Schelerth: "Welker was literally undressed on every play by the Ravens D"

The Dolphins best player wishes he was a Patriot. He wishes he was a champion. He wishes he was part of a dynasty.

Ronnie Brown wasnts to play for the Patriots? That's news to me.

Given his situation, Ronnie Brown wants to be able to play for anyone right now.

An hour or more after the game, ESPN did a segment on how the Ravens were able to take Welker out of the game. They showed 3 plays and in 2 of them the Ravens DB had Welker's shirt and held it keeping Welker from getting seperation. I find it hard to believe they were the only times and that other DB's weren't doing similar tactics with other Patriots recievers.
So, unlike most others, I don't blame the Ravens for being upset with the call when they were called for holding Watson. If the refs are going to let similar things go on all game, why wouldn't they be upset when it's called on the 2nd biggest play of the game? How are DB's suppsoed to know what they can and can't do when it isn't called the same throughout the game?

"literally undressed"?

He's fast. He gets undressed and dressed pretty quickly.

Good to see a team was finally smart enough to beat decent cover guys on Welker. It's obvious Welker can beat slow linebackers and terrible nickle guys. this is what happens when you put a good DB on him.

What are you saying? When you put a good DB on him, Welker launches the guy into the stratosphere? OK.

I see a lot of talk about illegal contact and holding etc from Pats fans around here, when it was your guys doing it the Colts recievers you were singing a different tune.

When EVERYONE could do it, it was fine. If they allow the patriots defenders to play that way as well I'm all for it. I don't much like this panzy "DONT TOUCH ME BECAUSE IM ON OFFENSE" flag throwing in the NFL these days. I wish it would go back to before Polian cried his eyes out.

It pisses us off because it is NOT an even playing field. No way would the pats defenders get away with crap like that, they can't even get away with getting tackled from behind by the receiver!

Back then it was legal. Polian cried, and they changed the point of emphasis. Get your story straight.

No it wasn't legal, they just didn't call it as often. It helped you get a SB so quit crying about it now is all I'm saying.

Well, like all the rules, it needs to be called across the board.

Was on the felger show. Said the above and said the ravens had no reason to complain about offiiciating

glad someone saw it even if it was this guy

Gawd....and Schlereth was the biggest screaming a-hole when that whole "cameragate" thing was going on.......The crybaby ravens and the media today (especially ESPN) Need to SHUT THE F((K up!!!!......IF anything Balt was getting away with rape and murder last night!!!! Tons of holding.....with NO CALLS......Finally they woke up and made the right call against Balt on Watson in the endzone. How anyone can watch that play and NOT SEE holding....Is beyond me!!!

I am amazed at the outpouring of little ****ies and sore a##ed losers in the form of the media and fans of other teams......That their is a CONSPIRACY for the Pats to win.....and the REFS are on OUR side???? This is so frigging laughable and insane.....Has anyone forgotten how we were penalized RIDICULOUSLY against the Dolts? And again....How many NON-Calls were there AGAIN last night.......All these d-bags need to shut up....they are embarrassing themselves.....

Schlereth really came to the Pats defense on sportscenter. He shot down any talk of a conspiracy. I was impressed. Especially since he was really hating the Pats when spygate happened.

The holding rule, if I can make a comparison, is like holding in hockey during the mid 90's. The rule was in place but was never enforced. In the NHL it lead to low scoring, crappy games. They made it a point of emphasis a few years ago and since then scoring has increased.

In the NFL it's a similar thing: when Polian threw his weight around to have the league enforce the calls, it was simply because the Patriots had a physical defense and took advantage of a rule that never got called.

Now, however, holding IS a point of emphasis and it's been noted time and again that it could be a reason why Belichick and Pioli went out of their way to put together a fantastic receiving core: when the advantage is given to the offense, you have to put together a squad that can capitalize on that.

All that said, when a team holds on almost every play like the Ravens did last night the officials aren't going to call it...it would be ridiculous to see a flag on every down. And unfortuntely that's what it'll take, because I have a feeling other teams are looking at this game film thinking 'hey, we can do that too.' Hopefully the Patriots are all over the league to do something about this, because we'll be seeing it every week if it's not adressed.

That's all well and good but why couldn't he say this on Mike and Mike this morning. All he did was bash the Pats while they said that despite the "lousy" calls a "conspiracy" was unrealistic.

Mike and Mike lost a TON of credibility this AM,.,.....so much so, that I will not listen to them any longer......They were both *****ing and moaning about the BAD calls....and how....they could see how people could think that there was a conspiracy going on ....and Goodell may have to answer for it....ARE THESE F'ING MORONS for real????? They are so biased against the Pats it is unreal......That little ****y Greenie blatantly comes out and says how much he hates the Patriots........now when there is any "questionable" plays in a game.....he cries "Conspiracy"

Facts are ....Baltimore showed up emotionally charged and frothing at the mouth last night.....Kyle Boller played the game of his life last night....and got VERY lucky several times......McGahee is an AHOLE....but a great talent....and since our defense decided to take the first 3 quarters off last night.....he looked even better than he was........Our secondary play was sketchy all night.....I have very LITTLE confidence when the opposing QB drops back to pass right now.......and lastly....though I am not trying to sound like a Baltimore ****y.....there were a ton of calls that should have been called against Balt last night....that were not.....alot of holding and a few PI's.......bottom line is......Espn crew sucks..

the hold (or call it illegal contact if you want.....past 5 yard cushion) was blatant there man......you need to look at it again......

Well then they should be calling it every other play then right? This is ridiculous....if they hold....they get PENALIZED....PERIOD.....after about 15 holding penalties they will wake up and stop doing it.....actually if you call them every time you see it....it could have the reverse effect....and they will get gun shy to try to clutch and hold........Refs need to enforce this EVERY time it happens......and it was "allowed" way too much last night.....

Your missing my point. I know that was holding on Watson. So were the 2 plays they showed on Welker and likley there were others. My point is that why isn't it called consistently throughout the game? How's a DB coach supposed to tell his guys how to cover when at some points hitting/grabbing after 5 yards is OK and then suddenly it's called?

Yup, that's exactly what I thought after the Pats did it to the Colts.

Wasn't a point of emphasis in 2004. Polian *****ed and moaned and made it a point of emphasis. Pats built an offense around that point of emphasis. Unlike the Colt's the Pats can play it both ways they just need to know what "rules' the officials are using.

I agree. The whole problem with PI calls in the NFL is you can see 2 plays virtually alike in a game or 2 different games and one is called PI and the other isn't. I also think part of the problem is the NFL likes to make rules too complicated. Like you can put a hand on a guy but if it impeeds the reciever it's PI. It may seem easy but try doing it at game speed.

Re: Schelerth:"Welker was literally undressed on every play by the ravens D"

Definition of literally includes:
Quote:
(intensifier before a figurative expression) without exaggeration; "our eyes were literally pinned to TV during the Gulf War"

What's that from, wikipedia? "Literally" means "word for word". It also means actually, or upholding the exact meaning of a word, concerned chiefly with facts, or avoiding exaggeration, metaphor, or embellishment.

-American Heritage Dictionary.

For some reason (through sports announcers, I believe), literally has been given the wrong meaning. In your example, in order to literally pin one's eyes to the TV, you'd need some pins and some eyeballs. Please don't do that.
