OT: Stafford a Hall of Famer?

He has the statistics, he has the ring, even if he was average he led a game winning championship drive. There is something to be said for that. He’s in, especially if he strings together a few more good seasons.

30+ twice? I will correct that. The point still stands - massive under performance.

Hes good. Not great.

I don't know if the number of 30+ TD seasons is a good yard marker for whether someone should get in the HOF. He's had three 30+ TD seasons and two 29 TD seasons. And he's already 12th in all time touchdowns and he'll ultimately get into the top 10 along with Rivers, Marino, Roethlisburger, Eli, and Ryan. If he wins another super bowl, it's almost guaranteed he'll get in. Lastly, he played in Detroit, so that has to weigh heavily in the favor of the minds of the HOF voters.

disagree.

He's a good player. threw for a lot of yards. but thats it. Until this year, threw for 30+td's just twice. He's just not a hall of fame level player. And having two rings does not guarantee selection ... just ask Jim Plunkett, and hopefully (knock wood x3) eli

edit: twice... thanks for pointing that out.
I don't think there has been a QB that has won two SB's that hasn't made it into the Hall. Interesting debate.

you picked gwd to tout, which I dont see as a particularly effective/enlightening benchmark. So he has 47 gwd... what does it matter if he has 4 of them in a season, and finished 6-10?

He will get in imo. SB win and passing yardage will be enough.

Thing is, if he's in, should Matt Ryan be in too? Ryan has the MVP.

Thoughts?

Whether he should be in is a different question.

When are the mods going to understand that this jackass is just trolling everyone?

former Patriots 1971 1st round, number 1 overall, draft pick, QB Jim Plunkett says hi

He did have 3 straight GWD this postseason vs Bucs when it was tied, down 10 vs the 49ers and down 4 vs the Bengals so that should count for something. Maybe another 3-4 solid years can give him a good shot.

so we base HoF credentials on "it should count for something"?

Guess I have a much tougher set of criteria... which is basically ... You know it when you see it...

need to weigh the positive and the negative aspects of a players career, the resume as a whole... just my ¢2

Jim Plunkett (twice), Phil Simms and Mark Rypien all aren't in. Simms and Rypien received regular season MVP vote and all of them won the SB MVP. Stafford did none of that. It took Stabler over 30 years to get in and he was all decade team of the 70's (second team tied with Staubach).

It's already going to be a joke with Ben, Eli and Rivers all getting in. The first two never would have won without those defenses and the third couldn't win with a top 5 offense and defense. I wouldn't let any of them in nevermind Stafford and Ryan.

BTW, receiver is even worse. If they're going to let every volume stat guy in then please put Stanley Morgan and Harold Jackson in. They put up 10K+ yards when nobody was doing it.

There are, though QB responsibility makes the modern debate different.

Jim Punkett (two Super Bowls)
Jack Kemp (1960s Bills, two AFL championships)
Tobin Rote (1950s Lions, one championship, one AFL championship)
Tommy Thompson (1940s Eagles, two championships)
Ed Danowski (1930s Giants, two championships)
Red Dunn (1920s-30s Packers, four championships)

Is 1 career Pro Bowl and 1 ring the criteria now?

Stafford has the most 4th quarter comebacks since entering the league in 2009, even moreso than Tommy boy. And when he's finished he'll likely be #1 in this category. All things considered, I think he's on the cusp of getting in. He has at least 4-5 years of good football left and maybe even longer. And he threw for 30+ touchdowns in 2011 and 2015 as well as this past year.

PFR says Stafford is comparable to Romo and Brunell. Like Stafford they're not HOF caliber QBs either.

Statistically, he‘s a little above average. When you count efficiency and longevity together, he’s in a spot where maybe he has a case, but it’s not like he’s near the best of his generation.

There’s no way “he’s in” right now. In 2012, Joe Flacco would have had a better claim of “he’s in” than Stafford right now. Stafford is a 1X pro bowler, 0x all-pro, career sub-.500 quarterback. The Super Bowl is a huge boost for him, but it’s possible a player is “good,” wins a championship, and falls short of Hall of Fame territory. Let’s say theoretically a guy like Vinny Testaverde won a championship with the Jets in 1998. Is he a Hall of Famer? He would have a similar claim as Stafford, based on his stats adjusted for era.

OK, does PFR take into account Stafford's super bowl win? and i didn't realize that HOFers are determined by a website...

How many QBs from this era of football do people think are going to get in? You already have the definites like Brady, Roethlisberger, and Rodgers (you can add Brees since he only retired last year). You have the almost certainties in Wilson and Mahomes. You have the trending in the right direction in Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. You have the young guys who are starting their career in the right way in Burrow and Herbert. Are they going to start putting half the league's QBs in the NFL?

Winning a Super Bowl isn't and nor should it be the threshold for a HOF career.

Knee jerk reaction to him getting a title. He is not a Hall of Fame caliber player.

Matt Ryan > Matthew Stafford.

Ryan might be a borderline candidate, Matthew Stafford is not. Whats he done that would warrant inclusion?

Has there really been a time when someone, anyone, has said Matthew Stafford is a great quarterback, who has lifted the play of others around him, really lead his team to sustained success?
Interesting topic.

I was surprised to find the following.
-Stafford who had never won a playoff game in his life before this year, now has as many playoff wins as Ryan
- Ryan has a 120-102 career w/l and Stafford is 86-95-1 BUT since 28-3 Ryan is 64-80.

No.

Stafford has made 1 pro bowl, he's never received a league MVP vote, and he's never led the NFL in any major passing category except for interceptions. So what are we talking about here?? The answer is definitely no (at this point in time).
