Patriots Player Departure Meyers to LV Raiders

Well Bill has done it TWICE over the years with Welker and Edelman so it isn't a long shot that he can do it again.

BTW I think Jacobi was worth the money he got...to ANOTHER team. Now over the next 6 months Bill will have to find that 3rd guy. The onus IS on him to upgrade the position. My issue is that people seem to think they need to do it in the next 20 minutes.

Tom E. Curran's take is also an attempt at analyzing Bill's way of thinking:

The Patriots have often been reticent to pay big for undrafted or later-round talent when they hit free agency. JC Jackson. Trey Flowers. Malcolm Butler are examples.

Interesting thought, says I.

Juju, DJ Chark, Beckham. Marquez Callaway is only 24.
I Dont Care Whatever GIF
You've just named a bunch of guys who got less money and have been bouncing around from team to team. You don't wonder why teams don't want them?

Not talking about Beckham here since he wants 2x what Meyers got.

What if we did match the offer and Meyers just wanted out. Meyers said it was hard to turn down the Raiders with their offense and coaching.. that seems like a potentially sly dig at the pats

I see some of us are giving up on Thornton already.

You asked for names.

I don't think Meyers is "special". I think he's a fine player, but he should be replaceable with a multitude of the FAs out there. Everyone and his brother wants this team to become more dynamic, they want legit playmakers at WR1, and then we all lose our mind when they have a middle of the road guy, one who can't find the end zone with a GPS, leaves. I dunno man, maybe we should wait and see what they bring in. I like Meyers, but he is not a dynamic play maker. He's not Troy Brown, Jules or Welker, either. I would like him to stay, but he's out. Let's see what they do.

That's the team I was most afraid of where I figured if anyone would overpay - it would be them. This definitely sucks.

Yep, you called it a while back.

Don’t be surprised to see Davante Adams production go down because Jimmy would like to throw to the shorter route that is Meyers.

Yup, I’m gonna let someone else take Mr Adams early on in Fantasy this year.

Average Troy Brown season with the Patriots after he became a starter in 2000: 60 catches for 648 yards, 3 TDs. Average Jakobi Meyers season with the Patriots after he became a starter in 2020: 70 catches for 800 yards, 3 TDs. Meyers has also missed less games due to injury and their targets per 17 games rate are very similar (Troy Brown 107 targets/17, Meyers 114 targets/17).

That is too bad... $11M APY is a bite, but he has been the best producer at WR for 3 years. Oh welllll. Watching the wheels go round and round...

Wait. Wonder if this is part of bringing in a big name. Eh well, we'll see.

One thing that people may be missing is that maybe O'Brien feels like many of us felt after the 2021 season - Kendrick Bourne is the Patriots' best WR and should be starting even over Meyers. He never really had a shot last year because he was in Patricia's dog house before the preseason was over. Yes, he was inconsistent last year, but that could be in large part because he was played way inconsistently.

If O'Brien can turn Bourne back to the 2021 Bourne or better and the Pats get Jeudy or Hopkins, Meyers will not be missed.

Different game 20 years ago.

Difference is other than the QB we did have prime Gronk at the time. This team needs to help Mac as much as it can.

I agree that they need to upgrade the receiving units, I just think we need to wait and see what they do overall before passing judgement on it.

Don't forget Amendola (who people trashed for the first year he was here). He wasn't Edelman or Welker, but he was pretty damn good.

I agree that Bourne is a better receiver, he just hasn’t gotten the opportunity to show it. When they have gone to him he looks much more dynamic, but not as reliable. He’s a more explosive receiver, but he’s not as disciplined.
