Still a bit sad, and telling, that Mayo isn't interviewing any current O asst. coaches for the promotion.
Shows how much trust is in the existing system.

Breer also says that Covington is the “strong favorite” at DC.

I wonder why we didn't hear about these interviews.

Updated Pats tracker to Include Shane Waldron & Gerald Alexander.

Updated NFL Coaching tracker with a few more names - still a work in progress & is not complete.

Gerald Alexander??? Please, we already had a garbage O for the last few years. No thank you.
Isn't Alexander a defensive backs coach? I assume he was interviewed for the DC job.

Interesting that Mayo is not going for any big names for coordinators. I suspect he wants to maintain control and not be unintentionally undermined

Misread the tweet then. Did not know that. Will correct the tracker

NFL coaching tracker in post 2 mostly up to date

Covington seems to be a great coach from what you hear.
I'm curious though, how often do DL coaches get DC jobs?
It's almost always guys that come from LB or DB, because you need to have a sense of the whole field, and it's so much about coverage in the league now.

He was the outside linebackers coach before taking over the d-line in 2020.

Current Defensive Coordinators that coached the D-Line in college or the pros at some point of their careers
Kacy Rodgers - Tampa Bay
Dan Quinn - Dallas
Patrick Graham - Las Vegas
Clint Hurtt - Seattle
Ryan Neilsen - Jacksonville
Steve Spagnuolo - Kansas City

Yes, it’s rare. I believe only 3 of the 2023 DCs were primarily DL guys, but none of them went straight from DL to DC. All three worked for defensive HCs. From entering the NFL to first DC job:

Clint Hurtt
2015-2016: Bears OLB coach (3-4, so still edge rushers)
2017-2021: Seahawks AHC & DL coach
2022: Seahawks DC

Ryan Nielsen
2017-2020: Saints DL coach
2021: Saints AHC & DL coach
2022: Saints Co-DC and DL coach
2023: Falcons DC

Dan Quinn
2001-2002: 49ers defensive quality control
2003-2004: 49ers DL coach
2005-2006: Dolphins DL coach
2007-2008: Jets DL coach
2009-2010: Seahawks AHC & DL coach
2011-2012: University of Florida DC & DL coach
2013: Seahawks DC

I’m wondering that we don’t hear of any team asking to interview Steve B for a DC position.
….
Or are we just not listening/posting that info?

I think the league assumes he was just a proxy for BB.
And, clearly the league is not banging down BB's door (unless BB has shot down all other requests)
It appears the Falcons are seeking other options too.

Updated the NFL Tracker
added Green Bay, who fired DC Joe Barry
added Mike Sullivan to Raiders OC search

No news/updates on the Patriots front.

He did coach linebackers for the Pats a few seasons back.
