Sad to see BB's legacy ripped apart like this

SB42 was all about injuries, freak plays, and terrible officiating. Spagnolo didn't coach Brady into a sprained ankle. Spagnolo didn't coach Stephen Neal into a game ending injury. Spagnolo didn't coach the TEs into injury-based uselessness.

And Spagnolo sure as hell didn't coach the officials into letting all manner of penalties go on the Tyree catch, or Tyree into managing to "catch" a ball with his helmet, or Asante into missing an INT, or Hobbs into having a lower body injury and BB calling for an all out blitz which left Hobbs 1-on-1 with the comparatively healthy, and much taller, Plaxico Burress.

And, even with all that, the Patriots were Brady throwing a deep ball just 6 inches less deep from pulling out the win.
Still believe 1) Moss could and should have had that one if he really tried to get it and 2) that was a TD if it was thrown a couple of feet further. Probably an ending that wouldn't ever be matched in pro sports given what was at stake.

Just got caught up on the last page of posts. Hmm..... if McD is going to be the successor then we don't have to spend all this time thinking about the team, anymore. It's going to go straight into the ground, this airplane is going to crash and burn. Just like Denver'10, St Louis'11, and pretty much the last 2.5 years are evidence of where this team is heading. No need to overthink it, the Patriots are going to suck (well they have already been bad since 2H'19 to now, if we're being honest)

Great. I guess that means you dont have to follow the team anymore.

As for bringing in a younger coach, I guess maybe when Bill is done we can go there. But my guess is for the sake of continuity, when that time does eventually come, it will likely be someone internally who gets the job.
Say it ain't so.

Maybe 1 foot instead of a couple of feet. :( Moss runs right through those guys to the end zone. There's a reason why Strahan said this play took 5 years off his life.

Amazing throw. 70ish yards and almost on a dime.

I've been saying for a few years that the Krafts have to FORCE Bill to accept a new GM, or Bill has to go. In other words, Bill-the-GM has to be fired. It's "what's best for the team," as we are so fond of saying around here.

the sandlot killing me smalls GIF

If Kraft breaks his deal with Belichick there will be 25 teams salivating to hire him.
That's another point not discussed...wouldnt he completely go Phil Jackson and (just like Brady) go to a team well poised to win? Why would he go to a crap team...think Las Vegas as better postured to win and available.

Watch what happens with Joe Judge - that would be my guess given that it's been somewhere he's always loved.

Yeah, but the Giants are a (way) worse talent base than even the Pats...if the goal is what many say of catching Shula...the Giants are probably further away than staying with the Patriots.

And Spags admitted he got that game plan from Romeo Crennel's defense against us in the Browns game that year. Of all people. :(

The Browns didn't have the players to run it properly but the Giants did...
And Spags is the D coordiantor for the chiefs, and was last year in the superbowl...so I guess the plan does not work without good players. Its amazing how good plans are when you have great players to run it.

The Giants opened up with a TD. The Patriots responded with a TD of their own. Neal's injury changed everything, because Hochstein couldn't handle that Giants line, that day.

I can't really feel sorry for him. He essentially ran Brady out of town. BB didn't have a back-up plan and he should have. If he didn't realize he wouldn't be "all that" without Brady, then he's a dummy and that's on him.

Sometimes the truth is fairly simple. This is much closer to being what happened than a lot of these revisionist explanations. The justification was to get rid of him to avoid a multi-year rebuild. That was back two years ago when it was believed the offensive system was a cheat code.

I wouldn't say lower your expectations, but I would tell people to try and at least understand that we're in a different period which is sometimes necessary. Without the 2000 season, 2001 doesn't happen, etc. Just like without last year's 7-9 season, Mac doesn't end up here. And we're only six games in. Who knows how the next 11 play out and hopefully this upward trajectory will at least start translating into some wins down the stretch.
Oh, look. A voice of reason appears in the universe.

The bad draft really caught up with us. Zero playmakers drafted in the last 5 years. We got lucky with UDFAs . but honestly everything else is pathetic. How come we don't even have a single bona fire star . the last one they drafted was gronk and possibly Chandler jones.

Bill the GM needs to be fired. No question about it. And can we stop with drafting DBs in second round. We are just not cut out for it. I believe the league has significantly advanced and we are playing catch up. Maybe Ernie was the moneyball guy in the back room. Scar, flores, Brady and Ernie leaving has made us such a mediocre org.

Maybe time to poach Joe Brady and make him the heir apparent

No for 20 years players left all the time....except Brady, when he left then the record fell off the table. The pats had player turnover for the last two decades, they still won...until....Its not about losing players, we always did that. It was about having a player that could cover up for mistakes, cover up for young players, cover up for players leaving and still win. That is gone.

Lets say the gave Brady two years at 50 million, where do the cuts come from the rest of the roster? So we could have had Tom but the team would have been thin. BB thought he could squeeze another year or two out of TB and went all in and it worked, He couldnt keep it going much longer.

I don't see it as sad in the least. The only thing I am sad about is the Patriots losing the last 1.5 seasons. It was fun at times to talk about BB's legacy. And I liked the idea of our team having the GOAT coach, but only if he truly deserves it. I'm never sad to see someone get the recognition they deserve, positive or negative.

If BB isn't the best coach of all time then I'm not sad about him being 'exposed' when his record, accomplishments and legacy were built upon by things he had little to nothing to do with. I'm only sad that it has to happen at our expense. If Bill really can't build a consistent winner without Brady, then he doesn't deserve to coach a consistent winner. And he doesn't deserve to have the reputation he does. That being said, it's too early to say that as of yet. His legacy has taken a hit, but it is still recoverable.
