DRAFT 2022 PTP Draft Board / Pats Draft Talk

Folks, don’t worry about these top 20- or even top 30-caliber prospects; the Pats absolutely MUST trade down Multiple times in order to acquire Multiple extra picks, including an extra day 2 pick and At Least another TWO day 3 picks; and the first 5 picks MUST then be used EXCLUSIVELY on CB, DE, NT, LT & WR… Thinking that #21 should actually be used on just one player is flat-out Stupid Period.

This Is The Way.
I hear you Captain but this is the way ...
I think this is spot-on however, there are a few players (Stingley, Walker, Davis, Gardner) I'd make an exception for if they miraculously slipped to 21. If that was the case I wouldn't object to using some capital from '23 to get back into the 2nd.
Jermaine Johnson, Walker, Davis etc

It's a small group but if you can get legit 1st RD value at 21, why not??

This team could use a blue chip player on either side. Defense heavy draft so again why not add to the pieces we have.

If Mac is truly the guy he'll make this group work. You put a top ten QB with this group and Josh or a even just a competent OC and they're passing for 3/1 TD/INT. I want to add there but we could come away with a new look on defense if we wanted with the same old style.

Nice nugget from PFF, Diante Lee is one of like 4 people worth reading over there but he's very smart.
Jordan Davis has been mocked and discussed as an instant fix to their defensive line issues, and his tape gives an obvious explanation as to why. Not only did the 340-pound nose tackle run a sub-4.8-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, but he also put up an 83.5 run-defense grade as a zero-technique in 2021 — never being graded negatively for how he took on blocks or fit the run. Around 14% of Davis' run snaps as a true nose ended with him making a tackle for loss, speaking to his explosiveness and finishing ability. There will be plenty of discussion about positional value this spring, but in a defensive world with more two-high safeties and odd fronts, Davis is the prototypical nose to use in light boxes and to beat up on centers.

As for Channing Tindall, I’ve sung his praises when mocking up potential picks for Ed Donatell in Minnesota, as well. Tindall’s physicality and explosiveness make him an ideal linebacker to scrape over the top and track a ball-carrier before he gets to the point of attack. Because of his speed and the time he spent as a blitzer in Kirby Smart’s scheme last season, he can also add value as a potential pass-rusher in any exotic front built to feature Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack. Across Tindall’s 44 pass-rushing snaps as a blitzer, he put up a 23% pressure rate and a 25% pass-rush win rate, using his 4.4 speed to crush pockets and track quarterbacks.

I'll add a little with another UG boy, Nakobi Dean. Who isn't Patriot prototype in terms of size but checks every other box. He's a very smart kid who has had a 4.0 since HS throughout college majoring in mechanical engineering. He's been donating his time to different projects, getting involved in the community since HS.
Going back to his play on the field. He handles contact better than Lloyd. Neither are killers in that department but Dean is better using his hands to shed or get out of a fight along the los. Whereas Lloyd will slip, slide and avoid it. Which he does very well, just different types.

Kyle Phillips has garnered some attention here recently and has been sort of a binky in draft circles for a while now bc of toughness and underdog status. He's like a 190 soaking wet and UCLA's lead blocker off motion, out the backfield and detached off the los. Just like you'd see Woods or Kupp do for the Rams. He's definitely going to be a binky / draft crush by many. I know @DaBruinz loves him. He reminds me of Renfrow, maybe Amendola-lite. Not the most gifted or athletic but super quick feet and willing to do anything to make / help the team. He's just one of those guys that's very adapt at getting open. Can get off press with quick feet mostly stutters off the line but has a decent speed release and others. Good at the top of the route. Solid head, shoulder and body fakes at the top. Really clean, crafty footwork and fakes. Very good at using the space around him, knowing the situation, down & distance - what the defense is planning on. Late hands, strong hands - he'll grab the ball at the last second. Plus return man. I think he'll be playing for someone he's just that gym rat, underdog every team needs a few of those types. Certainly would push or be an upgrade over Gunna imo. I love the kid but if he can't get contribute on offense we need to take a hard look there.

Solid work at top of the route here. He could have gone in a few directions here - vertical if he wanted. Strong, late hands.

We could use a little of this

McGinn quotes!!! Love these.

