Patriots Player Departure Meyers to LV Raiders

Can we not pretend this guy is the bastard child of Randy Moss and Jerry Rice? He's a nice player, and that's a fair contract, but he's not a true #1. Let's see how it plays out.
Not a single person in this thread has done that. Of course we will wait and see how it plays out, but we can only react to what we know in the moment. Hard to feel amazing about where the team is given the last few years and the strength of the division overall.

Here's another factor with Jakobi: he's tough. A lot of WRs are just afraid to over the middle. They really are. We see this week after week in the NFL on all tams. We have a couple supposed rugged guys who turtle over the middle. Thornton is not that guy either.

Good luck replacing the guy that not only gets open consistency, but shows TE tendencies in his willingness to take a hit.
And top 5 in contested catches across the league. Underrated . We are talking as if every receiver maintains 5 yards of separation. Contested catches are prolly 30% of typical receiver catches. Meyers excels in it and he is a big bodied receiver. Good luck getting similar production at 3-6 million.

Geez i was thinking $12m per would have been good for us to do, so this is quite a suprise . His value was severely overestimated looks like.

Thanks Jakobi. He's been my Beankie for 4 years, but it really was time to move on. Based on his comments on the coaching staff last year, I really didn't think he was coming back. Surprised the money wasn't higher, but at least it wasn't Breer's speculated 3yrs 22.5mil.

I was waaaayyy off on his market value. Thought 15 a year for him, aav... And I would have paid it too... But given the figures of his deal, it seems I also over estimated the demand for a player like Meyers... It really looks like this was a one horse race for his services...

Now what? Try and get one of the Denver receivers in a trade? Would be my best suggestion...

Also, call Bourne's agent and open negotiations on an extension... Try to bring some continuity to the wr room

I don't disagree, not one bit, but you can see where the thread is headed. I already posted that I would have thought they would have been all in on him at that number. Must have been mutual they didn't want him and he didn't want to be here.

People have to get used to the fact that #2s in this league are making $11m to $15m. #1s are well into the 20s.

When someone says he's not a #1, well he's not being paid like one.

We're judging WRs now by the standards of a decade ago.

The Raiders got a steal.

I’m a bit surprised by us not matching $11m a year tbh. However, if we has re-signed him wouldn’t we just be treading water and bringing the same offense back? Jeudy sort of replicates what Jacobi does, as does JSN in the draft - they both operate mostly on the inside but can play outside a bit too. If we had an Adams on the outside, then I think signing Meyers back makes more sense. But we don’t and there isn’t an easy route to acquire one. So upgrading this role seems easier to do.

Underrated. Not a burner or flashy
Lets see Bill get someone with similar production this year for < 11 million.

Definitelty sounds from Myers interview that Pats did not want him and he wanted to leave

He's not a true #1, at all. But he's a guy who at that price tag, paired with an impact guy, could have potentially been just as productive with another player who also might have put up a lot of production. Going to be interesting to see the type of year he has paired with Adams, as I'm guessing it'll be a good year for him. Just disappointing given the $$ and the fact they now need to replace him. I agree, we need to wait and see, but this one does certainly sting a bit.
Yep and my belief Josh will be dumping/trading Waller and that'll mean more touches for Meyers so his $21m in guarantees is justified.

Renfrow's contract seems like a bit of a tangle. I can see them keeping Refrow in 2023.

I didn't even really read the initial contract and figured it was high, but instead, the totals tell me he didn't want to come back.

I’m going to withhold judgement on this until we see what they are doing with their roster overall. The not real knock you can put on Meyers is that he’s not a scoring threat. I think Belichick believes he can replace a possession receiver at a lower cost, while creating more cap room for a bolder move, but you never know with Belichick. The only certainty is that the responsibility for this roster is 100% on Belichick. I know how I would like this to end, with Belichick trading for Hopkins, with this move accounting for half of his salary, but I also realize that is wishful thinking. It’s hard to see this off-season as me where they are going to be cautious, Between this and the Jonnu Smith move it seems like they have created about 20 million more in cap space, but that’s just a guess, Miguel would know for certain,

Or he got caught flat-footed in the negotiations and underestimated how much Jakobi didn't want to be in NE anymore.

I agree. I don’t know what they are doing, but my hope is that they are clearing the way to trade for Hopkins, and then go get a slot receiver from either free agency or the draft.

Lost in all this is that he still led the team in receiving last season despite missing two games and playing the majority of the year with a tear in his knee. People who act like it's no big deal sort of miss how good he actually was. Again, is he a #1? No. But if they could get someone competent and an upgrade from Agholor out there with him, imagine having two guys with 1000+ yards receiving. It's just too bad it didn't work out.

That could be as well, but I think it comes down to a hard line on how he valued jMeyers, and he wasn’t going to budge on it, which is typical Belichick.

But we're not using assets to replace resources that would've been available to us with no assets expended.

We're talking about using a 1st or 2nd rounder to replace what we should've locked down for free.

That weakens your team.

The only explanation for this is that they need playing time for a guy like Jeudy, and with Parker, Thornton and Bourne, there are too many bodies already. If you bring in Jeudy, that's 4 guys.

And the fact is Meyers was talked about as a leader by good chunk of players in the locker room. So losing a 4 year player and key offensive cornerstone for few million dollars doesn't seem intelligent to me. Only time will tell. Pats drafting capabilities as far as WR are concerned is legendary. And we have a very poor FA class.

Unlesss they are getting Jeudy or Hopkins for a 4th rounder and conditional 3rd next year .

I also wrote about this as well, but I think part of this started last offseason when they offered him a 2nd round tender instead of the first given the seasons he had just put together. It was a difference of about $1.5 million or so, and the fact he waited until June to sign it tells me he wasn't thrilled about it, but did the smart thing and never let it be a distraction and decided to let his work on the field set him up for the future. That and the fiasco that went on probably made him more inclined to move on.
