Game Day Thread Official Post Game Thread- Saints beat the Pats

THIS IS OUR LIVE GAME DAY THREAD:

This is where we gather to follow things on Game Day. Obviously, emotions tend to be high so if anyone gets a little crazy, the use of the “Mute” button is encouraged on anyone who may be annoying to you to control your experience and to allow the moderators to also enjoy the game.

At the same time, please take a deep breath before over-reacting for the sake of making this a pleasant experience for everyone.

I criticize players/coaches . I don’t get personal with people who post here. At least not in long time
My god.

Look. I'm sure you are a good guy. You care about your family and your career makes a difference in this crazy world.

But you are a skiddish, impatient, knee-jerk Pats Fan.

My criticism of your fandom is nothing personal.....it's strictly Patriots- related

During the game there was a stat that showed teams that start 1-2 make the playoffs 25% of the time. I can only assume that after a 1-3 start it's much less. Add to the fact the Patriots have a tough schedule It's going to be nearly impossible for them to make the playoffs.
Have to remember that teams that start 0-0 make the playoffs 37.5% of the time. (12/32 every year)

This is what a rebuild feels like. Anybody who thought we’d be 3-0 right now was not thinking clearly. Second half of the season is when we will see this team.
A voice of reason

Anyone thought all these new players with a rookie QB would fire on cylinders Day 1 was smoking crack

You need game changers. Elite playmakers.
We won superbowls because we had great players, some hall of fame worthy. We paid some of those guys pro bowl caliber money and they are not even close

this team looks like a 5-6 win cellar dweller. How is this team capable of winning big games?
Krafty Bob released the last game changer they had....AB

I really think it’s just taking time for this team to gel. There are a TON of new guys on this team. I hate to see Patriot losses, but I think this team has potential. As far as the guys who played poorly, Jonnu Smith is a special talent who had a bad game. I think he will have holy crap kind of games, but in a positive way. Today just was a bad day for him, But I have faith in him.

Mac, he’s gonna have rough days like this. I like that he fought back and got the Pats within 8, unfortunately the defense couldn’t get him the ball back when down by 8. Bad final drive by the defense to let them get a TD. They need to get that Oline figured out, or Mac is gonna suffer the consequences. It’s kinda eerie though, I remember Brady’s 1st win, he really didn’t have much to do with the win, kinda like Mac last week. Then Brady’s next game, they got destroyed by Miami and then their next loss, to Denver I believe, Brady threw 4 INTs. People we’re calling for his head after that game.

It's a ridiculous discussion. If you think we can get a better coach than Bill in here, please name him, otherwise it's a silly discussion.

That is your opinion. Which I respect that you have.

But it is also fair to point out that coaches who perform badly get on the 'hot seat' and are even fired for doing things like missing the playoffs and drafting badly over the past 8 years.

Just because you're a legend one day, doesn't mean you don't get fired or let go the next day. Just ask #12.

The discussion was not who should be the next Pats head coach, but rather should a head coach who happens to coach the New England Patriots be on the hot seat when the cumulation of his mistakes has led us to this point of missing the playoffs and possibly staring another sub .500 season in the face.

I don't see why the thread deserved censorship. But please make it clear to us at what point are we allowed to have this discussion? By midseason, only until the regular season is over and we're not in the playoffs? Some would say we already reached the point where the discussion was valid by missing the playoffs last season.

Some of us decided to wait a bit after the spending spree at the start of free agency earlier this year gave us some hope. But now in hindsight it looks like a desperate flurry of a man desperate to keep his job. I'll respect whatever demarcation you say is the point we're allowed to have this discussion, but it's fair to ask, if not now, then when?

I hope that you are right about Mac Jones and this team and that the Patriots can turn it around. But all I have is the evidence of my eyes, and everything tells me this team is half baked and it's going to go badly. Next week is the true measuring stick. If losing this poorly to the Saints doesn't motivate this team to improve, and having Tom come back to town doesn't embolden them to action, then nothing will.

