Game Day Thread Official Post Game Thread- Pats beat the Chargers

THIS IS OUR LIVE GAME DAY THREAD:

This is where we gather to follow things on Game Day. Obviously, emotions tend to be high so if anyone gets a little crazy, the use of the “Mute” button is encouraged on anyone who may be annoying to you to control your experience and to allow the moderators to also enjoy the game.

At the same time, please take a deep breath before over-reacting for the sake of making this a pleasant experience for everyone.

You Brady haters make me laugh.
>Brady lover.
How about we all enjoy a great Pats win instead of stirring up anti-Bill or anti-Tom crap every week in every thread?
I'm taking pot shots at the Team Tomers/Anti-Billers. Just having some fun with it, not meant to upset anyone.
It makes me think you guys are defensive about Bob & Bill's Biggest Blunder.
Tom is very happy where he is now; I know that Bob & Bill could have done whatever it takes to keep him here but Tom was so unhappy.

Bob blew it with AB; he had a chance to employ intelligence, awareness and comprehend nuance in players' behavior and circumstances and, as with our logo and uniforms, completely whiffed. Bill ain't perfect, either.

Finally got to watch the replay. I was out with the kids acquiring way too much candy. Mac played better than the competition percentage and the complaining on this board made it sound. Generally the right reads. Some of his misses looked like safe overthrows when he had nowhere to go with the ball. Or what about the slant pass to Bourne in the red zone that went off the receiver's hands -- could have easily been a TD, and then he wouldn't have followed up with a few more incompletions, etc. For a rookie on the road, it really wasn't bad. Not his best game of the season, sure, but not terrible by any means.
A lot of us have a problem with Josh's play calling. We just have to hope it improves.

Are you seriously saying you don’t understand how blitzing could work?
I am looking for the offense to adjust routes and throw a quick pass when it's obvious that a blitz is coming. As other posters have said they are still learning and still getting used to playing with one another.

Rewatching parts of the game and I'm reminded why I hate Wise. He isn't a pass rush threat and he gets destroyed at times in the run game. On that long run the chargers had we see how the linebackers could've played it better, but if you focus on Wise the guy is blown off the line and is still being blocked 7-8 yards down the field. Lack of stoutness is ridiculous at times. If no one believes me watch our playoff lost against the Titans and focus only on him. He hasn't improved since then.

What is it about the Chargers and losing to the Patriots on their own field, yet somehow then going off on how un-special our CBs are? Just a culture of losing and choking. Have they fielded a quality special teams unit in the last 15 years?
“You’re the sorriest corner in the league!” Lol

When even Troy Brown gets in on the taunting then you know they were real a-holes and the taunting was well earned.

Thanks for the NEM information. I remember seeing some posts with the NEM reference after he vanished but didn't know enough about him.

NEM was a former poster on this board over 15 years ago.. His hatred for ANY Pats OC was legendary..
People b!tch about McDaniels (twice).
People b!tched about Bill O'brien.
And people b!tched about Charlie Weis before him.
You go to other fan message boards and you can read the same GD thing.

If you knew the history if this and every other football message board you'd see it's infantile and easy to second guess the OC.
It gets tedious after a certain point.

Yes, I was slapping my forehead when they passed it (twice) from short and goal when they were running it so well and they have such great thumpers at RB and FB, but if the passes worked, we wouldn't be complaining.
I also wonder if this was on the job training for Mac (if it was, it's pretty ballsy).

Poor NEM took it to psychopathic levels.
Sometimes it was comical and sometimes it was sad.
He was delusional and truly believed he could be a better OC than Charlie Weis.
He would offer to meet other posters and threaten them with bodily harm.

DON'T BE A NEM!!!!

A lot of teams hold a player out the first game with the new team.
But do they usually hold them out for three games?

Gilmore was traded 10/6.

Carolina played the Eagles 10/10, no Gilmore.

Carolina played the Viking 10/17, no Gilmore.

Carolina played the Giants 10/24, no Gilmore.

Carolina played the Falcons 10/31, Gilmore played his first game of the season.

Nice try. But give it up. He wasn’t ready to go. Even if that ruins your nice narrative it is what the evidence shows. Otherwise why would Carolina be paying him to sit after they traded to get him?

