NFL GAME DAY DISCUSSION Super Bowl Game Day Pregame/Game Thread (Eagles vs Chiefs)

No doubt, I’ve never seen players as wide open as this KC offense. It seems like Reid can take an average wr group and scheme them open all day.
I'm happy for him, honestly. Glad it at least it happened where he didn't go through the Pats to get there. This now at least puts him at a higher tier over guys who maybe weren't as good over a sustained period of time the way he's been. He deserves it, and I do think that Mahomes is going to struggle to get back there if/when he retires. I think if Reid gets to three, he'll hang it up. But we also have to factor in Cincinnati and Buffalo, so it's going to be tough enough as it is, and I don't know if Mahomes can win another with him, let alone the next three without him.

Maybe he does - doesn't change the fact that all you have to do is look at Tampa Bay to realize that it may end up letting everyone know how much of an effect Reid had on the offense. It's funny, we can joke about him, but the guy is clearly a great coach. His years and Philly and obviously now certainly proves that.

He would be a huge loss imo. I wonder how many more years he can go, he’s 64 so may still have a few left but he’s also not the picture of health.

The thing that will nix this is the fact that Reid is a lot older than Belichick. Mahomes will never get to six because Reid will retire before he has a chance, not to mention the way he plays the game is going to catch up to him before that can happen as well.

you are wrongfully assuming (hoping) Mahomes won’t win with another coach.

It’s such a stupid argument in that spygate was more of a punishment against Bill than Tom. To add to this there was no drop off in performance since Spygate. Not counting 2008 due to the acl injury Brady and the pats managed to make it to at least the afc championship in 9 of 12 seasons. I can see why he didn’t bother mentioning deflategate since Brady went 3-1 in superbowls afterwards with no performance dip.

The whole team benefitted off of Bill’s operation. clearly Bill isn’t stupid enough to do something for 7 years that didn’t help them in any way. otherwise he’d be an idiot, which we know he’s not. he’s the greatest defensive mind in NFL history.

Just wanted to come back to say that after finally watching it, Chris Stapleton's National Anthem before kickoff might be one of the best I've heard before the SB (and maybe ever). Whitney's (even though it wasn't "live") was at the top for me, but the fact that Stapleton performed it live might put it over the top. Incredible. Goose bumps.

For reference, I've sung the anthem prerecorded at Fenway before a Sox game before as part of a small group. Can't imagine singing live in a stadium like that unless in ear monitors were spot on... and even then...

History has shown it's tough, and unlikely. He's not going to last in this game as long as it takes because of how he plays, he'll take a shot that will hamper him at some point. Not wishing that on him, but all you have to do is look around at athletic quarterbacks and the data backs that up.

So hey, if I'm wrong, you can gloat ... I guess?

You essentially just killed the argument. Brady had no idea what was going on and it isn't something he knowingly had anything to do with. At the same time, I don't want to get into something that happened 15 years ago and something that other teams in the league were doing, which is why all of that got buried because Belichick knew it and I'm pretty sure threatened Goodell with outing everybody. They very quickly "destroyed the tapes." That's because the league went to try and make a bigger example out of New England and Belichick crushed it, because he didn't invent the practice, and Goodell knew it. But the league had to save face because they blatantly ignored the fact they couldn't do it from the sideline anymore.

Again, let's end this discussion, because all it does is raise mine and everyone else's blood pressure. ;)

He was incredible. I like him anyway. Guy has a great voice and I agree with you - his rendition was one of the best I've ever heard.

it doesn’t matter. he and all 52 other players benefited as well as the coaching staff.

Goodell saved the Patriots by ending the investigation after 4 days. this easily could have been a 6 month long investigation like deflategate.

He did that for a reason - and I just explained it to you. Belichick had the dirt, and said as much - multiple times. Look up the transcript I did from the day he went scorched earth about it when a smart-alec reporter brought it up during deflate-gate.

And Mahomes will own all his records when all is said and done. The end.
Oh probably so. I mean he does get the benefit of a 17 game season for the rest of his career with 18 looming.

Here, I'll save you the trouble:

Reporter: Bill, you said you try to err on the caution with the rules, but the videotaping, you were pushing the envelope on that, did that change that?

Belichick: “Look, that’s a whole other discussion. The guy’s giving signals in front of 80,000 people, OK? So we filmed him making signals out in front of 80,000 people like there were a lot of other teams doing at that time too. Forget about that. If were wrong, then we’ve been disciplined for that.”

Reporter: That’s clearly not trying to do everything you can stay on the side of caution.

Belichick: “The guy is in front of 80,000 people. 80,000 people saw it. Everybody on the sideline saw it. Everybody sees our guy in front of 80,000 people. There he is. So, it was wrong and we were disciplined for it. That’s it. Again, we are never going to do it again and anything that’s close, we aren’t going to do it either.”

Reporter: I’m talking about what you said a few minutes ago about staying on the side of caution.

Belichick: “We always do, but I mean anything that’s even remotely close, we err on the side of caution.”

Here's the entire press conference from that day:

It’s a quantum leap to assume Belichick was blackmailing the league for lesser punishment with dirt on other teams…besides those teams didn’t have a genius like Ernie Adams overseeing the operation

It's not a quantum leap at all, especially given what he said, both when it happened in 2007 and then. If you honestly think Kraft would have just kept quiet and just taken it without saying something had it escalated, I can't help you with that. The tapes were quickly destroyed for a reason (Belichick knew who the other teams were doing it), not because Goodell is some merciful being.

Look, all I know is that the Pats were caught. I heard rumors of other teams like the Jets and Packers doing it but that's about it. The memo that was sent out by Ray Anderson in 2006 was supposedly the result of teams complaining about the Patriots. The competition committee also met regularly about the Pats videotaping apparently. I doubt all 32 teams were in violation, maybe just a handful including NE.

The Patriots were caught for doing it like a week after being told not to, which is what irked the league and the only reason the world found out about it is because Mangini leaked it.

As for the rest, you just essentially made my point. Other teams were doing it, and I'm sure Goodell buried it because he didn't want to go and have it turn into a bigger issue. He and Belichick talked, they agreed to bury it (the tapes were destroyed) and comply with the punishment and the rest - is history.

The memo came out in 2006. The Pats were busted in the first week of the 2007 season. Bill chose to ignore the memo.

Just speculation

Exactly - I think there was also another memo they received a week or so prior to that, if I recall correctly.
Just speculation
Or an educated guess based on Belichick's own comments.

Can we stop talking about this now? Because aside from minor details, you and I appear to finally more or less agree on this. Just do me a favor and don't bring up either of the Giants Super Bowls (especially the 2008 one), - please.

Maybe but a lot has to go right.
He's so far on the right trajectory
He's had injury scare in the past 3 seasons though so that backyard style of play may come back to haunt him.
What happens when Kelce slows down?
If the other teams in the division gets better? Chargers have a elite QB?(although the curse is real) and the Donkeys have a HC that can fix Russ
We shall see. He is the best QB right now by a wide margin though

1999 and 2000 Rams (prior to injuries) was pretty insane as well. 2019 Ravens had guys running wide open due to defenses fearing the read option with Jackson. KC coaching staff has done a great job with what they have. And floating under the radar in all this is Steve Spagnolo now has 3 Super Bowl rings as a DC.
