He can play in-line and block? All last year. Asiasi also is a great teammate, goes out of his way to join the QBs at their Spring throwing sessions, BB said Asiasi took a big jump this year, he is huge, very athletic, and fits with the team. I think you are barking up the wrong tree - it is his third year and he keeps improving. He is a fine TE backup and might start someday.

This is correct. A 20 reception year as a backup would be great. Then he can grow more in Y4.

Seriously, we need a #3 TE, and Asiasi is that player. Most here recognize that Asiasi had made a place for him self on the 53 man roster. But, sure, the team could acquire an upgrade, as they could for at least 40 of the 53.

Bill Belichick seems intrigued by Humphrey's skill set, referring to the nearly 6-foot-4, 210-pound receiver as a "big receiver, tight end-ish type of guy" last week.
Humphrey works mainly in the slot or from tighter splits that put him closer to the inside of the formation. During the two preseason games, 96.6 percent of his routes came in the slot, while most of his catches were on either seems or dig routes.

just because we have a competitor for 5th WR than is a TE type of guy, doesn't imply that he is replacing our #3 TE.

This is simply another skill that could help Humphrey make the squad. IMO, he'll make as a gunner or he will be eligible for the Practice Squad.

Humphrey makes sense as the 4th TE roster spot that many wanted for Keene. The spot is "available because we aren't carrying a fullback,

If this is your approach to reviewing past decisions, you'll be miserable about everything for the rest of your life. Not just football.
They've had two excellent draft and UDFA seasons in a row now. Looks like they've turned that problem around.

The draft has an 8% success rate across the board - that's how many draftees are playing up to their selections status 3 years in. 8%.

Look at how many 2nd and 3rd year players the Pats will have playing major roles next year - probably 12. That's how championship teams are built (and it takes time)...getting solid performance from very cheap players in multiple positions, allowing the cap to be spent to fill the gaps with FA signings and retained vets. Expecting a playoff team this year is fool's gold and simply an entitlement that comes from the past.

I read that cb Elam from Florida has looked really good in the preseason!

I really like Jack jones play a lot, and I think m jones was a steal, but I was shocked we passed on Elam and Dax hill in the first round.

Why draft a stud defensive back in the 1st who could potentially start for you when you can get guys like Slowjuan Williams in the 2nd round?

Fun Fact from above article: "In 38 career games (including playoffs), Williams has received two starts and has yet to register an interception. Over that stretch, he's tallied eight pass breakups and 50 combined tackles. Over the last two seasons, Williams allowed opposing quarterbacks to register a 129.4 and a 96.8 passer rating, respectfully."

Elam has looked good. I realize the team had a lot of holes to fill during the draft, and if Strange turns into a bonafide, long-term OG, it's hard to complain, but Elam is going to be a really good boundary CB in this league.

Fortunately they got two other studs in Jones x2, like you mentioned, who will both be very good players in their own right. Marcus doesn't have Elam's size, but he's certainly quicker and a better slot CB. Jack is the better comp to Elam; he's not quite as big/strong, but he has the length, instincts, and ball-skills to be a similarly good boundary CB (and Jack might have a bit more quickness, so perhaps he offers some slot versatility that Elam does not).

Can't feel too bad about not drafting Elam, though, because Jones x2 is a solid consolation prize, Strange appears to be a good one, and at the end of the day, there will always be ultra-talented players in the draft/FA who cannot be acquired due to limitations on number of draft selections, salary cap, roster size, etc.

I agree with everything you said!

The one thing that puzzles me is that the difference between cole “the” strange “pick” and any guard taken in the third round is minimal at best. I mean Thuney and mason stepped in and started from practically day 1.

At draft time we had a gaping hole on the outside at corner!
If we had Elam on the outside opposite mills and jon jones back in the slot, our secondary would be so much better now!
And we could still have jack and Marcus jones as key reserves.

For years we had the luxury of (arguably) the best OL coach of all time, who could make low drafted guys like wrestlers into a quality OL. Plus, we had the GOAT QB getting the ball out so quickly it made his OL look perhaps better than they were. That enabled the Pats to focus their drafting on defense, and we all know the results over the years. However, the success of that model was a real rarity. Almost all of the other great QBs had exceptional receivers and highly drafted quality offensive linemen over the years to reach their peaks. And, almost all teams that draft a potential franchise QB focus on nurturing the QB with a good OL and good receivers.

Now we have a second year QB (who has just lost his very talented offensive coordinator) who played his rookie year behind an OL who underperformed much of the year. I'm fine with them spending their first round pick this year on their top rated offensive lineman (Strange). Moreover, I think a good offensive tackle ought to be at the top of their draft list next year. There is nothing that can screw up a promising young QB like playing behind a bad offensive line (even a great talent like Andrew Luck can get ruined that way). Let's prioritize OL at least for Mac's first 2-3 years of development so he can learn good habits and develop confidence.
