Is the rebuild proceeding on track or are we looking at a very long process.
In my view the rebuild is successful when we can honestly say at the start of the season that the Patriots are one of the top 10 teams and a legitimate super bowl contender.

Clearly we are not there yet, In my view you need an elite QB to be a serious SB contender. I do not think MJ is an elite QB and not sure he will ever reach that status. Great guy, great attitude...but...I would rather have Kenny Pickett to be honest with you.

If by 5 years post Brady (2024-2025 season) we reach serious SB contender status again, the rebuild has been successful. If not, that might be the time for BB to retire.

2020: sign a terrible passer and get a higher draft pick for a QB - check
2021: draft Mac Jones and make it to the playoffs - check
2022: win 1-2 playoff games -

I'm ok with it so far. Some things better than others.

The fact that we have a good-to very good young QB is huge.

Past couple of drafts look pretty good as well.

How they use the assumingely abundance of 2023 cap space and draft next year will really tell us if the rebuild is close to/complete or not.

If this turns into a 1995 or 2002 that would really suck but all wouldn't be lost.

I think BB will retire by then either way. He'll be 73.

IMO, it is going as well as it could. Here's how I see things:

2020: We had no money and lost a lot of talent (even in 2019) from a team that played in 4 of the last 6 Superbowls.
2021: We got a QB and spend massively in free agency. We made the playoffs despite a late season swoon.
2022: We are in year 2 of the Jones era. I am expecting a leap from Jones this year. But we are also limited by the cap, but remaining fiscially responsible.
2023: We will be in Jones' 3rd year and have a lot of cap space (top 10 in the league, IIRC).

I am expecting playoffs this year and hoping for a playoff win at least.... next year, I think it is SB or bust, baby!

Nobody knows for sure what Mac's ceiling is. We'll find out more this year when his reins are loosened.

At least I don't think we will see any more 3 pass games. That game lost him the ROTY award on the spot IMO.

It all comes down to Mac. And so far, he looks like the same player which is a limited passer.

Yeah, it’s hard to judge the rebuild without knowing what steps Mac will or will not take, starting this season.

But in the spirit of this message board, I think it’s either going perfectly and the team has zero weaknesses at all, or it’s the worst rebuild of all time. Absolutely no in between whatsoever.

It certainly didn't help in terms of his stats. But him losing badly to Buffalo, Indy and MIA lost the #1 seed and ROTY.

So far so good. Made the playoffs with a rookie QB. Give it an other two to three seasons to see if BB is successful in turning things around.

2020 was going to be a lost year. Too many old players, no passing game, no money, no chance in hell.

2021 went as you'd expect with the influx of talent and a good rookie qb.

2022 to me is a wild card year. They can take a step back a la 2002, or they can scratch and claw their way a la 2001.

2023 and 2024 are the key years for me. Expecting at least an afccg appearance to signal their arrival as contenders.

BB is now going to be 70 this season.

Where he stands:

Belichick: 321-156-0 (including playoffs)
Shula: 347-173-6 (including playoffs)

He needs to go 26-17-6 in the next 49 games. With the 17 game schedule, he will coach 51 games in the next 3 seasons at minimum. I can see him winning 26/49 (53%) or 9 wins a year on average (the dude went 7-9 with Cam Newton!).

So, it will take 3 seasons at least...but if we have a great 2023...and finish with 12 wins...then make a SB run...(lose in the SB)...that is 14 wins right there...plus about 10 wins that I am expecting this year at minimum (we were 10-8 last year and I think we are better...notwithstanding the OL issues). That's 24 wins... but it can be done in 2 seasons if we win a playoff game this year...and win the SB next year...I'd like for Belichick to surpass Shula and rename his boat "IX Rings"...then ferry off into the Nantucket sunset!

Yeah. And the Pats won that game, proving in front of the country that they could get almost literally nothing from the QB and still win. That ended the race right there for a lot of voters I think. The Bengals are nothing without Chase.

BTW, can someone do me a solid? Direct me to the Patsfan.com 53 man roster picker website? I can't locate it.....

They could've very well lost that first game to Buffalo as they were driving for the game winner. The media would've murdered Bill had they lost.

Maybe this is not the quickest way and some of the younger guys can post a link.

Go to the thread with "53 man roster" and scroll back a couple of posts and you will see an attachment to the Pats Picker
