DRAFT Cole Strange-Welcome to the Pats

Ben was sacked 38 times last season. I believe that if you asked most fans that they would tell you that Ben took a beating out there and looked like a shell of his former self.

Mac Jones was sacked 29 times. Only 9 less than old Ben. He might have had a few more sacks if he threw the ball in Buffalo. Thats still too many hits on the QB.

Going OL in the first was the right call.

did someone see the logan hall vs cole strange at the senior bowl?
rep is starting at 0:16 here i think if that guy is cole strange number 69 and again at 0:39

A lot of reps where he's center is where he had some trouble, I think. That timing with the hands looks critical with an OL position switch ("wiping [one's] ass with the wrong hand"). Only had 1 career start at center in his career. I'm curious why he was there for the senior bowl.

If anyone wants to watch (and I can't believe I rewatched a quarter of this thing for an OL - originally watched it for 1 guy who did not make it to the Pats), here's the full Senior Bowl game (#69 center in Orange / white helmet). He did well imho except for 1 series where there were 2 bad center exchanges.

But they wouldn't have had to draft an OL guy in the 1st if they kept either of the G's they let go.

I am slowly warming up to him. Bill realizes it's a 2 year rebuild and is getting the core foundation on rookie money . If strange has the upside that we are not seeing then it makes the pick even better .

Since we have already drafted LBs in prior drafts , probably no one might get drafted now as probability of a 4th rounder being better than the ones we have is gonna be really low. So it's a question of real solid value picks now.

DI,RB and center could be the draft picks now.

I wouldn't be surprised if they package 6th and 7th picks with Harry and stidham to go up and draft some players with high upside.

Watched Matt Groh talk about Cole Strange and his mentioning that Strange played LT, LG and C. Something made me go look up Matt Light's info. It's eerily scary how similar the two of them are:
View attachment 42825

Strange is 1/8 in taller, but weighs 4 lbs less. Strange pressed the 225 five more times than Light.

Strange had better running numbers in the 10, 20, 40. They're Shuttle numbers are identical. And their 3 Cone, Strange is better.

I posited that BB might be thinking of Strange to replace Andrews. But what if he's the potential replacement for Wynn?
You could be right about the possible Wynn replacement.

We finally found common ground.

The other guy said that there were no receivers left after the first round who would start for our team.

I disagreed, because I think Meyers & Agholor are both replaceable

For the record…. I have been a Bourne believer & I think he is a great team player

I also don’t dislike STRANGE, I just would not have picked him at #29. If he wasn’t going to be there at #54, give up a 4th to move into the 40’s.

We had multiple 3rd & 4th round picks after moving back to #29.

We had the picks to move up in the second if we wanted.
Strange would have been gone at 33 to Tampa. Note that they took the next guard

I really don't see the point in worrying whether Strange would be there later or not. He ended up being the pick and nobody knows whether he'll be good or not. I'm sure we're all hoping he's great.

I'm happy with the pick but I'm still worried about our LBs, and as @Toofy pointed out it doesn't look like they'll get any of value. We'll see I suppose.

Could Wynn move to Guard?

From his stat sheet Strange has the strength, height, arm length for LT, but needs to add some weight IMO. I keep coming back to all these huge DE pass rushers. Wynn gave up approximately 33% of the 2021 sacks.

Alright I get it I'm sold on the Strange pick. :)
Hmmm, not me. Strange seems like another of BB's ham-fisted reaches, but luckily for us it appears that Matt and the other pros are now running the draft have done the other picks; I am pretty optimistic about Tyquan Thornton and Marcus Jones.

Of course none of us know; Strange could turn into the next Logan Mankins, but he did not get off to a good start at the Senior Bowl practices.

So it’s a compelling narrative. He just needs a big ass! We call it “sand in the pants.” And outrageously poor value where we picked him.

“We”. Lol.

This might be my favorite BB hate post ever. BB is responsible for the picks you don't like but Groh and Wolf the ones you like.

As I mentioned above, he had never played center until senior bowl week. He took reps there at the request of the teams/scouts. If you (not referring to you, Jim) criticize him for getting burned on a couple of reps against a borderline day 1 IDL, you are either being intentionally deceptive or you are ignorant about the details of the situation.

He more than held his own vs Logan Hall on the first rep in this video

So you’re telling me that Logan Hall’s highlight reel would include good plays against Cole Strange and none of the bad ones? Now I’ve seen everything…..

If you put together a highlight reel of Ty Law, you’d come away thinking that Peyton Manning was worse than Ryan Leaf.

When the scouts all say the player consistently held his own and proved he belonged over the entirety of the week, that’s a better barometer than two individual lowlights on a tape….

BS. Nothing remotely close was said about Richards.. This is revisionist on your part. Many people took a wait and see attitude. But you forget that.
I have that thread bookmarked. Shall we revisit it? Or, more likely, you’ll go silent.

Not only that you have to take into account he was playing out of position at center. BTW, I'm not saying that Logan Hall is bad. It's just that it's impressive for a guy from an FCS school to play well against one of the better DLs in the draft.

NFL.com – Cole Strange, C, Chattanooga
Scouts are giving Strange consistently positive reviews for his performance over the first two days of practice. He lined up at guard in college but moved to center this week. He's played substantially stronger at the point of attack than his leaner frame might indicate and has held up reasonably well against bull rushers when tested. After getting beat by power on one rep, he came back with a quick set, which allowed him to halt the bull rush before it could even get started. He's a rising, zone-scheme center with the talent to start in the NFL.

The Tennessean – Cole Strange, C, Chattanooga
Strange had a string of big wins in one-on-ones that hyped up his Senior Bowl teammates and coaches. The Knoxville native played left guard throughout his college career, a position that will be a major need if Rodger Saffold is a cap casualty.

Giants.com (previewing the week) – Cole Strange, G, Chattanooga
There are several offensive tackles from outside the Power Five conferences on the Senior Bowl roster, but Strange is the non-Power Five interior O-lineman to keep an eye on. He's already battled top-notch talent, aiding the Mocs' near-upset of Kentucky in September. Unlike last year's buzz-making Division III lineman, Quinn Meinerz, Strange is a taller, leaner guard prospect. He'll get leverage, though, against shorter defensive tackles and show off very good open-field mobility to earn projections as a future NFL starter.

Silent? No. Ignore your BS. Sure. You're like Deus in that respect.
