DRAFT Cole Strange-Welcome to the Pats

Jermain Johnson was there at 21, this is a total debacle.... I don't care about "draft capital" when there is an impact player there available and you pass on him to get several lesser talent guys later. That's just another bad draft day.
I wonder why Johnson slipped so much. If there are character concerns (remember that jumped ship at Georgia, but that it was a good move on his part), then I am happy he went to the Jets. If not, then it is a whiff by the Patriots, but at this point I don't think we can tell if the Patriots draft will be a disaster; it not off to a very impressive start.

I wouldn’t say that the left guards have been nobodies. They’ve had same darn good left guards. Mankins, Thuney, and Andruzzi were the consistent starters there for most of the last two decades. They’ve had a couple of years with guys filling in at the spot, like Connelly and Mason for a year each. But left guard has been stable.
I meant more that they were nobodies as far as what they invested to get them. Outside of Mankins none of those guys were high picks.

ELITE size/strength/speed profile. The guy is rocked up. Looks like he has no fat on him. Do you think his college team has a high-level nutrition and strength program? Of course not.

He is going to make huge strength improvements in the Patriots program and his frame 6’5” could easily carry 320 pounds.

If we took him in the 2nd round, I would be pissed, but o would probably be ok with it. We took him in the first ducking round. This is outrageous. Todays nfl is about speed in space. This pick is egregious.
It shows a lack of understanding of todays game
Disagree with that part. I think Bill detests the economics of the first round and isn't about to pay some 22 year old diva 100m x 4 years. I think he understands it just fine, and he's fekkin' stubborn. He's doing it his way. The rest of your post is correct.

It's obvious that BB picked him because he wears #69 and it'll bring some white balance back to the OL next to Andrews. HAHA!
But truthfully, on draft night everyone wants the sexy picks, but in the middle of the season EVERYONE talks about the OL being the backbone or scapegoat of the offense. So, cheer up everyone. We had no one at LG and he should start. I still think Onwenu is better on the right - G or T.

But these same stats were used to compare guys who were already in the NFL. For instance, Ryan Bates scored just as high as Strange, similar numbers, both top 5 in the last decade. Bates was a backup G for the Bills, who were bad at running and bad at pass protect. He also just signed for Ted Karras money.

So, he bypassed a top LB, Dean, or Lloyd or Walker. Maybe Hightower comes back. But, they need to get YOUNG and FASTER.....

BillB says he was "afraid" someone may be getting him. Really? Really? :poop:

This draft so far seems like it's still BillB as GM and deciding on who regardless of others on his team's choices. IMO.

ala, NKeal Harry...:poop:

Here's Brugler's scouting report for anyone who's interested...

The Beast - 2022 NFL Draft Guide - The Athletic

4. COLE STRANGE | Chattanooga 6047 | 307 lbs. | rSR. Knoxville, Tenn. (Farragut) 7/31/1998 (age 23.74) #69
BACKGROUND: Devin Cole Strange, who is the middle child of three, grew up in the Knoxville area and attended Farragut High School. He was a four-year letterman and played linebacker as a freshman and sophomore. As a junior captain, Strange led the team with 100 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss at middle linebacker to earn All-District honors. He moved to defensive end as a senior and was named the 2015 Conference Defensive Player of the Year with 103 tackles, 18.0 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and five passes defended. Strange, who also played tight end as a senior, earned All-State honors and led Farragut to a 10-2 record in 2015.

A two-star recruit out of high school, Strange was the No. 193 weakside defensive end in the 2016 recruiting class and the No. 94 recruit in the state of Tennessee. He was recruited by several FCS programs such as East Tennessee and Western Carolina and verbally committed to Chattanooga the summer before his senior season. Air Force entered the picture, and Strange flipped his commitment on signing day for the chance to play at the FBS level. However, during the summer after high school graduation, he had a change of heart and realized he wanted to be closer to his family and transferred to Chattanooga. Strange also made a position change and transitioned to the offensive line, initially at tackle before moving to left guard as a freshman because of team need. He took advantage of the extra year of NCAA eligibility from the pandemic and returned for his sixth season in 2021. Strange graduated with his degree in psychology (December 2020) and is pursuing his master’s degree in engineering management. He accepted his invitation to the 2022 Senior Bowl (eighth player in school history to receive an invite).

