2022 PTP Draft Board / Pats Draft Talk

PICKS THAT MAKE SENSE - OL THOUGHTS

A lot is discussed about “need“ and BPA and “value“ picks. Positional value. Personal binkies as well of course.
What about some perspective on what makes sense in regard to the existing roster? Id guess its at least part of the puzzle maybe significant.

Lets look at OL that i took the time to watch extensively (some 80 players +).

OL is a need. I guess nobody disputes that.

It was also one of the 4 positions reportedly scouted (meets, visits, workouts) heavily at the top (along w WR, LB, CB) which usually provides some indicator. At least 5 players projected to go Day 1&2 met, visited or worked out with NE (Penning, Raimann, Smith, Paul, Green).
We can safely add Zion Johnson as clear target with no need of visit being a “clean“ prospect from the area. Some others as well.

All have either tape or traits to play both guard and tackle, some of them all 5.

Looking at the roster there is an opening for a starter with no clear guy who could step up. Also not much left in FA.
On the other hand there is quite a lot of depth in terms of solid backups, PS/scout team players.
So the pick that would make most sense at this position (guard/tackle) is a possible/probable starter year 1.
That of course is a high ask with Pats draft capital.

I have maybe 5 players that one can have legit hope to start year 1 at either G or T & possibly be available at 21 and gone by 85.
That would mean one of the first two picks (even with possible trade down) would be needed to address this.

Many people are mocking Rd 3-5 guys forgetting that Pats roster is already full of similar prospects that have a hard time stepping up as starters. So drafting a prospect like f.e. Tom makes no sense to me this yr with guys like Herron, Cajuste, Hambright etc already on.

Id argue Pats should go for the best or at least reasonable chance to get legit G/T starter in this Draft.
The aforementioned “visit tracker“ suggests thats what they likely have in mind. (note that the only other OL reported contact is possible bup center Jurgens - a day 3 guy - which is also a “need“).

So
Penning might be gone by 21 and there are some question marks besides legit upsides so trading up might be too steep here. But if he falls..
Raimann is a Day 2 guy often mocked to Pats in round one. The “value“ would not be there but he does fit and despite being new to the position he could actually step up to a decent starter in Sep. By all indications he would be long gone before pick #54.
Zion - much was said already. I may be a bit lower on him but would not mind terribly if he is the 1st round pick. Of course value would not be there at #21 and getting him after trade down would be nicer but might not be the reality.
Green - one of my favourite guys for NE in this Draft. Would love the pick even at #21 despite “value“ not quite there (like most of this Draft). Have no doubt he could be impactful at LG Day 1.
Parham - not much talked about here but should be legit target for NE. For me basically in the same tier as the two before but more of IOL mold although he has also some decent tape at RT. He might be available a bit later but might also require a trade up in the second. And that would still be a very good value in this Draft.

There are a few guys who could maybe develop quickly enough to offer starting at least at G - but i would not bet on it:
Hayes - yep, there's a chance . not too far from above 3
Strange - not too far away either - all 5 positions - needs to bulk & anchor up for legit G
Salyer - prime backup at all 5 positions but is he a good enough starter?
Tulsa Twins - Smith & Paul - both reported contacts w NE. Quite raw with decent upside but probably not ready to start by Sep
Faalele - even more work to do . but stranger things have happened - but at least the huge upside might be worth the risk
(Tom - Herron with upside but also limitations)
Trading Shaq Mason for a 5th rounder was a real head scratcher. Given our serious need in the secondary having a gaping hole in our roster at IOL is troubling. We really need to land two starter quality players at CB and IOL just to get back to being mediocre roster-wise. Not to mention our lack of speed at LB and unproven talent at that position and at edge and our need for a stud two gapper IDL.

In trading Mason, I assume BB is comfortable with the IOL in this draft. I have to think that any of the potential first round guys like Zion, Green, Raimann etc could easily project as a starter at LG but taking one of them high in the draft will jeopardize us getting top notch talent in the secondary. I'm hoping that he's confident that some day two guys like Rhyan, Sayler, Ingram etc could also easily fill that position.

so much projection based on his athleticism and not actual production and pass rush move repertoire , if this doesn't turn out Baalke is fired

I mean, it's a tough one for the Jags because there is no player that really stands out as a first overall pick. But even allowing for that, Travon Walker is not even amongst the top 3 defensive prospects on his own team, in my opinion

Mason was a salary dump, so I can see why Belichick would trade him. Also, he didn’t have his best game vs Buffalo in the playoffs. It’s possible Belichick noticed a drop off.

agree, i would take Hutch and KT if i am the jags and lions. Those are the best players imo.

