Mac and the "It Factor"

Three Years Mac should be deactivated!
I'm for drafting a QB round 1. I just think if you need a cheap QB to start the season, since you already have Mac under a cheap contract, you keep him to start until the rookies is ready. I think it makes no sense to draft a QB and bring in a vet to play 3 games just because you hate Mac.

Again, I completely get where you're coming from, but I'm the opposite. I get Higgins in free agency and draft a QB in the first. I've come around to the argument that you just keep drafting until you hit your QB. But when you know it's not him, move on quickly (after 3-4 years).
I'm not against the idea of continually using draft resources until you find someone, but it tears up a team. You can also find these guys in the 2nd round if you win the lottery (Jalen Hurts, Drew Brees). But--those are the only 2 2nd rounders to succeed in the last 25 years. Unless you count Geno Smith.

Yeah, I don't think that's a great approach.

Just curious, who do you think the reclamation projects are that worked out in the last 10 years or so?

Wow--you just shot a hole through my theory, LOL.

Geno Smith, Drew Brees, Matt Schaub, Carson Palmer, Alex Smith, Kirk Cousins, maybe Matt Hasselbeck. Very short list indeed. May have to settle for a younger Ryan Tannehill. Can we trade a #1 for a Jared Goff type? A QB whose team is disenchanted with him? God forbid that we give a picks for Carson Wentz type. This is not all that promising.

They should try to find a Kurt Warner in the CFL.

Yeah, that was my thinking too. Going the vet approach, you're really shooting for a middle-of-the-road type QB and if you hit the lotto ticket, you get Drew Brees. I bet percentage wise, you're really no better off than a 1st round QB pick.

why is DET disenchanted with Goff?

At this point the only young reclamation project type QBs that wouldn't cost a fortune to get are some of the other guys in Mac's draft class. Fields, Wilson, and Lance could all be had for pretty cheap with maybe a higher premium on Fields. I think Trevor Lawrence has shown enough to still probably pull a first rounder if the Jags randomly decided to pull the plug. Other than that you could probably get Kyler for maybe a second? Other than that you have the usual cast of 30 somethings that have been banged up and would be moving onto their third or fourth team to fight for a starting role next summer.

I would say Fat Matt's Offenses seems more aggressive than the current that you think would be better.
I said I thought BOB would improve his mechanics, but yes I think everyone thought or should I say hoped he would improve their offense.

2 words. Colin Kapernick (not serious)

Kind of nuts when you think about it. Kirk Cousins, Andy Dalton, and some doofus named Tom Brady are the only other names that stand out from round 3 to 7.

It's almost impossible to find a good QB. Only 5 to 8 teams are allowed to have one in any given decade.

I wrote a Goff-type.

The Rams were disenchanted with him. I was wondering if another team had a good QB that they wanted to discard because they weren't in love.

Maybe I should have asked for a Brees-type? A future HOFer that was tossed aside quickly?

That's why I like our recent focus on having an elite defense. All we need is a serviceable offense.
This is where I'm at. Get a #1 WR, find a middle of the road QB who isn't afraid of his own shadow, and we're good to go.

Off the top of my head, I think that was Deshaun Watson. Or maybe Carr? Other reclamation projects at this point: Wentz (nope), Foles, Gardner Minshew, soon-to-be Zach Wilson or Mills.

If the choice is between this lot and drafting a QB and hoping it hits, I’ll take the draft.

Mac would be dealt in that situation, even if it's a late-round pick. If the 49ers could move Lance and get something, the Patriots certainly could as well. But moving him ahead of that would make more sense because he would be at the end of his rookie deal and if it reached that point, it would be far too contentious to keep him here.

Yeah, I just hate moving him and then having to get a veteran to start the season because those guys are almost always terrible.

I wonder if future top-prospects will prefer to get drafted elsewhere so they don’t have to play in Tom’s shadow. This is the one downside to justifiably giving the man a statue. Lost the game you needed to win to get into the playoffs? A stone/bronze Brady statue looms over you and your failures as you leave the stadium.

I like Parcell’s style of team-building for the Patriots. Draft for a simplified game with good protection and a good defense, target specific qualities in a QB, don’t chase college highlight reels of flashy **** you know will be a pick-6 in the NFL.

Not to go full arm-chair but I think a lot of NFL quarterback scouts are charlatans grandfathered into the job. I don’t watch college but sometimes it’s painfully obvious some of these 1st round picks are going to be busts or journeyman.

It's a lot easier to find an elite receiver to prop up your young QB than vice versa.

Mac may never be more than a backup. But the offensive talent isn't doing him any favors.

You can win games with average QBs. But talent needs to be around them. See Goff, Daniels, tannehill..
