ICYMI: Patriots Officially Assign Cam Newton’s Jersey Number
Greg M. Cooper - USA TODAY Sports
Well for those of you who are anxious to run out and buy a Cam Newton Patriots jersey but we’re waiting on his number assignment, its finally happened.
On Wednesday, the Patriots formally announced Newton’s contract and with it came the knowledge he will sport the same number “1” that he wore during his first nine seasons with the Carolina Panthers.
As NESN’s Adam London pointed out today, everyone on social media immediately reacted with the same bad joke about how mascot Pat Patriot is going to need a new number, including yours truly.
Don’t cry because its over, smile because it happened. @PatPatriot https://t.co/u7sBKtjHsj

CLNS Media’s Evan Lazar later shared some research on who was the last Patriots player to wear number 1 before Newton.
Here’s your first Tony Franklin reference of 2020.
The last player to wear #1 for the #Patriots was Tony Franklin in 1987, who apparently was a barefoot kicker. Can’t believe they still did that in 1987. Maybe @TMurph207 can tell you about him. pic.twitter.com/t4K5awEDze

According to Football Reference, just three players in the Patriots 60 year history have worn jersey number 1 before Newton, all were kickers.
As of this posting, it remains unknown if Pat Patriot asked for any compensation for the jersey switch.
