Deshaun Watson Suspended 11 games (Updated)

Isn't it great that the NFL appeals a ruling and then gets to pick who hears that appeal? I think Watson should have gotten a far tougher suspension, but the system certainly is rigged. Same thing happened to Brady in Deflategate.

They should've just agreed with what the judge ruled

The players let it happen.

They’re going to hit him with a harder punishment than the 12 game deal they offered. So it’s gonna be the entire season.

Yeah, but they had only so many hills they could die on in negotiations for the NFLPA. If they made everything they thought was unfair in the CBA an red line. we wouldn't have had a single down of football in the last decade or so.

Yeah, their union is wack. They should have fought that provision a long time ago.

In fairness, it was the older union during the Tagliabue and Rozelle eras that screwed over the players. The CBA was so one sided for decades that the current union can only reverse so many things. I am not a fan of current NFLPA, but they were really dealt a crappy hand because the NFLPA of the past would take almost anything the league gave them.

That's a very fair point. I hope they go after the commissionner's power at some point. The discipline system makes no sense.

It makes no sense when you hold it to the legal system. Most companies actually do reserve the right to hold an internal investigation of their employees and discipline however they see fit if they find them guilty. The only reason we have a judge involved is because a union is involved to begin with.

They've had multiple CBAs to fix this. Giving up on off-the-field discipline so that they could have something like fewer padded practices is how you end up here. It's the idiocy of the union that led to this, and I've been a Cassandra about this for more than a decade.

99% of the union does not care about this. There's 2423 players in the NFLPA. 2000 won't ever be in a serious situation like this where they are losing much more than a couple games and most of the players care more about things that will effect the 3-5 years they actually have in the league.

the NFLPA is too weak to make a charge up that hill.

CBA voting should be weighted by salary and years of service. Why would most of the players in this league concede a single $ for these types of issues? The owners would simply lock them out and most players would cave soon after. NFLPA should protect their superstars (yes even Watson) because they are the product but the CBA isn't a reflection of that. I don't know how they got these clauses in there to begin with and whoever let that happen is insane. The NFL NEVER gets it right.

I’m guessing, w/o inside knowledge, that the union employees have all kinds of grit and would love to push on certain issues.

I’ll bet you anything it’s the union membership, the players, that are WEAK. I mean. They rack up so many debts, buy toys, and they think it’ll last forever. Their careers are short and they have never ever been able to stomach « not playing / not getting paid ».

You can have all the symposiums and lectures about fall guys in the world. If your members are challenged, you aren’t winning any of these fights. The owners are despicable, but they are patient and they know they’ll always last longer than a bunch of rich athletes who don’t plan for the future.

There is a reason the NFL limits the debt a franchise can carry... as long as the tv money rolls in, they can cover the debt service... and as you say, a lot of players just spend spend spend... they cant play the long game like the owners

Down side to this appeal is Patriots probably end up facing Watson in week 6. Same thing happened with Zeke. He sued the NFL and ended up playing 8 games before accepting his suspension.

dont think Herr Goodell will put him on the exempt list while this plays out in court? and based on the ruling from the original arbiter, think watson can convince a federal judge to issue an injunction against the suspension?