I think Gilmore started the season on the PUP list which means he can not play until week 7. Being traded does not change that. Maybe Carolina could have played Gilmore last week, I am not sure, but the reason Gilmore could not play is because of the NFL's PUP rules. Gilmore might have been injured too, no-one really knows. Clearly Gilmore was not ready to practice by training camp, but if Gilmore could have started the season or not is speculation. But once Gilmore was on PUP to start the season, he is out for 6 games.

OibS has it right. CAR was constrained by previous Pats-Gilly decisions on his status.

he started playing for CAR at his FIRST legal opportunity. How much of his sit down time on NE was him and how much the injury status cannot truly be known by outsiders (m-board posters).

Thing is, in back to back weeks they've had pass plays on 2-pt conversions work, which are pass plays from the 2 yard line. So clearly they have goal line pass plays that work. Hell, they had a passing TD from the 1 yard line against the Jets last week. These ones didn't work, it happens. Maybe they were poorly designed plays, or called at the wrong time, or Mac didn't read the pre-snap matchups well enough, or any number of reasons. But the idea that it was obvious to run there, and passes are never justified on the goal line is refuted by the Meyers 2-pt later in this same game. Second guessing an OC is part of the fun, but I understand it far more for overall offensively philosophy that you can see play out over the course of a season, more so than individual play calls. That just feels like hindsight based on the 20% of information we can see from the broadcast cameras.

I don't bash Josh McD, we could do a LOT worse. But the fades and jump balls to Jakobi Myers make me scratch my head. Those plays look awful. Am I to believe those plays look great in practice but implode on game day?

I am in the camp that if you are 1st and goal on the 1 or 2 yard line then pound it in. Run a sweep, fullback sneak, whatever, but not pass.

I disagree with your point about passing for a 2 point conversion. That is 1 play for 2 yards which is completely different than 1st and goal from the 2. I understand if we can pass for a 2 point conversion, we can pass for a 2 yard touchdown, but the situations are different, so the approach should change.

“Road” win is right. I was there. That place was packed with Patriots. At least 50-50 more than 50 where I was sitting. SOFI is quite the stadium though… that video board is awesome.
I heard a report on Sirius XM NFL radio, think it was Charlie Weis, that 63% of tickets went to Pats fans.

thought you said it was the PUP designation, which dates to pre-season and locks up the first six weeks? So how was that even a question?

What that says is all the allegations that his not playing was because of contract unhappiness are pure BS.

right?

No. His first legal opportunity was week 7, against the Giants, and he still sat. And it wasn’t because he was new to the team, he’d been with them for several weeks by then.

why is it so hard to admit he was physically unable to perform, and not sulking over his contract?

Nah this is overly simplistic.

O'Brien, Weiss, Daboll, even Chad O'Shea were/are good play callers and have shown to have success elsewhere as well. Meanwhile we have a current one who rode Brady's coat tails for years and failed catastrophically 4 different times/seasons without Tom.

In different years I've also been criticial of Dean Pees on defense. Hated the soft defense with CBs 10 yards off the line. The Pats D is best in man cover1 with man press cornerbacks at the LOS. I'm not going after the oc just because he's the oc. This oc is not very bright and it's a total nightmare if this is BB's future replacement.

So let's not pretend this isn't a problem. It is. We have a staff who kept starting NKeal Harry last year until he got hurt. We have a staff who kept burying Jacobi Meyers last year for 6 weeks for no reason. This year Durant/Herron kept playing RT for no reason, and Karras was benched for 5 weeks for no reason. We have a staff who has no clue how to evaluate talent, and this also translates into lowIQ offensive play calling as well. This is what it looks like when the staff around BB isn't very smart.

Having said all this I'm thrilled with Mac Jones and the OLine has finally stabilized with Onwenu at right tackle.

He was with the team several weeks like you say, but I think because he was on PUP he could not practice for those several weeks. Some teams like having more than 3 or 4 days of practice before playing a player, so Gilmore might have played 2 weeks after starting to practice which didn't have anything to do with his actual injury status.

I have no idea how injured Gilmore was or wasn't, and it is not hard for me to admit that. I just do not know.
