I rewatched the game and glanced at the all-22 on gamepass, paying more attention this time in the 3rd Q. Mahomes’ second half was so bad that I am wondering if he had a concussion. Super jittery in the pocket even with a three man rush that was getting nowhere near him, missing screen passes (seems to have been rattled by a fluky INT by a D lineman on a screen), not seeing open receivers on time that he had no problem seeing in the first half. Reid seemed to sense this and tried to run more and throw screens and it still didn’t work. A few key drops didn’t help either.

Ultimately this is a reminder that sh*t happens and winning consistently in the playoffs is really hard. I think of Brady hurting his ankle before the 07 season super bowl or Brady hurting his shoulder in the middle of the 11 season super bowl (he wasn’t right in either of the Giants SBs), Gronk getting hurt in the 11 afc championship game, or even the chiefs losing their linemen before the 20 Super Bowl. Even if you are consistently putting yourself in place the stars need to align.

Mahomes and the chiefs have put themselves in place to contend each of the past 4 years and really they came up short vs. Brady twice, were lucky to have jimmy G melt down for the one title, and had a an meltdown of their own this year (after being somewhat lucky to win in the prior round). Overall seems par for the course - not particularly lucky or unlucky. If Brady weren’t in the league they probably would’ve won 2-3 out of 4 years. Going forward the key question is how long this current run can be maintained and whether the organization can restock the roster to compete over the long haul. The range of outcomes is probably Brees/Rodgers (long periods of contention but only 1 title) - Montana (multiple titles over a 10+ year stretch), with the likely answer somewhere in between. That’s a pretty good outlook for Chiefs fans!

But what Tom and Bill did for two decades isn’t going to be matched, at least not by that organization. They’ve already shown more short term thinking than Bill ever did (win now vs. sustainable), and Mahomes’ play style doesn’t lend itself to longevity like Tom.
