect time to go with 1 vet and 2 rookies. This isn’t the QB being a coach on the field the vet QBs are learning too.
I think it’s Brissett, Maye, Milton.

Brissett, Maye and then Milton vs Zappe to see who is #3 and who is on the PS.

What am I going to do with all the dreams and drugs Ian sold me about this guy?

This is welcome news for Rourke.

Gives him a chance to possibly catch on with another team, learn their playbook, go through their OTAs and training camp.

Better than being waived on August 31.

I like the QB room with Brissett, Maye, Milton and Zappe.

Bailey may not make the camp cut either, they probably won’t carry 4 or if so not for long. They need to get the kids reps.

Bailey’s also 6’1” and the rest of these guys are trees, he’s an odd man out by default.

Rourke was never the answer…

Probably back to Canada IMO

Maybe it's me, but Milton feels like a repeat of Malik Cunningham last year. I would have rather kept Rourke through camp and seen if he had enough to be a solid 2/3.

Kind of weird IMO, I thought Zappe was definitely the odd man out. I like Zappe but I assumed they'd want to reboot the QB room dynamics completely and start fresh with 4 guys who no one has any real prior relationships with. I guess maybe they decided Zappe won't be a problem?

There's no way Zappe makes the 53 though. If he makes the PS the new rules allow the emergency 3rd QB to be a PS elevation this year, so that is good. Maybe they get a bit silly and carry 4 QBs if he shows promise in the new offense? IMO, Van Pelt's system is much more favorable to his strengths anyway... Then he could be the veteran backup behind Maye in 2025 and onward if Milton needs extended development time or just doesn't work out.

They are doing Rourke a favor.

This gives him a chance to catch on with another team.

Now they need to work on trading Zappe.
It's Maye, training camp is days away.

Between Milton and Rourke, Milton has the higher upside.

I don’t play Powerball often, I only do it when the jackpot is huge.

I could see Zappe getting a chance with another team to be their backup, but I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over it. So assuming Milton shows something, keep him and if Zappe makes it to the PS, great. If not, oh well.
