We Are TWO Players Away - Overpay In Trades For QB and WR.

I agree with almost every post so far, get a new mediocre QB, draft one, sign Tee Higgins if possible, or draft a top WR. Draft Malik Nabers of LSU. This kind of thing. Let's bring in Justin Fields if he's available.

2 players.

Don't think you'll find WRs in FA other than possibly Higgins.

In all seriousness I hope something goes wrong with the Justin Herbert Chargers relationship. I would give them whatever the hell they want for him. 3 first rounders? Fine. 5? Fine. Nothing matters without a quarterback.
That 27-27 record impresses you huh?

We are "two players away" from - what? - a .500 record...maybe...and a less attractive draft position. Playoff aspirations are at this juncture pointless. ALL focus from this point forward should be on getting better players for next year and beyond, and on arriving at a decision re Mac, not on overpaying for yet more castoffs and burnouts bound to disappoint. It would be more constructive to focus on identifying candidates for next year's new GM, with some attention paid to possible HC replacements if Bill declines to limit himself to HC responsibilities, as the Krafts ought to insist he do.

Until we hire and empower someone with the ability to improve this pathetic roster free of interference from Belichick, who has manfestly failed to get the job done, we are just wasting time.

You are correct. One of these statements isn't true.

We'd be 2-2 with Mahomes or Brady.

We are a terrible, terrible team.
Huh?

Look, I don’t think Mac is HIM, but, I’m also not sure Brady himself in his prime could work with this O-line and a pressure rate north of 50%.

Now, a true dual threat QB maybe but…who?

I don’t see a meaningful trade being available at QB.

It’s not a talented football team and hasn’t been for a while.

Gotta find a way to beat the Saints or it’s gonna get ugly fast.
This is also assuming Mac isn’t at all responsible for some of those stats. Where Tom steps up into the pocket and delivers a laser, Mac “is pressured” and runs out of the pocket and then does something stupid like throw back across the numbers, multiple times.

Tank Train, baby.

Manifestly won more SBs than anyone else, ever.

OK, that's a start.

Would we be a competitor for being the Championship Game with those two players?
===========================
Would be compeititive for the PLAYOFFS with one of these players? What about Hill and a RT? or Hill and a CB?
With Patrick Mahomes and the current offense we would be a Super Bowl competitor because Mahomes is that good. He really is the only QB that could make us a contender right now. We still don't make the playoffs with just Hill or Hill and a tackle or corner.

At the moment, I have little interest in 2024. There seems to be little interest in 2023, other than hoping for a high draft choice and few of us homers.

I guess that we need a poll on who wants to just give up on this year and who wants to trade for players that might put us in contention to have 7-10 wins.

LET'S BE MORE CLEAR
Are you really saying that a NFL quality starting RT isn't available for a 1st round draft choice? What about a WR? What about a backup QB? If you think that players COULD be available, then the question IS NOT whether we can compete, but rather, on whether we are willing to pay the price.

Isn't the question really about "overpaying" and having no guarantee of success (as if there is ever a guarantee on a trade).

His head coach is a dunce. It his arm strength, mobility, accuracy, and general attitude that impress me.
He doesn’t win. Until he does all the rest is just window dressing.

Manifestly won more SBs than anyone else, ever.
Indeed he did. Jim Brown was once a great runner, wasn't he though? and my '69 Impala was my favorite car ever.

To be clear, as I have said, I would be happy to have Bill back as HC, but absolutely not at GM. No way. Whatever GM skills he may once have had have long since entirely eroded.

Playoffs????

What???

Those skills don’t erode.

Who has a better record since Justin Herbert entered the league: Justin Herbert (.500) or Bill Belichick?

Confused Robert Downey Jr GIF

No one is going to give away a QB to suddenly make it all better. Why would they? What level of overpayment would the buying team have to pay in order to ply even a mid-level QB away from a team. What does that do to cap management?

At best, you're going to get an underperformer, which they have now, so far anyway. At worst, you're going to overpay for damaged goods or a locker room cancer, one that the selling team is happy to be rid of.

Guys, there's no quick quick fix. It takes years to build a team to win. The foundation for the 2001 team was already here with Vinateri, Bruschi, Law, McGinest and Milloy, and they all lost the super bowl in 1996. It took that 2001 FA class of Terrell Buckley, Mike Compton, Bryan Cox, Marc Edwards, Larry Izzo, David Patten, Roman Phifer, Anthony Pleasant, Antowain Smith, and Mike Vrabel to come in and bring new blood to the team. Oh, and they found a QB on the bench, too, plus drafted Richard Seymour and Matt Light.

You wanna know how to build a team? There's your roadmap, right there. That part of the game has not changed. Bring in 2-3 top tier OL, a bonafide WR that stresses defenses, a top QB that doesn't give the ball away, a true 3rd down back, all while keeping this defensive core together and get it all under the cap. That's how many players they are away. Never mind the top two defenders just went down with maybe season ending injuries. No big deal, next man up.
Never claimed a team would I’m just saying if we had a good qb we are probably 2-2

We are two players away: QB and WR.
========================
Should we spend a couple of top picks and secure a couple of players?

If you think that there are NO players available at any price, so be it. CLEARLY, the management should be fired is they can't the players to improve this team.

I understand that for some of you, all the matters is the Super Bowl, and the playoffs aren't even worth trying for, so we should trade our players and wait until next year. That is NOT the New England Patriots. You will be disappointed as long as Kraft owns the team, because that will never be his approach.
==========================
I'm NOT suggesting which player should be traded for. That depends on availability and price.

What I am suggesting is that we COULD greatly improve the team with a major trade or two. Obviously, we also have the minor trades which are long shots. Sometimes, we get a player like Lowe who can contribute (I see a RB addition in our future).

Who is going to trade away a really good QB? I would be more than willing to go along with overpaying, I just don’t believe there will ever be one available. ( Sucking for …….. 1st Rd pick) looks like their only real opportunity to get a franchise QB, and although I can live with that I don’t believe they will let it happen.

We're a lot more than 2 players away. If Gonzalez, Judon and Jones X3 were healthy I'd roll with our defense. Our offense is at a minimum 3 OL-men, a QB, a Faulk/White RB and 2 WRs away. Bill the coach is still the best at managing the X's and O's around the sins of Bill the GM.

Those skills don’t erode.
Let's suspend the pingpong banter. Are you saying that Bill is at this point in time a successful GM who deserves to keep his job? If so, what evidence can you offer in the time frame from Brady's departure (or a year or so before) until now in support of this view?
