How I graded this years class. Home run as far as I'm concerned. You can't be mad at this pick at all. My CB1 and consensus CB1 so we got great value.

Potentially this really completes our secondary. We have two guys we can move around in Jack and Jon Jones. Water bug in Marcus who'll hopefully take over the slot and not look back. And now a alpha athlete with great size. Again mentioned above potential big man eraser but he's got matchup/move around to shadow and shutdown potential WR1.

Many speculated corner and he really could complete this secondary in a very specific way. This secondary has a bit of everything and legit lights out potential.

Round 1, 17th overall: CB Christian Gonzalez, Oregon
Analysis: What a win for the Patriots. Gonzalez was considered arguably the best cornerback in this year’s draft — if not, the second-best behind Devon Witherspoon — and New England was able to land him at No. 17 while also picking up an extra fourth-round pick in the process.

Gonzalez is an elite athlete, grabbed four interceptions with 11 passes defended last season, never missed a game due to injury in college and, at 6-foot-1, 197 bounds, will add some much-needed size and length to the Patriots’ shorter cornerback group. The only New England cornerback who topped 6 feet last season was Jalen Mills, and he reportedly is moving to safety. They needed a player with Gonzalez’s skill set.

A slam dunk off the top for Bill Belichick, who surely got a positive review of Gonzalez’s character from Adrian Klemm. The Patriots’ new O-line coach was an assistant at Oregon last season.

Gonzalez wound up being the third corner selected after Witherspoon and Mississippi State’s Emmanuel Forbes (No. 16 to Washington).

Christian Gonzalez, Oregon (6-foot-1, 197 pounds)

Gonzalez doesn't always play to his size. He's doesn't possess the feistiness that Witherspoon does. But he might be the best pound-for-pound athlete in the draft. Across positions.

He's incredibly smooth and fluid in his movements, showing zero difficulty in turning and running with vertical targets. And he's long enough to let some of those targets never get into their routes on time off the line of scrimmage.

He could be better at the catch point, but he had four picks and seven breakups last year. He still has room to grow even though he's already damn good. Scary.

More like 2021 and less like 2022(though that could still be a good draft). Keeping it simple here, this one was a no brainer. Position of need and incredible value at 17 for someone few thought would make it out the top 10.

Seems like he has all the things you can’t coach. And anything he might not have he can be coach. And who better to have coach him.

Strengths also play into scheme as you’ve mentioned
Pats are great at coaching up DBs. You look at Malcolm Butler and JC Jackson and Jonathon Jones, 3 undrafted CBs who became very good CBs. Now you take the top rated CB in the draft, who is more skilled than all 3 of those players, and first turns 21 in June. Man, this secondary has so much potential. Great speed with González, and Marcus Jones and Jonathan Jones. Add in Dugger who is really skilled. Mills may take McCourty’s place. Adrian Phillips and Jabrill Peppers. Really like this secondary. González just makes this secondary so much better.

I'm thrilled with this pick. Damn we got talent in the cb room with Gonzo and the 3 Joneses.
Now I need the Celtics to redeem themselves tonight.
Appreciate all the info, man
Done!

I think this is Belichick’s next Stephon Gilmore, I wanted an explosive player on offense, but the Patriots can coach up defensive backs as good or better than anyone in the league, so if they get the best out of him they have a true shutdown corner, Really good pick at 17.
