Gilmore traded to Carolina

This team is going to have so many glaring holes to fill in the off season.

To be fair on this one, it was likely going to be a hole at the end of the year anyway. Felt like even if he came back this year, he wasn't coming back next.

I am hoping it's for more OL or WR help because that's where we need it the most...maybe Bill thought our secondary was good enough after the Tampa game and feels the cap space can be used to get help elsewhere.
I honestly have no confidence in any such explanations but that is what leaps to mind... he's been scouting the free agents all along the O line

I don't think WR yet because we don't know the production potential until O line is fixed. Also, a good O-line brings back the run threat.

Obviously, Bill's plan after handing out $165M in guaranteed money is to: TANK, TANK, TANK

Whoever said this is about the Oline must be on to something. Maybe this is a way to clear space to help out there. Maybe Brown isn't going to be back? RT is more important.

He’s not injured.

well, then, I guess nobody offered even a conditional 7th round pick

I doubt it was a situation where somebody offered something and the pats said 'nah.......we're good.....we're going to cut him instead'

This one is on Belichick. I said all along that once Brady was gone, they should have traded Gilmore last year. They could have gotten possibly a second or even a first round pick for him. I didn’t get how they kept an older player who was taking up the most cap space of any player in a several year rebuild year. Coming off a DPOY season, the Pats would have gotten maximum value for him.
Devil's advocate, end of last season he goes on the PUP list. Do teams give you a second or first rounder for a guy who can not physically perform? Would you urge BB to give a 1st or 2nd to someone for a guy just out of surgery based on past returns?

I’m not sure Gilmore will go to Tampa. Isn’t Bowles running a zone coverage system down there? Gilmore is a great man coverage CB. I don’t know if he is a scheme fit down there.

So GM Bill got absolutely NOTHING in return for 2 All Pros Thuney and Gilmore.
Absolutely abysmal roster management.

I suspect they may plan on using the money to extend JC Jackson. But they could have traded both last year at trade deadline

honestly.....I think BB did this just to trigger the pink hats

The one thing I can think of that no one else has mentioned is that perhaps NE does want to keep him but not for anywhere near this money. Breer mentioned they actually asked him to take a pay cut, but we know he’s been adamant that he wanted a big extension before he would take the field.

By cutting him, now he has no choice. He has to visit teams and find out what his worth actually is, not what his agent tells him it is. Teams will get a look at how he is physically. Obviously the cap space crunch this year will impact this process.

Then once he’s talked to a few teams Bill can come back with his original offer and say “see? Wasn’t so bad was it? Sign here.”

I’m not saying it works, but it feels like a Bill move.

Absolutely unforgiveable roster management.

lol.......unforgivable

Adding to the WHY NOW possibilities.....
Could it be as simple as Gilmore finally received a clean bill of health from team doctors allowing Bill to jettison him without the need to negotiate an injury settlement?

They’ll get a third round comp pick for Thuney.

There’s no chance he’s coming back.

That's interesting...maybe it was a mutual parting of ways for the time being.
