Mayo's Coaching Staff [Discuss Coaching Candidates Here!]

I thought the offense really protected rookie Mac and did not ask him to do to much. Rookie Mac might lead a team to the playoffs as a wild card, but not win in the playoffs.
Well yeah, while the biggest reason for the shellacking by the Bills in the 2021 playoffs is because of the D's inability to force any sort of stop, the offense absolutely failed to do anything in the first half as the game got out of hand fast.

If they are able to turn it around from 4-13 to a playoff berth in 2024 while letting a rookie QB develop on the bench, I'd be happy.

look at the schedule. ouch.

If you remove the divisional games, it's:

Home - Texans, Colts, Chargers, Rams, Seahawks
Away - Cardinals, Bears, 49ers, Bengals, Jaguars, Titans

Does not seem too bad. 11 teams - 3 of them are playoff teams, 4 of them were only 1 game above .500, and the last 4 had losing records. 2 of the 3 playoff teams are at home. 3 out of 6 away opponents had losing records in 2023. Only one team in this group has a top 10 defense (49ers).

As always, the divisional games have the most importance, but beyond them, this slate is not killer.

I wouldn't mind if BOB stayed - just for continuity and an older/experienced HC-caliber coach to help Mayo.
Also, its clear BOB knows offense, players like him. And I don't think he called bad games. He was just so hand cuffed with those useless QB's, and WR's, and turntable OL.
It's far better giving him some new talent and counting on his professionalism, than bringing someone completely new in and starting over with way more unknowns.

I also think Troy Brown might not be the best for the reboot, but who knows how much the talent, injuries, and BB's meddling affected the WR's lately?

It’s been quiet AF on the coaching staff.
Guess we will hear a lot more when BB takes a job.
after Belichick takes a job, and after the SB, after which many position coaches will be available.

I’m concerned that’s a double edge sword, if you wait til after the Super Bowl maybe coaches you didn’t move fast enough on catch on other staffs.

Yeah, part of my optimism about Mayo coming on so quickly was that it gave the team a leg up on forming a staff, whereas other teams largely needed to wait 1-2 weeks to get all of their HC interviews done, hire their guys and start forming their staffs under their HCs. But now we are only a week and a half away from that time and haven’t heard anything on assistants, so that gap is closing pretty quickly.

Do you think that position coaches are free to sign with other teams for 2024?

If they are promotions then yes.
Then rules should be changed. For an assistant under contract for a team in the playoffs to be able to move to another team is simply wrong.

"Sorry coach if I wasn't paying attention to the game plan. I have to do some research for my new boss"

As for staff, I’d expect the Krafts to empower Mayo to fill out the staff as he sees fit, with some coaches likely to follow Belichick, and for Mayo to conduct a full search for an offensive coordinator. While it’ll likely include incumbent Bill O’Brien, who could also wind up going with Belichick, I think the Patriots are going to be very open-minded in trying to find the right guy for what’ll probably be Mayo’s most important hire.

And, just to wrap this up, one other thing worth noting is that Belichick’s sons, defensive play-caller and linebackers coach Steve, and safeties coach Brian, have both already been offered the opportunity to return to the team for 2024. Mayo and the elder son (Steve) have grown close as they’ve collaborated to run the Patriots’ defense the past five years.

So it sounds like Mayo wants to keep Steve and Brian, and is also open to picking a brand new OC. Interesting...

I can really feel some much higher optimism if I watch us go out and bring in a young offensive mind entirely outside the organization.

That tells me Mayo clearly recognizes the offensive approach has not been working, and needs completely scrapped.

It's a good system, but it's complicated. Run at the highest level (i.e. with guys like Brady, Edelman, James White and Gronk) it can be lethal. But that's obviously very hard to get all of those guys and get them all on the same page.

It seems like it would be simpler to modernize a bit, go with someone like Zac Robinson from the Rams or maybe Klint Kubiak from SF (previously, Minnesota) - their systems would make it simpler to get rookies into the mix and also maybe widen the free agent pool a bit. Also might make it easier on the incoming QB. If you're starting over with a new rookie QB, or at least a QB who's never seen your current system before, it makes sense to change systems then.

I would be interested in Zac Robinson, the QB Coach and Pass Game Coordinator of the Rams. He was also drafted by the Pats in 2010 so he would have some baseline familiarity with the offensive system that the team is used to running currently that he could use to translate into what he wants to run. He’s been a somewhat under-the-radar name for a couple years. They’ve done a good job being able to plug guys in quickly - Odell’s playoff run, Puka’s breakout rookie season. He also did a masterful job adding Baker Mayfield mid-season and getting him playing really well. May be a good choice for a new QB.
I would like us to poach rams wr coach or packers wr coach.

Packers is even more impressive what they have done with a young team.

We are dinosaurs on offensive side. Need fresh blood. 4 people who absolutely need to be let go are Troy brown, cam Achord, judge and yates.

when they moved on from Bill, I kind of thought we would have a total refresh. it is a tad concerning to me that basically they just want to run the same patriots system minus bill.

I guess they must believe the "patriot way" still works. just that Bill the GM failed at drafting/free agency. Guess we will see if the patriots methodology on building a roster at least on the offensive side of the ball changes. will they get aggressive in FA/Drafts to really tackle the offensive roster issues?

or will they continue to treat it as an afterthought...
Why do we feel Jerod mayo us unqualified while demeco Ryan is perfect.

Don't break something that ain't broken and that one is defense . If Bill leaves and takes his sons do you think you can compete with an entire new OC, DC , ST and rookie QB with the most talentless base . We need Mayo to keep the remaining 50% of team , i.e defense to work at either 80-100% of what it did earlier and revamp offense.

I think all this is because offensively we have not made a hire nor on GM side . So Mayo pick is also gettibg panned.

I personally think for the state we are in right now, we need a stabilizing coach and that's Mayo.

We need to really scout all upcoming wide receiver coaches and college OCs and try to hit a homerun there. We have gone conservative on HC , defense and GM. Time to punt a but on OC and ST.