Jordan Davis
Those scouts that expected him to post “freaky” testing numbers were right. His combine included a 4.78 40, a vertical of 32 and a broad jump of 10-3. “He’s a pretty upper-end athlete,” said one scout. “He’s a 3-4 nose tackle only. He’ll go second round.” Weighed 360 in mid-March 2021. Was 370 at one point during his career in Athens. Weight woes are more about his diet than any unwillingness to work. “I wouldn’t want him in the first,” a second scout said. “But if you want a guy that just two gaps and totally controls things, this guy, they don’t move him at all. He grabs the guard or center, or both of them, and tosses them off to the side. But I’ve seen him jump into the A gap and make plays. Looks like he can run, too. And he does have power pass-rush ability.” Finished with 7 sacks in a four-year career. “He’s like that fat ass from Kentucky last year (NT Quinton Bohanna),” said a third scout. “He (Bohanna) actually did pretty good (for Dallas). Davis plays a little bit harder (than Bohanna). He probably goes second round but somebody may stretch it.” If not for his mother’s insistence that he remain in school and graduate, he would have been in the 2021 draft. “He’s got the story and everybody loves him, but I just don’t know what you do with him in the modern game,” a fourth scout said. “He plays 10 games a game. He gets in and then you don’t see him anymore. He’s not in on pass downs. He’s a giant, but he has a very, very limited skill set. He can kick ass right in front of his face. He ain’t going nowhere else. He’s not going tackle to tackle or guard to guard. He’s going center to one guard for five plays a game. If you think there’s some value in that as a first-rounder, sure, take him.” Arms were 34, hands were a huge 10 ¾.

Travis Jones

Reported as a freshman weighing a roly-poly 350 before remaking his body at one of America’s most downtrodden programs. “I was going to write him off easy,” one scout said. “Big ol’ guy from UConn, this will be quick. But he’s got something to him. He grew on me. He’s active, tough, knows how to play. He’s got some jolt in his hands. Won’t be a pass rusher but he’s got some walk-back power and effort. But first round would be rich for me.” Voted team captain. Didn’t like school but was passionate about football. “He has increased his value immensely,” said another scout. “He can’t go in the first but he’s going in the second. Underachieved at UConn but he’s pretty talented. He came (to the Senior Bowl) with a purpose.” After a strong week in Mobile, he performed well at the combine with a 4.92 40, terrific agility runs and solid jumps. “He’s not a great 4-3 fit but a 3-4 team could take him,” a third scout said. “This is a strong man. He is impossible to move. He bent people over backwards at the Senior Bowl. For a 330-pound guy his feet are better than you want to give him credit for. He can be a decent first- and second-down pass rusher but he’s not going to play in sub.” Arms were 34 ¼.

Man, from their mouths to God's ears, brother. I think he's more Ted Washington than John Henderson, and I think that's a compliment. He actually might just be there or at least within striking distance of 21 in today's meme schemes. Would be the heist of the decade. Let Barmore move out to the 5, bring in say a Flowers to play the other 5 and you've got the best line they have had in a very long time.

Honestly I've been saying he'll be there or within a small trade up for us and still believe it.

You need to be different for me to like you being that big. He's a game changer on 1st & 2nd down. Exactly what we need to play our style. Great kid. You just don't see the athleticism, size and character come along often.

Exactly-planet type. I think a lot of the issues at linebacker would be alleviated if they could keep the o-linemen off of them. I think it's especially compounded by the fact that they really want to be a two-gap hybridized version of the old TCU 33. Imagine Dugger free to scrape and penetrate with no fear of being reached and stacking Judon over Barmore.

Jeez it’s like watching Edelman-lite in that USC game.

If Elam or other are there at 21, we will draft a CB. Desperate for a outside CB. Jones in the 2nd is not a huge step down from Davis. Unless BB signs a CB in FA, CB is our biggest need.

You can get corners, the body type is more within the bell curve of human size. Defensive line is the most important and rare position group in football.

I would love to have Davis so we can play nickel more, and stop the run. And I agree that Davis is a freak. I hate 2nd and 5 after the opposing team ran right up the middle of our line on 1st down. But we need an outside corner desperately.

For sure, and I completely understand your position. However, I don't think they have the personnel, even with a high value prospect on the outside, to play man for the next couple years. Which means they will have to win up front in the short term. If they had the other requisite pieces to plug in I would 100% be in agreement.

Re: the third scout here, I don’t know why Travis Jones would be that much worse a fit for the 4-3/2-4 Umbrella front that I would prefer to see than he would as a 3-4 NT… Besides, running a 3-4 front today is soooo pre-2012…

Agreed; and in a normal year most of us would be drooling for him… But we really, Really, REALLY need CBs, and Lots of them.
