Is it a good idea to try to sign JC Jackson before year ends?

In a perfect world, the Patriots extend Jackson. But, BB is on an island. I have no clue to his direction, oversight or control. What I do know is his results. In BB we trust.

It is but he probably isn't accepting it.

In the end Jackson will likely get paid by the Patriots to a huge deal because the Patriots don't have a replacement for Jackson on the roster.

Backloaded.
The Pats let plenty of players go without a replacement. Brady, Gronk and Gilmore are the latest. If form holds true the Pats will let Jackson walk rather than pay him market value.

From an asset management perspective, at a minimum they will slap the tag on him. If they make the moves I think they will they should be around $40m under the cap before tagging JC. That'll keep JC under team control and allow them to make a couple solid but unspectacular moves in FA while they sort out keeping him here long term or trading him for potentially multiple picks.

The Lambs forked over 2 firsts and a fourth for Jalen Ramsey AND paid him. Losing JC would suck but if they draft well it could work out. I can totally see BB doing that.

If they were close on a price point he'd probably already be extended.

What bidding? The Pats are going to slap the franchise tag on him if they don't get a contract done..
Not saying you're wrong but you seem quite confident in this.

I don't think they'll let him walk away outright because, given their FA spree, they wouldn't even get a comp pick for him. So yes, I expect an extension or a tag-and-possibly-trade.

They aren't sniffing a comp pick next year, certainly not a high one) after Judon, Henry, Smith, Godchaux, Mills, et al.

Exactly.

Last time Belichick let a number 1 corner go with no replacement it was Asante and the defense spent 4.5 years lost in the wilderness with the most frustrating pass defense I’d ever seen until they traded for Talib. It SEEMED like they got their franchise pro bowl corner with Devin in 2010 but that ended up being the most illusory year I can recall a player having.

The real losers are the teams that ignored him last off-season as it was everybody. It was quite surprising his market was non existent.

the patriots could have matched any offer. In addition, if they gave a big offer, they would still need to have sent us a draft choice.

The patriots might have kept the 2021 compensation the same as he ended up with, plus signed an $18M-$20M extension with guarantees. The patriots had the best opportunity to keep him.

Many, many here said a firm "no", wanting to wait to see another great year. They got their wish, and maybe this year compensation plus a 2022 tag really made a lot a sense (with a very inexpensive 2021 and no 2022 guarantees).

The fact there was no interest for a playmaking CB who can play in any scheme was bizarre. We should thank the other 31. He was tendered a 2nd round pick. If a team came in and offered $14-$16M per year which I think was fair at that time, does Jackson accept it? Does Bill match it?

I think he gets $18M+ per year. If he ends the year the way he’s playing now...he could exceed $20M per year.

Hopefully he goes up against Brown Sunday and I’m excited to see his rematch with Diggs on MNF.

In the end, does it really make a difference?

He can still hold out and demand more money towards the end of his deal like Gilmore did.

Hope we can work out a long term deal with him:

Absolutely. We already had the same stupid John carroll deja vu busting on a 1st round RB (Maroney, Michel), 1st round WR (Chad Jackson, NKeal), two 3rd round TEs (Dave Thomas, Garrett Mills, Asiasi, Keene) from 2006-2008 and then again 2016-2019.

Do not make the same mistake and let your ballhawk CB1 go again and end up with a crap soft zone secondary that can't stop 3rd down.

.

Please pay the man.. 5 years would be great

That sounds like he’d be open to a fair deal to stay.

sign the beast!
Never believe what a player says. It’s all lip service and a tactic used by players to not burn bridges. He wants and deserves the Brink’s truck.

16.5m per year. 4yrs + 5th option.

Don't care what folks say, he is a #1 CB and he is young and more time to just get better...
If Patriots can keep the CBs & Secondary intact (mostly) Patriots will be golden for upcoming years....

Why would he leave so much money on the table? That’s $66MM for four. He’s likely looking at $82MM for four, maybe more.