Since everyone is piling on today and I don't know if I can add much to the bad things that happened today (and it was mostly bad), I am going to focus on some positive things:

  • Matt Judon - He may be the best pass rusher the Pats have had in a long time. Maybe better than Chandler Jones. He was definitely worth the money. I do think he is a bit of a liability on run downs, but that can be minimized a bit when the LB corp is at full strength.
  • Kendrick Bourne - The guy does good things when he gets the ball. I am not sure why he hasn't gotten the ball more. I think we will see him much more going forward especially now that Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry and Nelson Agholor have played so bad the last two weeks. If Agholor can play like he did week one, we may see far more three WR sets and less two TE sets.
  • Mac Jones - Yes, he made some rookie mistakes. That second pick was all on him (the first was on Smith and the third was him just throwing it up there in the final minute of garbage time) and he took a sack at the worst time, but overall I was impressed with how he played considering he was constantly under pressure and taking hits left and right and his receivers weren't getting open and dropping balls. One area where I can see Jones actually being better than Brady is his poise when he gets hit a lot. Brady has so few glaring flaws in his game, but one of them is that if he gets hit a lot that he can get rattled. Jones took more shots today that I think Brady ever took in a single game and he kept on coming back for me with poise.
  • O-line - This isn't something positive, but more about my solution going forward. I assume Trent Brown will be back next week. They need to put him at LT and move Wynn inside. Then they need to move Onwenu to RT. I think this is the best mix to fix the o-line problems. I think Brown is a more natural LT.
  • Nick Folk - I didn't like him so much his first year here, but last year and this year he has been money. It is good to have a dependable kicker. I wish he could kick kickoffs though because Bailey is just not very good this year at it.
BTW, I am not giving up on the season. I think a lot the problems they have now can be fixed. I didn't think this team was going to the Super Bowl contender anyway. But I still think they could be a playoff contender if they right the ship.

Not on day 1, but after a solid draft and spending more than $200 million in free agency, I expected they would be much better than last year with a good chance at the playoffs. The optimistic outlook is still possible but looking highly unlikely. So, yes, with this historically bad start (losing the first 3 home games has not happened in Gillette or since BB arrived), expectations have shifted.

I appreciate you responding in an intelligent manner and wanting a discussion. That is totally fair. I know as fans, we are very upset now, including myself , lol. I do think that Bill is the least of our problems however. I had these same discussions a few years ago when posters were saying that Brady should retire and that he is garbage....it's just ridiculous.

I respect your post and am always up for a good discussion/debate.

Thanks Rob for adding some positive points. I love the pass rushing duo of Judon and Uche, add in Wino and Barmore and I think we have some guys that can really get after the qb.
Was impressed with Bourne today as well!!!

True.

And what I failed to mention is the QB Bill has won these hyped up games with happens to be playing on the opposition this time.

I just have a hard time seeing the Patriots lose three home games in 21 days. Like when has that happened. 25 years ago?

Different era. No HoFer at QB to lean on.

So if your fire Bill, who is the replacement?

It's easy to say fire the coach. But how many coaches out there are better than Bill?

To fire a six time SB coach would be a very bad decision. You don't just let the greatest coach in NFL history go at the first sign of adversity.

And there would be 20 plus teams willing to hire Bill.
To be fair the Pats would have their choice out of plenty of good and young coordinators to succeed Bill. Plus McDaniels is an option.

Not saying firing Bill now is a good idea (it’s actually a very bad idea) but it’s not like they have no alternatives if they choose to do that.

Pats defense has been hungout to dry from the offense in the 2 losses

b-b-but defense didn't make a stop when it mattered at the end

defense didn't make Harris put it on the ground nor did they allow that hit on Jones that put the Saints at the 5 or made the ball deflect off Smith's hands and go for a pick-6

just think of this for 1 second, in the 2 losses the defense has allowed 252 and 259 yards. In today's NFL if you are holding the other team to under 260 yards that is normally a win

through this week (4pm games included) there'll have been 14 games so far this year where a team has held another team under 260 yards those teams are 11-3

the 3 teams that lost were

Bills (vs Steelers)
Pats (vs Dolphins)
Pats (vs Saints)

McDaniels needs to fix it or needs to be gone.

I think it’s kinda silly to suggest that Belichick’s job may be on the line. If the Pats go 1-16, then yeah, he probably gets the boot, so would the entire staff. But if they go 6-11 or 7-10, Belichick will be back next year. I think Kraft knows this wasn’t an easy fix, even with the huge amount of money spent. This will take a few years.

After next week they will be 1-3, but then the schedule gets a little easier, especially the defenses they will face. Texans, Jets and Panthers (I don’t think they are a great team) in 3 of the next 5, tough ones vs Dallas and Chargers. So I can see the Pats go 3-2 in those 5 games, and after starting 1-3 and being 4-5 at the semi halfway mark. Not great, but not horrible in year 2 of the 5 year rebuilding plan.
