I thought he was washed-up 3 years ago... I still remember him in the process of converting from blocking TE to OT during the 2004 draft, and how he was one of those I wanted with the 7th-rounder that Bill & Scott threw away on Christian Morton...

Bill saving cap money for next year. Mac better be good this year or Jimmy G will be coming to town.
Jimmy G can't hold Mac's jock..

..it just wouldn't be right

Shaq doesn't look to be in very good shape in that photo, and that was what I noticed about his final couple years here in NE, too. He seemed to put on a lot of (bad) weight and didn't look to be moving as well as he used to. At the time he was traded I thought that element (physical shape/conditioning) was a big part of the decision, and I still think that way.

A caveat. The Patriots are the only team that have it in their contracts that they must get Player consent to do this restructure.

Really wish we could have kept him. He may struggle as a pass protector, but he is a road grader in the running game!

Was a big fan of his during his Pats tenure (another great pick by Bill ) but let’s see how many more years he ends up having as a top 10-15 OG. Like all teams, the Patriots do internal evaluations on all of their players at the end of each season. It is certainly possible that the way others outside of the Pats organization viewed him was different than how the Pats coaches and scouts graded his 2021 season.

Also, not to bring up painful subject but his pass blocking deficiencies cost them dearly in the Philly SB. If Brady has one more second time in the pocket on that game-determining drive, he probably is able to dump the ball off to Sweet Feet, who had running room for days.
