I understand the desire to overhaul the defense. However, in a league where offense matters significantly more the pats aren’t close to these teams.

Sort of underlines the current situation.

100%. Gone are the days when you can win with toughness, grit, and defense. the rules are so slanted towards offense you need to exploit the rules with the passing game and quarterback play. The Pats have a guy behind center who could be a good player for 10 years. But the talent on the outside,TE and slot is severely lacking compared to other teams.
I am very concerned that Coach Bill thinks this team is better than it really is - he certainly coached like it, thinking they can win 20-17 every week. you need to score points in today's NFL and coach bill was way too conservative.

Cupboard isn't bare in NE though. Top shelf RBs in Harris and Rham, and Henry is certainly among the better TEs in the league. Bourne proved he can ball, that'll become more evident as Mac progresses. Meyers is a solid complementary piece.

I mean, Mac had a decent rookie season with that group. If the group stunk then Mac would have had a Zach Wilson or Trevor Lawrence type of rookie season. So the cupboard isn't bare.

Still, I think adding a guy a clear cut above Bourne would help exponentially, and I'd absolutely love to see that happen.

how many of those teams have a defensive roster with as much age as the pats?

how many of those D-fronts have more talent than the Pats?

offense is much closer to where it needs to be than the defense.....

Exactly. Pats offense can do the job with one addition + Mac's growth. The defense on the other hand...
