Joe Montana: Niners should've taken Mac Jones

Well, duh

No other organization irritates me more than SF. They are really dysfunctional.

Drafted a midget D lineman 3rd overall instead of Watson or Mahomes which proved to be the difference in 2019. Shanahan and Lynch seen high fiving thinking they won the 2017 draft.

Passed on Tom Brady because they didn’t want to pay him and take the spotlight away from Shanahan.

Passed on Stafford only offering a 2nd.

Could've got Jones at 12, but trades 2 first rounders for a one year player they probably could’ve gotten at 12 as well.

This is only scratching the surface with their recent bad moves.

I always knew joe was a smart man!

can’t say the same about shanahan!

they both have the same initials

It has to be brutal for him with Brady reducing his career to a footnote in NFL history.

just stop. You already admitted you were a Bucs fan in the Brady forum by referring to the Bucs as “we.” Now you are on the Pats side of the message board saying idiotic things. Montana will never be a footnote in NFL history. He's arguably the 2nd or 3rd best QB of all time.

...and he shouldn't feel that way at all.

Joe is deathly afraid of his football life reduced to being irrelevant.

It's kinda like that scene in Everyone's All American when an old Gavin Grey walks out on the field and he thinks the crowd is cheering for him but instead it was for the present day LSU team coming out of the tunnel.

He hasn't played a meaningful game since I was a senior in college for cripes sake but to him I bet it still feels like yesterday.

There is no doubt Joe Cool feels the NEED to be relevant. He needs to hear the fans still cheer for him and be admired, acknowledged, etc.

For older fans like me he is.....he's just no longer the GOAT.

Well said.

Now hes doing those dumb insurance commercials carrying luggage.

The man doesn't need the money. Christ he just made $42m when GitLab went IPO.

It‘s fun and easy to do commercials. Sometimes it can lead to other roles. That said, I don’t really care what he thinks and his comments are unfair to Trey Lance, despite his disclaimer.

Joe invested in the healthcare company so it's convenient for him.

I don't see Joe acting in movies. Hes too stiff. Plus he's 65.

I think Joe meant to be critical of Lynch and Little Shanny

Montana is desperately trying to stay relevant.

Huh?!? What did Montana do here to try to stay relevant? Montana went on a ESPN sports show and had a "hot take". That is something that literally hundreds of former players do every week on ESPN and other media outlets.

And Montana is still arguably the second best QB of all time. I don't know if he needs to struggle to stay relevant.

Is Peyton Manning desperate to stay relevant when he does the Manningcasts with his brother? Is Julian Edelman desperate to stay relevant because he is an analyst on Inside the NFL. Montana is now a paid on air personality for ESPN+. That is what a lot of former players do. They work in the media and give hot takes for a living.

I honestly don't get why Patriots fans get their underwear twisted over Montana. There's even a thread in the Brady forum about how Montana is jealous of Brady - seriously, who cares? The whole point of this thread was Mac Jones and how he has emerged as the best QB of last year's draft. We should be happy with Montana's take.

Some Brady fans are upset that Montana said that Brady could play to he is 60 because you cannot touch the QB these days? That isn't even a hot take. It is a fact that QBs are more protected than they were back in the 90s.

All Montana was saying that the rules today to protect QBs mean that QBs are more likely to have longer careers. That is the fact. I didn't take it as sour grapes other than maybe he is jealous that QBs like Brady are protected today while Montana's body was wrecked during an era where the QBs had far fewer protections.

I know these Brady fans took it as Montana taking a swipe at Brady and trying to downplay his accomplishments, but there nothing in his comments that remotely suggest that.
