OT: Russell Wilson traded to Denver

They are planning the parade here in Denver today. This team was a competent QB away from competing for a championship. Now they have an elite QB. The Donks have drafted very well and have the team around him in place. O-line is still a bit weak but Wilson is used to that. Pats should take notes from the Donks on how to draft receivers. Tickets will be hard to come by and $$$$ this coming season.

You're as good as your last game still waiting for Buffalo to punt. We are a untalented team that needs a serious infusion of Talent we might be two years away. We are FAR from the Iron of the AFC.
That's nonsense. Untalented teams don't make the playoffs.

"You're as good as your last game" said dour Pats fans after the season opener in 2003.

The last game with Buffalo was a JC Jackson int away from a possible win. Teams have bad game. The Pats had an awful game. it happens. Some really good teams lost to the Jags, the Jets, the Texans last year.

Jeuedy isn't as good as either Lockett or Metcalf. Again, he had better receivers in Seattle. It isn't like Brady going from Edelman and a bunch of scrubs to Godwin, Evans, Gronk, and Antonio Brown.
Agreed - Metcalf was the perfect Wilson deep threat as a #2 WR. He throws those high balls that receivers can sprint under - who better than Metcalf for that?

I doubt Metcalf will thrive without him.

NEWSFLASH - - Wilson is not an automatic anything. Have you seen SEA the last 2 years?
People act now like any good QB going to a good-on-paper-team will turn into TAM '20. Not likely.
I already said the AFCW will be an even race before Russell, and it still will. It's not like the Broncos are going to run away with it.

I’d argue the odds of them finishing 3rd are greater than winning it

As of right now (and that's obviously a tremendously important point), there are 5 AFC teams that are clearly above the rest:

Chiefs
Bills
Bengals
Broncos
Titans

They've done OK at WR, spent a 1st rounder and two second rounders last few years. All of them seem good, including KJ Hamler. But in the last 10 years, they've only drafted 5 WRs in the first 3 rounds. 3 of them have hit (Jeudy, Hamler and Courtland Sutton) and a 2nd and 3rd rounder have not (Latimer and Henderson). They are batting .600, which is good.

Ultimately, this deal makes me laugh a little bit because they gave up 2 1sts, 2 2nds and Noah Fant, who is very good. That's 5 good assets. If you're rebuilding, then Seattle is in a good place.

But Denver has heavily constrained themselves here. Not only by having a huge contract in Wilson, but they are not bringing any prime new guys into the team who will play for rookie contracts.

What the Broncos gave up for Wilson.....Wow!

After what Stafford did, teams are willing to pull the trigger to win now. I can appreciate that.

Following this up, the Ravens are an OL upgrade and healthy L. Jackson away from being on that list, IMO. There's all the offseason to go but, as of now, we could be looking at a conference where there's only one playoff spot that's really open.

The Seahawks got their Jamal Adams picks back

The narrative that Wilson has declined overall (not just the end of last season) could be legit, or it could be that his style of chaotic offscript play is more prevalent all over the league and defenses are better at dealing with it than they were 10 years ago. I think he's the same, he's just not as good as everyone thinks. He's still very good though and should get Denver into the postseason but they aren't getting out of the AFC. He can't beat tough defenses from the pocket just like Arod can't beat good defenses in the NFC playoffs.

That's an interesting take that the chaos is more of a league-wide trend rather than just a Wilson trend.

I rarely saw Wilson sustain drives last year. It seems like it's always been a boom-or-bust thing with him, where the team does absolutely nothing for much the game but then hits a few huge plays for all their yardage and points. Maybe it's just confirmation bias in watching him, but it really seems like he doesn't target those 8-12 yard passes as much as other players. So much of his game depends on broken plays and a backyard football style of play.

I think he's still good. You just have to look at the alternatives; there's no way in hell Denver is winning with a Keenum or Bridgewater type of QB. It will be fun for fans to see Wilson in Denver, and that division might be the best of the salary cap era.

Teams always should have. You need a top 10 level QB to compete for titles in this league or guys like Eli and Flacco that are capable of hitting a switch in the playoffs. It’s rare to win without that.

Hmmm. I don't know if this is that great a move for Denver, or that big a threat to everyone in the AFC. Have you watched Wilson lately? Very slow start the last two years and very inconsistent play overall. I guess we'll see what happens.

I wonder if the Pats kicked the tires at all on Wilson.
