Malik Cunningham = QB1

He played against scrubs and only threw 4x, but he looked much more promising than I envisioned.

He showed some poise, you can tell he's 24 years old, the stage isn't too big for him, he looks confident. He led them down the whole field for a TD.

His one incompletion was a major league throw, on the full run, 20+ yards downfield, on the money.

He ran very successfully, both planned runs and scrambles.

There was a lot to like.

He was a former RB, just because you can run doesn’t mean you should. Nothing can defend the perfect throw and catch.

Running is nice and all… passing is the job. Lamar Jackson can’t get past the first round, and he has been on one of the best teams in the AFC.
That's true, however being able to throw on the run and break down defenses is just an element you can't coach. Lamar I admit has had his opportunities.

Which we have no idea if he can do or not.

That was in reference to the style of play from a Running QB not necessarily Cunningham. The kid is a raw product.. he'll develop.

Being able to dissect a playoff caliber defense from the pocket with tight window throws, when opponents hem you in and prevent you from running is a skill you need to win in the playoffs.

It's exactly why Lamar fails miserably in the playoffs, his inability to pass accurately from the pocket is exposed... and now you think think Lamar-lite deserves a roster spot after 4 preseason passes.

We've jumped the preseason shark...

Steve Young was great.. but he wasn't nearly the athlete
On the web, there were several different times for Young in the 40 yard dash. The slowest I found was a 4.55 clocked by the Cowboys Gil Brandt. Jerry Rice said that Young had run a 4.3 in training camp. Bottom line, Young was fast.

I think there is one difference between young and the others that has the poster confused.

Cunningham will be a valuable scout team QB and may contribute as a WR as well. I’m glad he is with the team.
Absolutely!! As I've said he brings what's been missing for a few years. EXCITEMENT.. BB gave him far more UDFA guaranteed money becuase other teams wanted him. We have to start holding on to these types of players.. I've said this... I expect Mac to have a great season.. and the offense to look good.

Say Mac has 29 TDs and 8 INTs.. that's Daniel Jones money he'll command. I don't see the team shelling out 40 Mill. Now you've had Cunningham on the roster for 1 season or 2 by then and he will be much more primed. IMO

No dispute about young not being able to move.. but he was no where in the stratosphere athletic wise of course of an RG 3, Lamar is all I'm saying. Just like those guys weren't the accurate passer young was either. Steve Young was a great QB and no dispute to that. Just the guys today are on another level athletic wise. The training, all the modern technology that guys have at thier disposal today that players didn't have in the 90s. That's all I'm saying..

Cunningham may be the backup to Zappe at that point but I expect more QB’s to be drafted by then.

Agreed, however it will all depend on Zappe and Cunningham continue to develop by that point. None we have to stash him somewhere on the roster.

I don’t think so. Bill continued to draft QB’s when we had an ok QB by the name of Brady. A tiny running QB is helpful when the OL are 3rd stringers and we need someone to emulate guys like Lamar. It will all look different if Mac doesn’t sign a long term contract.

Yes, I'm agreeing with you. But you have to put emphasis on the fact BB pretty much got into what bidding war over him. So he did not just sign him for a try out. He likely envisions role for him down the line. You uttered my point when said about Mac having a good season.. he won't be playing for peanuts.. come contract time/5th yr option pick up

BB likes the potential he brings as a WR in the slot. A good one is worth it. He did the right thing.

Malik earned another chance to display his talent and in more facets going forward in this preseason. I want to see Jones predominantly in the next two games and Malik getting a quarter in each to add more reps to the Pats tape. I do NOT want to see Crappe anywhere near a huddle until the final, meaningless preseason game.

Me as well. IMO Zappe did nothing to show any growth. I'm intrigued by cunning and I would like to see him with extended time. He's someone who provides some excitement.

Again it’s not a Zappe thing. Every pocket QB would have looked terrible last night with our 3rd string OL including Brady.

Tarkenton was a Qb who could run, Douglas was a running QB
Tarkentons most rushes and yards were 62/376
Douglas was 141/968 in a season when he passed for 1246 yards on 198 pas attempts.
What I remember of Tarkenton was these really long scrambles where he does circles and goes back and forth, more buying time so he could throw than for running. Very entertaining. We were a Boston-based Giants household in the late 60s/early 70s but eventually switched, so I saw bunch of Tarkenton as a little kid throwin' bombs to the late great Homer Jones.
