Demario Douglas

I just can’t stop thinking how the Bildoes would love to have an electric slot receiver in their offense. Diggs is elite, Gabe Davis is a lesser Juju, rookie Dalton Kincaid is generating a lot of excitement, and their running game looks to improve.

DD would have been the missing piece for Josh Allen and Sean McDermott. Thank goodness Belichick drafted him.

On WEEI yesterday, Adam Jones was saying it's a bad sign if Douglas looks like the best WR on the team.

Which makes sense on one level, but on another level, is it really bad if Douglas looks like the best WR on the team, *because he's showing himself to be unguardable*? Isn't that a GOOD thing?

I can't quite recall what Edelman's ascension was like in here, but I feel like it's probably similar. He wasn't supposed to be their best player either, yet, over time, that's sort of what happened. Obviously, never a bad thing for a late-round guy to turn into one of their better players. We saw Meyers end up that way and again, while not ideal, still not a bad turn of events for an undrafted guy.

If he is your best receiver and he is mediocre it sucks. If he is your best receiver and he is freaking amazing it is a good thing. I hate stupid takes.

Agreed. Also people fail to note that Pop looks like the best receiver at the first two levels, mostly the first level.

There are very few guys in the NFL that can regularly separate outside and deep because it takes too long to run a complicated underneath route to shake a CB and then get upfield. So most WRs end up in over the shoulder situations, getting open by scheme, or in contested catch scenarios. CBs like Gonzo, who are 6+ feet tall and run 4.3s, are rarely, if ever, beat deep by 3+ yards.

GM/BB and Scouts really did their homework in the shrine on Douglas what Great value in the 6th Round.

To "make it" as a lower drafted/signed rookie in the Pats' offence historically still means a couple years on the bench no matter how good you look early.
I watched him a lot in Training Camp and he is the Patriots best receiver, by far. I would be shocked if he is not a day one starter. He reminds me of Welker, but quicker. He is impossible to cover, although I did not see Jack Jones line up against him--Jack Jones is the only Patriot that would have a chance.

Took Edelman until his second contract to be seen as a top option in the Patriots passing game, though. In his first four seasons he averaged 178 yards per year, he hung on due to his punt return skills more than anything.

They found a gem qb in the 6th round, so....

And it was late in the 6'th...the bonus picks (a compensatory selection). In retrospect, it was a huge gamble on the part of the Patriots; they could have easily lost him. Looking back with my 20/20 hindsight, he should have gone in round 4 or so (instead of Sidy Sow?). It is sort of shocking who the Patriots took ahead of Pop...but let's not blast the Patriots on this gamble; I predict that by mid season there will be 31 other teams kicking themselves for passing about 6 times on Douglas.

On the other hand, if the Patriots had indeed taken Douglas in Round 4, us draft nerds would have been screaming bloody murder, "Another reach by the Patriots for a tiny WR from an obscure college who couldn't even start in the Shrine game..."

Here are the guys taken ahead of Douglas by the Patriots:
Jake Andrews
Chad Ryland (K)
Sidy Sow
Atonio Mafi
Kayshon Boutte
Bryce Baringer (K)

Troy Brown was a coach in the Shrine Bowl practices. He must have been tearing his hair out as the Patriots draft unfolded. As I said before, from now on, Brown should be in charge of drafting WRs.

He did not know how to protect himself after a catch and got hammered trying to eek out a few extra yards.

So are we going to see a lot of Douglas in the preseason games or is BB going to do the Rope-A-Dope like Parcells did Dave Meggett? For all of you young pups, Parcells held out his super-quick, jitterbug slot receiver/return specialist Dave Meggett in the last game of the pre-season and sprung him on the Redskins in the season opener. Surprise!

With today's social media, and with joint practices becoming the norm I don't think that it's possible to surprise anyone anymore. He'll get plenty of snaps.

I want to see him vs someone else's CBs too. That'll be when the tasting of the pudding really begins.

To be fair, he did catch 37 passes his rookie season, plus a few more in the PO loss. He also proved to be quite adept at Defensive Back, being one of our better ones there during 2011. 2010 began the 3-year, 2-TE attack; plus Welker, Moss/Branch & the undeserving Brandon Tate were all ahead of him that year... Ochostinko polluted the roster and took snaps away in 2011, but at least Brandon Lloyd deserved them in 2012.

Double-D has no such obstacles in front of him, thus it would be of less surprise to see him contribute sooner than the Squirrel did.
