Did you hear Belichick? Now I am actually no kidding concern for Mac. BB said everything Zappe came to the slidelines and told him that he was seeing was exactly what he was also seeing....hmm....
BB being BB to motivate Mac. Translation "stop crying about RPO and listen to your coaches". If if it is too early to judge Mac after less than two years it is too early to declare Zappe the best after one game where he was not asked to do anything special. Great team victory, may the best QB earn the starting job.

I'm pretty CERTAIN it was, I was here during the draft.
Most mentalcases here wanted SOMEONE ELSE.
Zapp looks like at least a good backup, some peeps on here only want Studs, they don't get it, you need DEPTH!
I mean if I had the choice, I'd only want studs at QB

Lions last scored this much in first four in 1954. Bobby Lane is one of several greats who threw more career picks than TD's, but he was a monster.

He left the game as one of the last players to play without a face mask and was credited with creating the two-minute drill. Teammate Doak Walker said of him, "Layne never lost a game...time just ran out on him."
The Patriots Jess Richardson never wore a facemask, and out lasted him, playing thru '64 (62 was Layne's last season) ... and Jess was a defensive lineman to boot...

Guess we have to check this out, it's posted somewhere...but I remember we beat the Bears (Bruschi pick six) & Lions (Thanksgiving) on the road in reds
I was at the '94 game in Chicago ... I know we didnt wear the throwbacks for that game... and I looked thru the photo logs, and can't find a game where we played the bears in throwbacks...

EDIT Patsylicious nailed it - we played the Packers at home in All Whites in '94...

The reds/away game i was referring to earlier was the 1994 thanksgiving game in detroit...

I thought I accounted for all the throwback uniform games in the Uniform thread... Though, it was hardly an exhaustive search, so it is quite possible I missed a game or two

Because it's extremely relevant? Again I don't think you're reading my posts. Not comparing Zappe to Brady of today as a player, but comparing Zappe to Brady the QB who stepped in for Drew Bledsoe and managed to keep the team on the right path and play smart football. Obviously it's idiotic to say Zappe will go on to be who Brady became, but it's hard NOT to draw comparisons right now with Bledsoe/Brady and Jones/Zappe. Situations are just so similar, and the way Bledsoe/Jones played as starters getting hurt, and how Brady/Zappe played coming on in relief, are quite similar. Seems bizarre to deny those similarities. The question is whether Zappe holds up over further games, or even gets the chance.
There is one VERY big difference in the 2 qb situations, Ross.
Bledsoe was a vet who had reached his peak- he wasn't going to get any better- we knew exactly what we had with him.
Plus Brady was clearly the best Pats qb in preseason 2001 and everyone knew it,BB,teammates and fans.
Whereas Mac has only played 1 season and is nowhere close to his peak. It's way too early to know exactly what we have in Mac. Zappe has really played well and I look at it as,win/win for the Pats. The better he plays, the more it pushes Mac while also giving us a much better backup qb than before. But Mac will be the starter thru the 2023 season. You have to give him that long to really know if he can elevate this team or not. Unless he starts to play poorly for an extended stretch.

In 94 they wore the white ones against green bay

Playoff position not in the worst shape so far. Ravens and Bengals have to play one another later, one of them has to win. Assuming Chiefs beat the Raiders tomorrow, the only teams with a better record than NE currently are:

1. Bills 4-1
2. Chiefs 4-1 (assuming a win tomorrow)
3. Titans 3-2
4. Ravens 3-2 (assuming a win tonight)
5. Jets 3-2
6. Dolphins 3-2
7. Chargers 3-2
8. Colts 2-2-1

So still outside of a wild card spot, but not by a ton - in fact they're only 1 game behind the #3 seed. Several of the above teams play one another over the next few weeks as well, and the Pats play a few as well as some of their peers who are also 2-3 with them so they definitely have a pretty decent shot at getting back into a wild card spot if they keep playing well.
The key is to win some division games.

.

They shut down the best offense in football. Hats off to the defensive gameplan and defensive unit execution today. We're now 2-3. On to the Browns.
NO!

They shut down the highest scoring offense over the first 4 weeks of the season. It was a great performance by the Defense. But let's be clear. DET is a terrible team, and not the best offense om the NFL.

The start of this season comes down to two things.

1. Offensive management. If they had managed Mac the way they did Zapp it would have been a different story the first three games. They were way too aggressive early on.

2. Personnel. Now they play Bourne and Hunter Henry. They effed up big time sitting Bourne, forcing jonnu smith and lil Jordan. It doesn't take a genius to see these errors early in the season.

Bourne had one catch for one yard and had two procedural penalties. He was not the difference in the offense today, it was the OL playing their best game of the season and Meyers being back in the lineup. I agree on your first point though, they tried to really open things up for Mac in year two but they should have made sure all the fundamentals (with the whole offense, not just Mac) were solid first. Hopefully they can do that when he comes back and let him build some confidence back off of that.

@Actual Pats Fan

This is what I have for Throwbacks, 12 games, 9-3 record

  • 1994 vs Green Bay Packers, All-Whites, W 17-16 (Green Bay also wore throwback unis)
  • 1994 @ NY Jets, road whites, L 17-24
  • 2002 @ Detroit Lions, red tops, W 20-12
  • 2009 vs Tennessee Titans, W 59-0
  • 2009, vs Buffalo Bills, W 25-24
  • 2009 @ Miami Dolphins, red tops, L 21-22
  • 2009 @ Denver Broncos, road whites, L 17-20
  • 2010 vs Minnesota Vikings, W 28-18
  • 2010 vs Detroit Lions, W 45-24
  • 2011 vs New York Jets, W 30-21
  • 2012 vs New York Jets, W 29-26
  • 2022 vs Detroit Lions, W 29-0

The Jets will be tough, but the Pats D is getting good.

Gotta like BB going against Zach Wilson, even though Wilson appears to have improved this year. He seems to really handle the young QB's, especially Wilson himself in the first 2 meetings. Jets are no pushover this year but I still like that matchup for us

When you play from behind (Miami, Ravens) you have to open up the offense. You don't have much choice. If we fall behind to the Browns, you're going to see the same thing happen to Zappe. We'll open up the offense. We'll have to.

Even today, we were only up 6-0 after 20 minutes. If that were a better team, we could've been down 14-6.

And that Detroit offense was not at full strength, either.