I thought Baalke wanted Hutchinson and that Khan wanted Walker?

I don’t know why so many mock drafts have us moving to grab a corner when that is the one position BB and staff always coaches up to maximum performance.
There are alot of 6 plus ft 4.3 athletes at DB in every round of this draft.
What there are not are 260 to 300 pound DLs who can run.
That is the first thing I am looking at in this draft.
Also protecting our Franchise QB Mac Jones.
There are maybe 3 possible number 1 WRS in this draft let talking true number 1s against NFL competition.
We can talk about linebacker, if there is a Patrick Willis or Derrick Brooks in this draft then yes take a LB in the first by all means.
Unless the corner is the next Law or Revis I don’t want to trade up for a a corner when I can trade a mid round pick for James Bradberry who has proven his worth against nfl caliber competiton.
I think we are making a mistake to trade up for a defensive back.
But what do I know.

The Shaq Mason move was the biggest off-season surprise to me. The Pats carry a $3.150M dead money cap hit this year, and his deal called for just over $10.5M if he stayed. They freed up $7.4M in cap space to go out and sign OT Trent Brown, WR Davante Parker, DB Jabrill Peppers and Malcolm Butler, so I get it.

But the Patriots were top 5 in the percentage of passing downs that the opponent blitzed (not unusual for a rookie QB.) The OL is essential to Mack Jones taking the next step in his development. I'm looking for the 21st pick in the first round to be a swing tackle.

I'm fine if the DB is not from Florida who's players seem to stink here.

Saw an interview with him last night on nfl network. He came off as such a smug, ****y dude that will start finger pointing when **** goes bad for him. It was an odd interview where Bucky and this other guy interviewing him gave him a chance to explain why production didn’t match his football knowledge (like Brady, he claimed to have the answers to the test) and athletic traits. Instead of using it as an opportunity to be humble, or talk about what he needed to work on, he said refer to the tape. Opponents schemed against him etc. Seemed like a very smart guy, but man…idk. Very Cam/Von ish.

Why does what school he is from matter? Different coaches, different recruiters, different systems down there. By your line of thinking, the Pats should just keep drafting from Michigan for the rest of eternity.

I hope the Pats come out of the draft with at least one edge rusher. When Judon wasn't able to create pressure to end the season it made it clear that New England needs to improve their pass rush. Right now they are counting on Wise, Perkins, and Uche which isn't going to get it done. I know they are rumored to be interested in Trey Flowers but I'd they still need a long term answer that can pile up sacks.

If it’s a DB I say Hill or Booth with a trade down.
Good Choices Cousin,
I am stubborn. I see the Panthers at #6 making a pitch for one of the three QB's that should be late round 1sts. With a draft of them have one pick #6 in the first and their next pick in the 4th at #137. That's just nuts!!!! I understand that the 2023 Draft is going to have a better class of QBs. Whomever is the Panthers QB that they Draft, he sits for a year unless Darnold falls deeper into the abyss.

They have two ways out of this.Trade for Baker with the 4th they have. Make Cleveland pay the salary guarantee. Drop to mid teens in round one(I have heard Teams do not want to trade up thsi year because the best picks are mid teens to perhaps early 5th round. I am not really a Baker fanboy but he's better IMO than the following staring QBs:
Darnold
Daniel Jones
Drew Locke
Tua
Hurts
Wentz
Mills is rising but I will throw him in. It has been said if he waited a year he could have been the #1 QB in this class.
The Bad Jameis (not the good)
Last year's Tannehill
Zack Wilson(ROOKIE)
Baker played most of the year hurt so the numbers related it.
But this is a post for another day

So trade for Baker
Or sell last years first rounder CB Jaycee Horn who was lost at game 3 last year to a broken foot, for first round pick #21 and perhaps a player like WR Harry or CB JoJuan Williams who the Panthers will anoint as a Safety.

All those with scowls on their faces, tell me why not? The Pats are trading for potential of an injured player they do good with (Gronk) and will try to get perhaps the 3rd or 4th or 5th best CB in this Draft. Dog poop I say!............... at pick #21.

Some of the latest mock drafts have Karlaftis falling to the Pats. Seems like a player the Pats might like, I did not check @BaconGrundleCandy rating.
