Roberts low hit sack on Mac: penalty or not?

If you watch it in real time, he is going full speed, trucks our RB and is stumbling toward Mac. He did not dive at Mac's legs. He was falling down as he grabbed Mac low. He literally just wrapped him up. Did not twist him or spear him or anything.

You don’t understand the rule.
By rule if the only place you can hit the qb is low, you can’t hit the qb.
The only exception id if someone blocks you and forces you into the hit and you have no way to avoid it.
It doesn’t require diving, twisting, spearing or anything.
By the rule, Roberts responsibility is to not make contact because the only way he can is hit low.

And unlike most here, I'm fine with that. Keep the QB's healthy and on the field, even if it requires unusual protections for them. They are too important to everything in the NFL.

Bad call. The only reason Roberts hit Jones knee was because Jones turned and stepped away, which makes him a runner, not a passer. If he had stepped into a throw, which is the case for which the rule was developed, Roberts would have hit him in the waist.

Incorrect assessment. Mac is behind the line, inside the box. At no point could he be nor should he be declared a runner.

The rule was correctly applied because it's on Roberts to pull up after the initial block. The rule was created for exactly this type of scenario.

You may not like the rule but it was the correct call in this particular case.

Do you think the game would be better off if his career had ended early because of the lack of a rule so many of you profess to regret?

This is a penalty by todays standards. Should it be a penalty? Absolutely not, but the NFL didn't ask me when making the rule.

In the last 10 years the NFL has made an emphasis on defensive players breaking down to make a wrap tackle rather than just running through the ball carrier. Too many coaches (mostly at HS and College level) were teaching defenders to run and launch themselves at the offensive player with the ball and not enough were teaching defenders to break down and wrap tackle. This is one of those times when playing to the fundamentals is much safer for players than the alternative

For those that asked what the NFL wants Roberts to do there. They wanted Roberts to break down after he ran over Ramondre, and wrap tackle Mac. If a defender breaks down in front of a player with the ball it's very difficult for them not to tackle the player above their knees and below their chest.

It sucks because we love the aggression of hits in football and these rules decrease that aggression. However, if we continued with the rules as they were a lot of everyones favorite players would get hurt and that would hurt the NFLs ratings.

Often. I put in a really honest effort to taunt at least one disabled person per day. Today, I’ve taunted you and also drove past some kid with Down Syndrome at a bus stop and told him that Santa Claus isn’t real. All in a day’s work
