All of these mentioned pre draft. Surprising to see how many are spot on with his performance this season.
Call it bad coaching or just his own maturity level, but lack of improvement in so many identified areas below does not speak well for his future. This report had him as a good backup or low end starter....unfortunately that is what we have seen this year.

Weaknesses
  • Very thin lower body and struggles to fight off rush contact.
  • Slow ball handler on RPOs.
  • Leaves back half behind in his follow-through.
  • Average release quickness.
  • Locks in on a target rather than honoring the progressions.
  • Doesn't play with the desired poise of an NFL starter.
  • Antsy when reads don't quickly come together.
  • Play can be panicky and rushed in the face of pressure.
  • Has trouble locating open targets in direction where heat is coming from.
  • Would like to see him play with more grit

Man…that is SPOT on for what we are seeing.

Which means…he has been coached up exactly ZERO
How do you coach grit?

You dont

If these things could be coached, no one would have QB problems

II still want Patricia gone, but blaming him for this part is weird. Do we blame the guy who coached Jeff George for the QBs 10 cent brain?

  • Strengths

  • Stepped up to the challenge in 2020.
  • Won't take unnecessary chances very often.
  • Feel for pocket slides to avoid pressure.
  • Can climb into a rhythmic drive throw.
  • Very confident making placement throws.
  • Feathery touch attacking over the top of linebackers.
  • Accuracy to prevent receivers from having to break stride.
  • Expedites release on hot reads and in the face of pressure.
  • Perfect placement with hanging it high for receiver to leap and make plays.
  • Shows flashes of throwing players open.
  • Wins at the back shoulder.
  • Willing to get rid of the ball rather than take a loss or make a mistake.
  • Some elusive qualities when he turns into a runner.

Now this sounds like a description of Peyton Manning, lol. Mac has a lot of great qualities, the accuracy is the best part of what you get. But in the NFL, in the most crucial games, you have to expect unrelenting pressure, so you need a QB who won’t crumble. Can you learn that? I guess I contradict my earlier post in the sense that Peyton learned it. But it took him 10 years.

As Tom Brady once said of his own less than stellar scouting report when quoted at him, ..."what the heck do they know, that sounds like Joe Montana right there".

I've been a Mac guy from the beginning. But what I'm seeing now is exactly what these reports says about lacking "the desired poise to be an NFL starter." I mean, we all love a QB who plays with fire (see Tom Brady). But Mac seems to lose control a bit more than he should. He doesn't harness it well. Some of it is age and inexperience; but seeing this in pre-draft analyses, you kind of wonder if it's fixable.

It's funny that nobody was mentioning his weaknesses last season when he made the pro bowl and led this injury depleted team to the playoffs.

Next year, when there is a new OC, we'll see his improvement. Mac is the least of our concerns on offense.

How do coach arm strength?

How do you coach Mac to be an anticipatory passer?

You cant because either a QB has it or he doesnt. Bledsoe was a reactionary passer and Jones is a reactionary passer. Just like Jones big pass play vs the Raiders to Meyers all alone.

How many times have you heard the announcer say that Mac had the ball enroute in the air before the receiver completed his route? Last night Baker Mayfield was burning in passes to his receivers with DBs 1 yard away which is basically an arms length.

I wonder what Bailey Zappe's negatives on his scouting report are....Just curious.
Per Bleacher report- ZAPPE

"
POSITIVES

— Very good accuracy. Can change arm angles to throw with touch.

— Shows a very good understanding of the concepts being run. Consistently operates on time and throws with anticipation. Has calm eyes and progresses.

— Very good accuracy on short and intermediate throws. Gets the ball out early and gives his receivers room to operate after the catch.

— Throws a very catchable deep ball. Gets it out early and throws with high loft.

— Tight and consistent footwork in the pocket. Stays balanced and ready to throw.

— Not an overwhelming athlete but a good thrower when on the move. Remains accurate out of structure.

— Very productive throughout his career.
t
NEGATIVES

— Below-average arm strength.

— Average height for the position.

I blame Patricia for Chicago and not coaching up Arm Strength and Height.

Fire him.

Jones worked with Manning before camp in 2021 and with Tom House this year. He had McDaniel as an OC last year and thrived. My one complaint about his off-season is that he didn’t seem to get stronger and leaner.

People can learn grit through adversity. The Patriots have given him plenty of adversity this year. He has had to endure an inexperienced OC, who installed a new dumbed down system, robbing Jones of one of his strengths.

He needs to cut the demonstrative antics, block out the noise, man up and just communicate with his teammates.

No one cried more than Peyton Manning and Dan Marino. So it’s probably not fixable but if you’re very good, teams will live with it

The scouting report here says he has excellent anticipation. That’s not the problem I see. The problem is that he blanks out half the field when pressured.
