Some competition for Ryland:

The Patriots added a kicker on Thursday, with Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reporting the club has signed veteran Joey Slye. Slye has spent the last three seasons in Washington, hitting 19/24 (79.2%) of his field goals in 2023, including 7/9 from 40-49 yards and 3/5 from 50+. He was also 32/35 on extra points last season.

I know we had a thread on speculating about bringing him in, but it makes more sense to have this one now that he’s with the team and it’s marked among the signings.

Joey Slye would be interesting from a personal note. If you're not aware of his story it's really touching.

For reference he is from the town I live in and my son and him went to rival high schools. I believe he was a year ahead of my son. But saw him kick and that was some impressive **** for a high schooler. But his primary position was LB and my son was OL. Sadly have to admit that they weren't fans of each other. To put it mildly.

His brother sadly passed away from cancer while in high school. Like many kids they dreamed of playing in the NFL. While his brother was dying he promised his brother that he would play in the NFL. And he kept his promise. Have a lot of respect for that.

FYI the school's field was named in honor of his brother.

predictable move but relieved to see it.

Ryland was awful last year and the new kr rules kind of devalues the cannon leg. Still deserves a shot in preseason though. Or if we start out 0-4 id be tempted to keep him either way

“Competition”? Man Ryland is awful, the idea that he is likely here another season sucks.
He won't be one miss in TC and so long Chad Wife-left BB didn't even like him after that ridiculous Trade up to get him.

Rookie kickers are usually not reliable. Ryland definitely deserves a shot at applying what he learned towards winning the job next year.

I believe there are also 2 rookie placekickers invited to rookie minicamp tryouts this month.

New England Revolution ...

Hopefully between Slye, Ryland (year 2), and the UDFA tryout, we can get a kicker that can do better than the 64% hit rate that Ryland gave us last year. I'm not ruling Ryland out, but man... he's going to need to be LIGHTS OUT in camp and preseason for me to not hold my breath every time he goes out there. If it's close in camp, you gotta go Slye. He's only 27 too, so it's not like he'd be a short term solution if he works out.

I think Ryland already told us who he is, and as the saying goes when someone tells you who they are, you should believe them.
