Roberts low hit sack on Mac: penalty or not?

If you watch it in real time, he is going full speed, trucks our RB and is stumbling toward Mac. He did not dive at Mac's legs. He was falling down as he grabbed Mac low. He literally just wrapped him up. Did not twist him or spear him or anything.
You don’t understand the rule.
By rule if the only place you can hit the qb is low, you can’t hit the qb.
The only exception id if someone blocks you and forces you into the hit and you have no way to avoid it.
It doesn’t require diving, twisting, spearing or anything.
By the rule, Roberts responsibility is to not make contact because the only way he can is hit low.

I got it. Believe me. I am pretty much with everyone else - right call by the rule but stupid rule.

IMHO it was roughing the passer based on the rule that you can't go low. The defender is responsible for his own actions. One can debate whether or not it is a good rule or if the rules pamper the QBs, but that's not the question being asked here. It is not supposed to be called if the player was blocked into the QB, but that isn't what happened here. He barrelled over Rhamondre.

The rulebook states "A defender cannot initiate a roll or lunge and forcibly hit the passer in the knee area or below, even if he is being contacted by another player ... A player who initiates contact against a passer is responsible for avoiding an illegal act.".

And unlike most here, I'm fine with that. Keep the QB's healthy and on the field, even if it requires unusual protections for them. They are too important to everything in the NFL.

The people saying it wasn't a penalty also probably think it was right that there wasn't a flag the play before when Harris had his helmet ripped off or a flag for Roberts punching the back of Harris helmet while he was on the ground on another play
Flores got that team playing dirty
So MIA bullied the Patriots? I'm sure Belichick agrees with you. Lmao

Bad call. The only reason Roberts hit Jones knee was because Jones turned and stepped away, which makes him a runner, not a passer. If he had stepped into a throw, which is the case for which the rule was developed, Roberts would have hit him in the waist.

Incorrect assessment. Mac is behind the line, inside the box. At no point could he be nor should he be declared a runner.

The rule was correctly applied because it's on Roberts to pull up after the initial block. The rule was created for exactly this type of scenario.

You may not like the rule but it was the correct call in this particular case.

Yeah let's bring back more knee injuries to QB's, a small price to pay to improve the game. Maybe leather helmets without face masks, too? Those were the days of real football, when brain damage from regular concussions proved you were a real man.

Football is a marvelous sport, the best IMO, but if the brutality is not kept in check it will eventually be outlawed. It's already shunned by many great athletes and is over populated with kids from otherwise hopeless backgrounds.

Was Darryl Stingley an excusable sacrifice to the physicality of the game? Is Brady a fraud as GOAT because his longevity might have been enabled by playing in this new era of metrosexual football? Do you think the game would be better off if his career had ended early because of the lack of a rule so many of you profess to regret?

WTF!

Everything okay?

That's right, you were the one joking about Mac getting a career ending injury on his first snap. It *was* a joke, right?
No. I was dead serious. I ****ing hate this team. 15 years here was just a ruse. I had you fooled all this time.

This is a penalty by todays standards. Should it be a penalty? Absolutely not, but the NFL didn't ask me when making the rule.

In the last 10 years the NFL has made an emphasis on defensive players breaking down to make a wrap tackle rather than just running through the ball carrier. Too many coaches (mostly at HS and College level) were teaching defenders to run and launch themselves at the offensive player with the ball and not enough were teaching defenders to break down and wrap tackle. This is one of those times when playing to the fundamentals is much safer for players than the alternative

For those that asked what the NFL wants Roberts to do there. They wanted Roberts to break down after he ran over Ramondre, and wrap tackle Mac. If a defender breaks down in front of a player with the ball it's very difficult for them not to tackle the player above their knees and below their chest.

It sucks because we love the aggression of hits in football and these rules decrease that aggression. However, if we continued with the rules as they were a lot of everyones favorite players would get hurt and that would hurt the NFLs ratings.

Not my style to be an a**hole, cousin. But you be you.
Well, you just sent me a very weird PM asking for a truce, said you thought about flaming me (good luck with that), compared me to another poster, etc. So I’d say it is your style. Can I ask you two questions? And please don’t take them personally. They’re really for my benefit. I’ll lay off of you depending on the answers.

1) Is English your first language?

2) Are you on the spectrum? Maybe some very high-functioning Autism or Aspergers, by any chance?

Those are really the only two reasons I can think of that would cause you to miss such obvious sarcasm. So if either are the case, then I apologize. If neither are the case, then my advice would be to lighten up a bit, chief.

Most folks respond positively to outreach. You're a little lacking in the empathy department I see.

As for your questions:

(1) Yeah. 800 verbal SAT even. How 'bout you?
(2) Maybe. Hasn't stopped me from managing 5000 people. But tell me: do you find enjoyment from taunting the disabled?

Your attempted sarcasm was obvious, if more than a bit off color. Not surprised you missed mine.

What made you think I’d respond positively to to some extremely weird DM that sounded like it came from Buffalo Bill?

Often. I put in a really honest effort to taunt at least one disabled person per day. Today, I’ve taunted you and also drove past some kid with Down Syndrome at a bus stop and told him that Santa Claus isn’t real. All in a day’s work

In your case, though, it helps me understand where you’re coming from and it improves my ability to communicate with you.

I don’t think it was. But I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Of course it was a penalty. You can't lunge at the QBs knees like that. The rule is what it is, but the Palmer Rule (not Brady Rule like Trent Green inaccurately stated on the broadcast) has been in effect for 15 years.

Rodney Harrison's skirt comment didn't help with that perception.

Agreed. That was a game I was at, too. Rodney and Tedy were quick to run their mouths when each started their jobs 10 years ago. I think they wanted to show the public they weren't homers as studio analysts.
