Honestly, not only will having a real OC help Mac and this team but also will having a real QB coach. We now know that within a few weeks of the season Judge was pulled because of how he was acting with the players.

Mac had no QB coach that season basically. It makes sense when you see how his form and fundamentals started to break down.

If Zappe was on Carolina's roster or Houston's, what would you all say? Nothing...because if you remove your binocular vision on this subject, Zappe is, at best, a CAREER back-up in this league. It remains to be seen if Mac also fits THAT description.

We will find out if he's more in camp so it's too soon to say. But the zappe mania crowd really has lost their mind over him over essentially one good game. QBs have had better stretches than zappe and fizzled out. We just stopped the zappe experiment as it was about to fizzle out in the bears game when he had 5 batted passes and 2 interceptions.

bill almost ruined 2 QBs in that game.

It's like half the fan base has never watched other NFL teams and seen backups/journeymen have good games. It's a sign he's Brady!

Look at minshew mania! Heineke dueling Tom Brady on the playoffs.

Zappe and accomplished something no Rookie QB had before and everyone saw the potential.

Enough with the cheap laughs. I'm in the mood for REAL humor.

I see what you did there.

Shhhhhh, don't worry, tons of these about Brady from '01

I am and will always be on Team Patriots. I want the Patriots to succeed no matter who is at QB. I defend Mac because he was set up to fail and Belichick wasted an entire year in our evaluation of Jones. We should know by now whether Jones has the potential to be the guy, but because of the disaster of last year we really don’t have a clue. in fact, you can say that about every young player on offense like Strange and Thornton.

Brady had a year under his belt, and his play snd that of the team around him was getting better throughout the season, so there was a basis to believe in them. I don’t think there is any comparison from that team to last year’s Patriotsvteam. There was no point last season where I felt like they were a playoff team, or getting better as the season wore on. That’s not a knock on Zappe, as he played well when he played, but while the defense played well at times the team as a whole never went on a run where I felt like they were putting it together, and were going to be a tough team to beat.

There will be a QB competition this year, and if Zappe has grasped the offense as well as Brady had in his 2nd season then Jones is going to have a battle on his hands, as I think that was the primary reason Belichick went back to Iones when he returned from injury.
Tom had like five snaps in '00 and watched a lot from the stands.

The team last year had a more than good enough, opportunistic defense, and ran the ball well.

I'm not happy about it, but I expect decline this year and another losing season.

I just don't get this. Honestly. Mac moves "up" when he has room to do so.

I am so damn sick of these faux "Zappe vs. Mac" arguments that lack reasonably solid bases for comparison. Zappe negotiating time in the pocket vs. the likes of Cleveland and Detroit is worlds different than Mac vs. New Jersey, Miami or Buffalo.

You can dispense with the sarcasm, it wasn't at all "hurtful." The only thing that disappoints me is your unwillingness to be objective about it from all angles of consideration. Your Zappe preference is transparent and unfortunately, Ian is not always right.

And don’t forget that Patricia actually called the game to give Zappe time which he didn’t give with Jones. With Zappe, they committed to the running game and picked their spots to throw. And they did a lot of play action with Zappe under center which they rarely did with Jones (most of Jones’ play action was in shotgun which is less effective). This made opposing defenses have to read run first on a lot of passing plays with Zappe which gave him an extra beat or two in the pocket on a lot of passing plays.

Except the second half vs. the Bears, when Matty abandoned the run because (gasp!) we were behind on the scoreboard.

You think if Belichick saw this potential and was so down on Jones that he wouldn’t have made Zappe the starter. He already went against the owner’s wishes by making Patricia the OC. He needed to justify the move. But you think he was too afraid to make a QB switch because Jones was a first round pick?

And what did the Bears do? They didn’t even try to rush Zappe. They just tried to clog the passing lanes and bat down balls. When they knew Zappe was passing all the time, they didn’t have to concern themselves with trying to stop the run and they could use his height to his disadvantage.

I'd like to say I believe OB will make a difference/improvement.

But I can't.

I think Jones will be much improved this year especially if they get him a true #1 WR. Who knows if he can be a franchise QB, but I expect him to be better than 2021.

Bill decides things and usually doesn't change his mind. He was invested in Mac. I think he sees now he was wrong. Manning was rare, a young QB who never spent any time on the bench.

Elway, Staubach, Montana, the list goes on forever. They all rode the bench for a while.

The team was highly effective with Zappe. Blathering about how the Lions & Browns stunk is nonsense, like saying Brady only won against crappy teams.

If Berry had put Eason back in there before Grogan broke his leg, '85 would have wound up just like last season.

You don’t think Jones could have done what Zappe did vs the Lions? Jones can hand off the ball just as good as Zappe and that is what Zappe did most of the game vs the Lions. Zappe only threw 21 times for 188 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT. Any starting QB could that. Yes, he completed 81% of his passes, that is because the Pats were very conservative in giving Zappe opportunities to throw and mostly ran the ball.

Meanwhile the Pats ran 35 times in that game. That was 1990s football. Run first and control the clock. And that form of football only works today if you can maintain a lead which is very hard in this pass happy NFL. You could never play this type of football vs Buffalo or KC or Cincy.

People seriously overrated Zappe did when he started.

I am ready to go to battle with Mac!

Happy Easter, everyone.

Pretend I'm saying this slowly:

Zappe wasn't overrated.

The only time we beat Buffalo we ran the ball.

Eason never could have won six straight as Grogan did - he'd have gone 2-4.

Individual statistics do not tell the comprehensive story.

It wasn't the weather in Buffalo - it was the strategy. Did you see how the Bengals won there?

You're 100% right about the league.

pass happy=stupid

I want Mac to succeed and I think he deserves another chance under competent coaching. Shame Belichick wasted a year when we could have learned what his potential really is by now.