PRO DAY 6051 305 32 3/4 10 80 7/8 - - - - - - - - (position drills only)
STRENGTHS: Excellent quickness and pad level from snap to set-up ... flexible lower body and does an excellent job repositioning his feet at contact to stand up defenders ... has adequate length and active hands with a flexible coil ... his punch placement is sharp and consistent ... at his most confident in the run game ... naturally aggressive in everything he does on the football field ... embraces his rugged, mean blocking demeanor and prides himself on his quest to finish every play ... has zero bad weight on his frame ... his intelligence is clear on and off the field (3.71 GPA in college and was named Academic All-Conference all six years) ... named a senior captain with outstanding football character — football matters to him ... collected 44 total starts in three positions in college.

WEAKNESSES: Has a lean-muscled frame and lacks ideal mass or thickness for the trenches ... reliant on his fundamentals and can get bullied or jostled when his technique gets off schedule ... is a challenge for him to anchor (or re-anchor) vs. power ... his reset quickness lags a bit because of his tendency to lean into blocks ... feet can get overexcited at times in his pass sets, and he must develop more disciplined footwork ... can do a better job establishing and trusting his body angles ...

You don't negotiate with rookies. Their salaries are slotted. You own these guys at a low rate for 4 years.

We were clamoring for defensive player, a lineman for example. What do you think the #25 player is going to make relative to an OL at at #29? It's not that much of a difference. Strange isn't going to agree to less because Mel Kiper had him as 3rd rounder.

...Lacking top end talent on the defensive side of the ball will on the other end.
Hey as it stands now, the defense cannot stop the run, and it cannot stop the pass. Other than that, the defense is great.

Tonight is the make-or-break day for the Patriots' future. I hope Bill got the Reach Bug out of his system.

Honestly, if Belichick traded Strange this morning for David Ojabo and 5th, I would do cartwheels.

The kid could be the next Logan Mankins and it was still a bad pick beause you could have taken him at 54 or even 85 and drafted Walker or McDuffie.

People really gotta stop using draftnik boards as if teams just use those and don't have their own. You have no clue if he would have been there at 54 or 85. Most of all of those same draftnik boards that have Strange as a Day 2 pick had Green & Johnson going in the mid-to-late 20s, yet they went in the teens. Some even had them going in the 2nd. So right there it shows you the board was different for teams and draftniks on G.

If you do a look around most of these draftnik sites the pure G, (not college OTs that project as G in the NFL) the rankings layout like this for G

Green
Johnson
Parham
Strange

So if the Pats top priority was getting a G then their choices were Parham or Strange (Parham vs Strange is another discussion). That's a risky decision to pass on a G you really like because some dude on his laptop thought he'd be there 30-60 picks later.

This thread has great entertainment value ... some are flogging themselves ... gnashing of teeth ... deep wounds ... heads popping off ... all those hours analyzing possible pick ... Belichick of Thrones ... great stuff.

I understand it. I meant it to say later on after the rookie deal. I don't think he wants to invest in these guys for 4 years only to have them demand money Bill won't pay later on and he has to start over. A guard is never going to get the money that WR, CB, or edge players get.

I just HOPE HOPE in the 2nd round, they trade up from 3rd, and have 2 2nd-picks so they pick,

(WR) (LB)
Metchie III and Dean/Harris

Personally, I think the PLAYER sounds fantastic and something we needed. I think the problem is, as many have stated, that he could have been drafted lower... so why waste #29 on him... Why not wait till 2nd round and trade up for him ?

But, if he is a day 1 starter and a started at interior of line for years to come - that is exactly what the draft is for so I don't see any problem whatsoever. IF he turns into a Logan Mankins type at interior of line.... sign me up.

I didn't bother to watch but I did hear some stuff about a string of WRs being drafted right after the Pats moved down.

I agree that we need to be more patient. Imagine if you're the player and you started to read this thread to get a feel for what the fans are thinking. It's shameful.
There were six (I think) WRs off the board before 21.

And yeah, see my first post in this thread. The guy is a Pat, excited to be a Pat, and has all the tools to be really good. Crapping on him is absurd.
