McCourty

Is anyone OK with him being paid at the top of the market?

Obviously, McCourty is past his prime, and still worth a contract for a solid veteran.

I would point out that some here expect him to play for the vet minimum.

It is the same deal with me for Hightower as well…. if both want a big pay day…they will have to find it elsewhere…I feel that it would be better for a growing team to invest their cap shares into young and upcoming players…

Both have given us the best years of their lives and rose to the occasion in big games….love em’…but not gonna give them big $$$ when we could have young pups instead….we only have 4 more seasons of Mac on a rookie deal…

I though Bill was a better to be a year too early than a year too late guy? If so then he missed the boat with McCourty.
I think Bill is both. Sometimes he lets players like Brady and Seymour walk and other times he keeps players like McCourty

That expectation is because of the CURRENT contract structure. You seem willing to ignore that. BTW.. The Vet Minimum for McCourty is 1.4M.. It's not like people are expecting him to play for a rookie minimum of 600K...

OK, I get it. You expect McCourty to play for less than we pay Williams or Davis.

Obviously, you are entitled to your expectations.

I think that a retirement is likely. If he does play, I expect 2022 compensation of at least $4.5M (for us or someone else).

This guy has been goldbricking for years. He should pay the pats if he wants to play. He's beyond washed up. Watch belichick give him a top of the market contract. He loves his old slow vets.

This is so true. And yet bb keeps bringing these oldies back year after year.

That's great... let the HOFers walk.

Harmon would be a decent replacement if DMac leaves.

I think the argument against the Big Sey trade was that it took the Pats 10 more years before they won another SB and maybe his loss was an early part of why. He was a great player.

He's a legend, but not good enough to be a starting FS for anyone who has designs on the SB.

He's a legend alright. Legend in how he's grifted tens of millions from this team. Bill likes old and slow and mcourty has plenty of that.

PFF ranks him at #82 of the free agents.

Contract Projection: Two years, $12 million ($6M per year), $8.25 million total guaranteed.

Anyone here willing to give him that? I doubt he gets it anywhere else

I’d be willing to give that to brown but not mccourty.

We don't even know if he's going to keep McCourty. McCourty could play elsewhere.

A lot of players have moved on in their final years, not only Brady, but Wilfork, McGinest, Koppen, Gronk, Law, etc.

The ones who stayed with the Patriots just seemed to retire prior to falling out of sync with the Patriots & their contract situation, like Bruschi, Mayo, etc.

I just think it's all a matter of timing, not really the degree to which Belichick likes or wants a guy. McCourty is no different than Wilfork or McGinest or Koppen.

I stand by the arguments that doing things like getting rid of Branch cost us in 2006 and that sitting Butler cost us in 2017, but overall it seems impossible to go against Belichick's handling of the roster when it resulted in 9 trips to the Super Bowl and 6 wins. While getting rid of guys like Branch who clearly deserved a reasonable contract may seem dumb in the short term, the level of discipline and consistency from Belichick allowed him to manage countless players down the line who understood the Patriots preferred depth over superstars. Sitting Butler hurts us badly in the short term, but players understood that there are strict rules and no one is above the team. That tends to sink in when a coach is willing to risk a Super Bowl victory to stay on principle. The players should have understood this when Wes Welker stuck his foot in his mouth in 2010 and probably cost us the playoff game against the Jets.

Something I mentioned a few years ago...I think Jon Jones replaces McCourty. He has the speed and agility to play FS. While Jones IMO is a great slot CB...I think he would be more valuable at FS.

I thought mills was the designated replacement for mccourty.

The only thing I would worry about is because J Jones is such a great slot corner, who can replace him?

It does feel like we have a bunch of guys who are more of the slot CB mold (rather than an outside guy), but none of them have a proven track record like Jones does. Guys like Wade, Bryant, Mills and possibly Bledsoe are all probably best used in the slot if anywhere, but that doesn't mean they'll ultimately work out there. Mills is your best bet, but I wonder if the simpler solution would just be to play HIM at deep safety and keep Jones where he is.

Wade is the X factor here to me. They saw enough in him to trade for him in camp, had a tough go of it with Covid and injuries, but if he plays to his potential I could see him becoming a good slot CB. Long way to go for that to happen though.

You should do a better job checking stuff.

Williams salary is `1.398M. Cody Davis is 1.4M. NEITHER is more than the 1.4M I suggested for McCourty.

Expecting Compensation to RAISE his cap number above 6.45M shows a lack of understanding of the cap.
