PFT: Bill "has shopped" Mac

I’m very curious to see how Zappe looks this training camp, with full offseason training and a full year in the NFL behind him. I thought he did well as a rookie given what he was assigned with. He didn’t play well once the Bears adjusted in the 2nd half and did leave some hanging passes. But there was a reason he was a 4th round pick and was the 3rd string QB here in year 1, not the 2nd stringer. Yeah, Brock Purdy’s emergence may seem to put a damper on this, but that’s the exception, not the rule, and his team was stacked with talented players and talented coaches unlike the Pats who had average offense players and terrible offensive coaches. But I thought Zappe’s decision making seemed pretty good too. He hung in there in his first ever NFL performance, completely unprepared, in Lambeau Field of all places. He didn’t fall all over himself - made the right decision most of the times, and didn’t crap his pants like Hoyer did in KC, for example.

We could have seen the best of him already and he is what he is, but I think there’s potential there if he really dedicated himself to knowing everything, and I mean everything, about the offense, and building up more arm strength.
I hate when people bring up the Bears game as an indictment on Zappe I will add he's the same size as Purdy and Hurtz who made it pretty far. I could say Mac 10 can't beat a good Team at full strength and have Zero come back wins when I last checked but he's the franchise.

For sure. Actually re: arm strength I thought he had some more zip than Mac and did a better job of throwing his guys open. He slides a lot better too.

Zappe is short for the position and has a lower than ideal release which resulted in a lot of clogged throwing lanes once teams got some tape on him. But Brees struggled with these issues as well for much of his early career. Adjusting to this flaw both in technique and scheme will ultimately be the determinant of his success as a pro. In my highly educated watching from the couch half drunk once a week opinion.

You cannot compare a short pocket passer to a short mobile QB. If Hurtz was a pure pocket passer, he would suck at being a QB.

Wasn’t there a movie Grumpy Old Men made in the early 1990s? Is it possible we’re seeing a version of it playing out?

You were singing the Zappe was exposed tune after the Bears game like a BB Defense have a chance against a mobile QB.

Like Drew Brees yeah I get it.

I have to say that if this report is true (which I am not buying) and Bill trades Jones away, he will be fired if one of two things happen next season - Jones becomes a top 10 QB or the Pats totally miss the playoffs with a losing record. The former can happen and Bill can save his job if he gets a QB who brings the Patriots to the playoffs and wins at least one, probably two playoff games.

One thing is for sure is that if he trades away Jones two seasons after drafting him with the 15th pick, he will definitely be one of the head coaches on the hottest of hot seats.

Mel Kiper has been singing Will Levis’ praises. The things he’s raving about are things that could appeal to Bill: toughness, playing through injuries, and attitude. His physical profile is also similar to Josh Allen’s.

I wonder if Bill is doing his due diligence to see what he can get for Mac in case Levis falls in the draft. The reason I say this is I can’t think of any other QB available that he might have an eye on.
Hendon Hooker

The overrated 6'6 Justin Herbert gets a lot of ball batted down with his low release but according to most he's so awesome.

More wishful thinking from the Belichick haters. He’s parted ways with many stars who had brief success elsewhere, but didn’t stand the test of time.

and what if Mac flames out elsewhere? Will that cement Belichick’s status as GOAT?

How Patriots' Lawyer Milloy Release Set Bill Belichick Precedent
I'm hardly a BB hater. Went to school with the guy. Certainly not wishing for such an outcome. But Bill is definitely gambling with his reputation if he does this. At best a wasted draft pick, at worst a colossal blunder.

The Bears showed that they could sit back and not rush Zappe and just clog the passing lanes and bat down balls. They will have to do something to stop that for him to even have a chance of ever seeing the field again in meaningful play.

What about a losing season with an electric rookie QB?
Does that buy him time?

Maybe, but what are the odds the Pats draft an electric rookie QB where this draft is supposedly devoid of QB talent beyond the first two picks?

Wow Mac won the job already? I missed the whole Offseason - Combine - Draft and Training camp.

What a frekin mess this team is, laughable joke.
If BB wants to trade Mac Jones, it's gonna happen whether you're a Mac backer or not.

We're just fans here. BB wears the GM cap.

My question is... will we even get a 2nd rounder back for Mac Jones? That's the price BB got when he shopped Jimmy Garappolo to the 49ers back in the day.
