On the surface the Pats have IMHO these holes to fill as immediate needs OT, CB, WR, FS (assuming Dmac retires) A lot of the draft decisions will depend on what happens from the off season decisions that will be made before FA, then during the 6 or so weeks of FA, before the draft in late April. For example I think the decision on whether Trent Brown is kept at LT or goes back to RT (where I'd like him to be, next to Owenu) is the first big decision for Klemm. If he stays at LT, then the OT FA market gets a lot bigger and a guy like MacGlinchey becomes a real target. More potential RT's out there than left.
Also they have to decide on the OT's they have. Stuber will be coming back this summer ready to play, and they have liked him enough to wait this long for him. McDermont did better than anyone expected. Will they see enough potential improvement in him this off season for them to think he could be more than just a back up. Wynn is gone, Is Cajuste going too? All this will help determine what the Pats will do in the draft as far as OL help.
Historically they have had GREAT luck finding G's in the middle of the draft (3-5), but when they have decided they need an OT, they have historically gone after them higher (1-2) Another thing to consider is where the strength of the draft and FA are. I've seen people who believe the strongest and deepest areas of the draft will be RB, WR, FS, and Edge talent. And as usual, there will likely be at least 4 QB's taken in Rd 1.
IF and that's a big if, we can get the OL help we need in FA, then I would want my first 3 picks to be CB, DT, and WR in no particular order. If the CB's and DI's that I think are worth the #14 pick are gone, I'd likely look for a trade down and get another 2nd round pick (say down to 20-22) THEN I'd get the best CB and DT on the board and go from their. I believe there will be plenty of excellent WR prospects available all through the 2nd and 3rd rounds Having 3 picks in those 2 rounds will assure we get one.
Again at DT if we grab the Raven's FA DT (payne), then I'd be THRILLED with an interior group of Godcheax, Payne, Barmore, Guy and Ekule and forget about any early round DT's. Judon, Uche, Wise, and Jennings is a solid group to start with, but I'd like to add another pure edge guy as Uche is entering his contract year.
All that being said I'm going to try one of these Mocks. They look like so much fun
