OT: Felger and Murray Cutoff While Complaining About Layoffs at 98.5

I dunno. I’d stick to sports radio if it reverted to even 10 years ago’s style…

Dale & Holley aren't coming through that speaker anytime soon.

I will give credit where credit is due. I was there when Felger was a beat writer with the Herald, and the guy worked hard and certainly invested a lot of time on the radio in between to eventually get that opportunity as well as his television gig. He was also helpful to me on a few occasions and was always great from that standpoint.

While I don't like his schtick on air, knowing the backstory, I do have an appreciation for how he got to where he is.

He couldn't make a go of it as a legitimate host, so he decided that he'd just become a troll on the radio. And, because it's the Boston market, that succeeded. Congrats to him for finding a path to financial success, but he's done it at the expense of decent radio.

EEI in the afternoon may as well be the friggin' View...I really could not care less what Meghan Ottolini has to say about anything in her goofy goona world...Hatefilled Lou is pathological when it comes to the Pats and Fauria's narcissism is an oppressive ,recurring reality.

"Meg O" is terrible in just about every way, and Fauria's taken the buffoonery to a level that is so offputting that, because that show is up against Felger and Mazz, I'm now almost completely just listening to the afternoon sports talk when I know guests are on (or due to be on).

I'm with you, I'm just concerned that if it isn't Apple, it will be another service provider that requires a cable subscription to access the streaming package.

The hang-up currently apparently centers around the local blackout rules, which as you know means you can't watch it on that and instead have to watch whatever the local channel carrying the game is. Apple doesn't want to be tied to that rule, and the NFL is reportedly sticking with that because their deals with the networks all run through 2030 and that's what the local channels want to make sure remains.

So who knows...I'd prefer Apple ending up with it, but I'm not going to feel good about any of it until the deal is done.

Streaming prices are going to keep going up. Everyone who thought ditching the cord was a great idea will end up without any real savings, but with less reliable transmission.

So when are we getting an Ian and Ash podcast? :haha:

…and while I’m ranting : at times, instead of « going with what the call-ins are bringing to the table », they stick on one theme. It’s lazy. They sometimes seem like they have one idea and that’s all it’s going to be for 3-4 hours.

I ran into Jim Murray last year and I told him that I'm not a big fan of sports talk. When he asked me why I told him that they only cover local teams and don't give us enough sports news from around the country.

At one time I thought that Jermain Wiggins would be interesting on EEI but he became far too annoying with his blatantly racist takes and his butchering of the English language. He constantly interrupts the others too.

Wasn’t so long ago, the move was « dump cable, get Netflix ». Next thing you know, Netflix was one of X.

I agree, all of the streaming services together do NOT represent savings.

"Layoffs?!"

I doubt it will be a company that requires a cable subscription. The NFL knows that there is a huge opportunity to make money off of cord cutters. They are going to give it to a pure streaming service like Apple or Amazon or to a provider who will allow you to get it through their streaming service without cable like HBO Max.

And the product is far inferior.

Yep, can actually get X’s and O’s discussion and insight here, and not just irrational gossip girl takes and low depth “insight” like on 98.5 and EEI

I know whenever there is a non-sports related sports story that is really big that I need to avoid sports talk radio. Hell, even yesterday I turned on the radio and they were talking about how Belichick didn’t go to Kraft’s wedding. I didn’t listen to sports talk radio for two weeks when the Celtics suspended Udoka. It was predictable that the Udoka story was going to dominate the airwaves.

It is just so much easier for the hosts to discuss a coach getting suspended for an affair than breaking down offensive line play.

Radio is dying because there are far more listening options to divide listeners from podcasts to Spotify and Apple Music and Pandora. Streaming apps are killing broadcast television too. Both radio and TV are downsizing.
I opt not to listen to Boston Sports Radio. I actually watch some betting shows because they just talk about the numbers and don't fabricate stories. I don't bet, but I appreciate the insights.

I have Paramount, HBO Max, Discovery+ and Netflix during the off-season, with Paramount giving us a local channel for news. We don’t really watch a lot of TV from February through August. So like @Deus Irae said, cord-cutting works for those who don’t watch much television because even YouTube TV has gone way up, no real savings there anymore.

YouTube TV has been more reliable than Comcast/Xfinity at 1/3 the cost, and with more channels. Google is so vertically integrated, and has such a dominant market share, that they can put out a quality product like that without squeezing the consumer (yet).

WEEI bringing in Meghan Ottolini was a big mistake. Regardless of whether what she says has value, her voice is horrid via radio. I can't listen to it.

Your experience is your own, but internet goes down a lot more often than cable, in my experience.
