Player Signing Pats bringing back Bentley

Kind of a stretch.
Bentley isn't awful and in the right role I would be happy he is back but he isn't the type of LB the league is trending towards. We need speed at LB. Running backs and TEs were routinely turning swing passes and check downs over the middle into 10+ gains because of LBs couldn't get there quick enough.

Have to see the money first, but this is the kind of FA move we're typically used to (outside of last year). They see spots on the roster that don't currently have a "starter", sign an NFL player that can fill it and provide a floor, which gives them draft flexibility. Not only allows them to broaden their draft "needs", but also takes pressure off any rookie they do draft at the position. A great pick can beat out Bentley, but a project who's not ready doesn't get thrust into the starting role without having earned it.

Hope it's under $5Mill he ain't big time.

I'm largely agnostic on Bentley and agree that they need speed on all levels. Admittedly, I am curious to see how he plays with a DL that can control the LOS in the run game and flanked by LBs who aren't old/slow/on the decline (HT/KVN/JC). Plus he's got a great name.

I know he is not the most popular player on the team but I looked back all the game books and he was the top tackler over at least half the games and prominent in some of the others. But, as I am sure other posters will say , tackles are not everything and he has been exposed several times by a lack of speed when covering. ? He could be the only starting LB left from 2021

I would think our defense would look like this currently...expect more changes before the season starts:

EDGE: Matt Judon
NT: Davon Godchaux
DT: Christian Barmore
EDGE: J. Uche / D. Wise
LB: Raekwon McMillan
LB: J Bentley
CB: Jalen Mills
CB: T. Mitchell / J. Williams
Slot: J. Jones
S: Kyle Dugger
S: Devin McCourty
S: A. Phillips

So looks like we are all in on big slow LBs for 2022.

Apparently you've never watched film of Cameron McGrone and Raekwon McMillan and Mack Wilson have better 40 times than Devin Lloyd
