Jeremy Fowler said the Patriots won't try to resign Onwenu

On one hand, I think they should bring him back because otherwise RT and LT are both vacant.

On the other hand, he'll be very expensive whether it's a re-sign or a franchise tag, and he's not an elite RT in the first place. The draft has a good crop of tackles. And maybe they think with a full offseason, one of Lowe or Wheatley can become the new RT.
If there is one place they need to spend money on free agents, it's the offensive line. Whether they draft a QB high or bring in a veteran, that QB cannot be successful unless a veteran OL is in front of him giving him time.

They have plenty of money on the cap to sign Onwenu and the draft capital to get the best lineman on the board in the second or third round.

How a report like this can be on the street before they even hire a GM is beyond me.

After his exit presser, on the way out, Belichick was overheard saying he was not resigning Onwenu.

I found a mysterious tweet.

Then we don’t have a LT or RT. Not surprised that nothing will change personnel wise from the BB era. If we don’t re-sign Onwenu, then I don’t want a QB at 3. Dude would just get killed game in and game out. Trade down and draft Alt, Fashanu or Nabers.

How about - Onwenu is one of the best players on this crappy team, so locking down some of the best players to start a new regime will be their priority.

How about - he has to want to stay here. Unless they're coming in with a huge 5/100 package with a bunch of guaranteed money, I don't see it, because some team is going to pay that guy a ton of money. I don't see Bob Kraft doing that.

Yeah, well Jeremy Fowler says dogs can't look up.

(Like Big Dave)

That's what local media would do, but Fowler at ESPN has a better reputation that that. He got this from someone inside Foxboro now, but it's weird because they don't even have a GM yet.
And they might not have one when free agent decisions are made.

Let's stop making believe that the team can't make free agent decisions without the phantom GM. If Bill need more help, there are probably a half dozen advisors that he could hire for a couple of months.

Someone on this board has been asking the question for months.

Is Onwenu worth $20M AAV as a RT?

Is Onwenu worth $20M a year as a RG, given that we have a top rookie RG in Sow?

They got him in the 6th Round. They can do it again (although maybe in an earlier Round). They shouldn't overpay for him. Just my humble opinion.

But remember it was Bill who didn't want to sign top players and Kraft was always willing to spend remember, that's what we were told for years.

Imagine how stupid Kraft will look if he's frugal with the big contracts and Bill is in Atlanta spending like a mad man.

Generally they have done a good job finding OL talent on the whole the mid-to-late rounds, yeah.

Why not tag and trade him?

They just need to have a solid O-line Coach or Coach's to bring out their full potential.

for Onwenu, I'd start at 5/90... 18 a year aav, 25m signing bonus, 55m fully guaranteed... and he would be moved to RT permanently... no more guard...

set the line at
Rookie LT - Cole Strange - David Andrews - Sidi Sow - Michael Onwenu
