Deshaun Watson Suspended 11 games (Updated)

Not surprised. Goodell won't step in and add to the suspension. I believe the deal was to agree to whatever the "3rd party" judge would rule. Both the NFLPA and League Office.

Can the Pats stop Jacoby?

Browns might be 3-3 or even 4-2 after this suspension. They will be in a position for a playoff run once Watson comes back week 7.

If you are a Browns fan do you still root for the laundry?

Very fortunate for the Pats that we play then in week 6. I can't imagine Brissett having a big day against us. We'll see if he is even the starter by then. He runs a lot which leads to injury.

so intimidating ladies into a happy ending is 2 games "worse" that air naturally escaping a football....ok, got it

Watson sat all of last season. Shouldn't that count for something?

What was done to Tom Brady was criminal. Watson's suspension shouldn't be compared to that.

Ridley gambled on NFL games. What Watson did was outside the workplace. No comparison. Ridley was worse.

I'm not defending his actions, but come on. Watson didn't physically beat anyone. It wasn't criminal. Missing almost 1.5 years of his career is a steep penalty, not light.
The answer to your first question is a resounding NO!!!!!!!

Watson was FULLY paid last year for NOT providing any services to the Texans.

This penalty is a joke, the worst part is the fact he'll lose just about $300,000 in "salary" or less than 1% of his income this season.

Agree 100% the penalty is a joke. Last year he and his team agreed to pay him in full for doing NOTHING. He could have appealed but chose not to. Good evidence that he knows deep down that what he did was disrespectful to women. I really think he should have got a full season suspension this year. The guy is deranged and needs to grow up and learn to not use women as his personal pleasure object. Also he did not have the decency to at least express any remorse.
By the way F the Browns for giving him 250 million fully guaranteed. For as long as he and the idiot GM who handed him that contract, I hope the Browns finish in last place every year and do not make the playoffs.

So glad this POS is not on the patriots, because I could not root for that.

I mentioned earlier in the thread he will lose about 1/6th of 1% of the value of his new contract.

Do you think he preferred to give up a healthy year in his prime of a limited window career?
Yes, because he got paid in full, the time clock on his contact kept running, he didn't have to play on a bad Texans team which would most likely decrease his market value, and he had no risk of injury.

If the NFL said "it's ok to go" why wouldn't a team like Cleveland have made this offer last year?
We don't know what the NFL said to Cleveland.

It seems me that CLE was pretty intoxicated over the idea of getting him, and showed they would have no restraint when it came to getting him.

As we read during the league meetings, the rest of the owners were angry at CLE for giving out a fully guaranteed contract.

It seems plausible if not likely that CLE went rogue. They sure showed they were willing to break a precedent the other owners would not.

Thanks.... now THAT makes me even happier about this result. Seriously I was thinking that that $300K he is losing in less than 1% of the roughly $40MM he'll be collecting this year in his signing bonus.

lol, waiting on the Judge to order the Browns to hire...

What Florio wrote is worth keeping in mind:

But her factual findings, whatever they specifically were, caused her to impose a six-game suspension. In other words, she decided that he did enough to get suspended for more than a third of the season. Thus, there are sufficient facts on which the Commissioner can base a decision to suspend Watson longer than that, if the Commissioner so chooses.

The judge found him guilty. The only debate now is about the punishment, which is so subjective. The commissioner could simply say I agree with the decision of guilt but I feel the punishment should be harsher.

Yet, overall, I think the odds are only like 60/40 he does impose a longer suspension. There is much to be said for getting on with things. Yet if he does not extend the suspension, he will be setting a precedent that the commissioner does not overrule the arbiter's ruling. Basically he'd be ceding power to the arbiter, something I doubt he'll want to do. Yet the Rothlisberger case set a precedent that the penalty for egregious sexual misconduct is six games.

One reason that the Texans did not force the issue last year was the understanding that he would be suspended by the NFL if he was activated. It probably made sense to pay him to be as flexible as possible finding a trade. I know it won't happen, but it may make sense for Roger to recognize the skipped year as part of the suspension and impose a significant financial penalty to take away some of his salary. 1.5 years of suspension is pretty reasonable.

The NFLPA should revolt when Kraft and Jerry Jones got nothing.

The NFLPA agreed to the new CBA. They had the ability to hold out until the owners agreed to a dramatically different systems for adjudicating possible violations of the conduct policy. They signed a new CBA that kept all of the power in the hands of Goodell. That’s on them. They should revolt against their own Association for failing to protect them after seeing Brady get railroaded. I wouldn’t be surprised if Goodell tacked on another two games, to try to show the public that he is “serious about protecting women”.
This judge’s ruling has no real teeth.

The CBA doesn’t state that the players and owners will be held to the same standard, even if though they should be. Also, Kraft’s “victims” actively participated in a business transaction, exercising their own free will. What Watson allegedly did was very different.

The reality is that 1,600 players simply aren't going to make sacrifices to eliminate a rule that only comes into play once every year or so, no matter how unfair it may be.

In other words, the players care more about other things than how Goodell can make arbitrary decisions on discipline.

I'm sure lots of players say to themselves "that won't happen to me".

I'm sure others were happy that Brady and the Pats were taken down a peg, and didn't really care about the bull:poop: way it was done

Agree, and OTOH the Commissioner has shown he gets off on being in power so he wasn't going to give in on this very much if at all.

Im pretty certain you dont.

I think you are an excellent poster, so I don't want to get into a fight.

I think others are the guilty party. The Texans seem like bad people. I read somewhere they had set up most of the appointments. We know who their GM is. I'm not saying Watson is innocent, but I think this is defecting the core issue. That organization is toxic. Is it a coincidence this came out the moment Watson started squawking about leaving? Who knows? What Manning, Roth, and others did was much worse. I think Watson sat last year to do the right thing and let there be an investigation, which has found nothing criminal, rather than push the issue. Of course, that would mean he would be paid. I believe Watson was a pampered stupid kid who will grow up from this and positively give back to the Cleveland community, as well as women's groups. I think he is genuine in how he feels now, and is taking a hit because others didn't do their jobs (meaning they turned their backs or knew).

You guys keep suggesting that the # of games should be tied to something he did, and related to other similar punishments. SMH.

It'll be 5 games, for the obvious reason. And he'll be allowed to practice after 3 games.

FAIL

The NFL suspended Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay on Tuesday for six games and fined him $500,000 for violating the league's Personal Conduct Policy. Irsay pleaded guilty Tuesday to a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated following his arrest after a traffic stop in March.
