I looked up ThanksDad McKay’s accomplishments as a football executive. His record is mediocre and that’s being kind. Those of us who’ve spent time in corporate America recognize this type of character - politically savvy glory hog whose greatest skill is avoiding responsibility for things that go wrong under his “leadership.” BB would be better off not getting this gig if Blank doesn’t recognize the inherent issue with this.

For Bill to come in and say "I want to rebuild this team the way I did with the Patriots 24 years ago" would be insane.

I don't see BB's philosophy on building defenses as the concern.

The concern is his inability/philosophy for how to build a competitive offense.

Bill Belichick derailed the Patriots franchise for years to come with his arrogance, terrible player personnel decisions, and resistance to evolve. Bill is a coaching dinosaur who can throw together a decent game plan to limit good offenses for a half or three quarters. He is averse to offense and in coaching 5 seasons before Tom Brady and 4 seasons after Tom Brady has had a top 15 offense TWICE (11 in 1994 and 6 in 2021).
The above are all irrefutable FACT - why would anyone want this guy to commandeer their billion dollar investment? Atlanta isn't going to have that game or two every season where the weather is a huge factor and closes the gap between Bill's deficient teams and more talented clubs.

Rich McKay is chairman of the NFL Competition Committee, which proposes rules changes. OF COURSE BB is going to bump heads with that guy -- probably early, often and pretty damn hard. For that reason alone I'm surprised he's a serious candidate in Atlanta.

Agree. The incumbents all have it pretty cushy despite reacting to 28-3 by keeping Dan Quinn and letting Kyle Shanahan go. They gotta have major juice with Arthur Blank.

I disagree with this. Bill said that he "would do whatever was best for the team". He was act point blank if he would give up GM responsibilities and did not say yes. So to think he would do that, you'd have to think Bill would ever believe that giving up that roll would be what is best for the team. I don't see a world where he would actually concede that.

Bill's been the GM of his teams since the second year he was with the Browns. I can't see him realistically agreeing to give that up.

My take on what Simmons was saying was that even if BB made some accommodations to keep some or most of the Arthur Blank cadre in the organization, Bill would never listen to them anyway.

IMO the end result would be organizational chaos with various factions knifing each other in the back.

Everyone would lose out. The whole Don Shula win record would be moot. BB would be fired long before it came into play.

Look at what happened here the last two seasons. IMO this kind of setup in ATL would be even worse than what we saw here.

Yeah, independent of hiring Bill, why Blank would want to keep the people running things? They haven't won more than 7 games since the 2017 season. A house cleaning is probably in order.

True, but it is musical chairs and the chairs are filling up. LV, DAL, PHL and PIT all kept their guys. TEN is picking someone else. LAC is sniffing Harbaugh's behind. ATL also gave Harbaugh a 2nd interview.

As far as we know, the only one showing interest in Bill is ATL. Teams that already have a strong GM in place or have hired new GMs IMO aren't likely landing spots for Bill. Bill may suggest he'll do what's best for the team, but no GM would want Bill looking over his shoulder.

I agree he can still game plan and scheme up a defense better than anyone but with that being said I think some of the personnel he relies on is outdated. We have seen it against Miami and the speed they have. Guys like Bentley and Tavai aren't going to be able to keep up with the crossers or backs out of the backfield. Also with more and more teams transitioning to the Shanahan stretch zone run scheme big fat guys like Godchaux are even less useful.

It also has to be hard to sell an owner on switching schemes when you're 72 years old and likely will only be around 2-3 years at most. The Eagles and Cowboys not moving on from their coaches really hurt Bill's best chances to win immediately. Ideally Bill would go to a "win now" franchise and just be able to coach and game plan and not have to worry about filling out a roster.

People don't want to admit it but Bill's last few years post-Brady have hurt his reputation for some.

Many don't feel confident giving Bill the reigns if they don't already have an established QB/offense. Espeically with his coaching staff choices.

Belichick at this point is best as just a defensive coordinator. It's telling that Philly and Dallas don't want him other.


His age doesn't help either. Along with everybody wanting offensive minded Head coaches.

This is in the context of a rebuild where you don't have a QB or WRs. When he had those guys and didn't have Brady, the offense was enough to win games with Cassel and others.

This isn't the problem in Atlanta. They have an excellent young WR, RB, TE and a good OL.

I agree on the LBs but Peppers and Dugger play so much at the LoS. I think hes adapted in that regard. I think you still need the 240-250lbs but I think they play too much here.

Teams need a guy like God as hes not a traditional NT but a DT (which to Bill's credit has phased out of his scheme)

I agree, but they're also connected in a way. I think there's legitimacy to the argument that it's harder to find players for this offensive system, because fewer and fewer players are exposed to it, in college or the pros. That doesn't mean there are fewer players who COULD run it, but it just makes it harder to identify them. There's also a case to be made that you have to have a very specific type of QB to run it consistently, and that type is Tom Brady. I don't think I go that far, but overall I think they'll have better luck finding good offensive players if they're running a more popular system.

If you get Belichick, you know the team is gonna be prepared, situationally sound, good game plans and adjustments. If you're Philly, Dallas, Buffalo, teams that are ready to win, you should do everything you can to bring him in.

I don't think that is completely true anymore. Penalties have increased the last 3 years and special teams has been a disaster.
