Game Day Thread Official Post-Game Thread: Week 1 - Pats lose to Dolphins 17-16

THIS IS OUR LIVE GAME DAY THREAD:

This is where we gather to follow things on Game Day. Obviously, emotions tend to be high so if anyone gets a little crazy, the use of the “Mute” button is encouraged on anyone who may be annoying to you to control your experience and to allow the moderators to also enjoy the game.

At the same time, please take a deep breath before over-reacting for the sake of making this a pleasant experience for everyone.

Nobody whos honest with themselves sees this team as a Super Bowl contender. The most important thing by far today was to see how Mac Jones played. And he was efficient. Got rid of the ball quickly, made adjustments when he had to and had no problem finding his second and third reads. I'll take a week one loss with the way the team looked.

Stevenson looked lost, i dont expect him to stay lost. He's an Ironhead Hayward and I'll be happy with that. Should have probably held onto Michel.
It’s the first game of the season. How about we play a few more games before we decide who are the Super Bowl teams, ok?

I wish BB didn’t put Stephenson on ice after the fumble. I feel like Harris was over used for a week 1 game and that contributed to his fumble.

Bigtime. Saw it last year, while the new front 7 mitigated it somewhat its going to be hard to feel comfortable in any close game
I think we did well when Miami tried to go down the field, where we struggled was with those quick slants...the quick timing patterns hurt us and our rush couldn't get to Tua. When he held tried to go down the field with the passes, our front 7 caused some problems. Bottom line is our defense will be so much better once Gilmore comes back.

Any word on Trent Brown?

So you would have given Stephenson the ball in the redzone after he fumbled and not Harris? Could you imagine if he would have fumbled a 2nd time there?

No but I would have mixed him earlier in the game and then Harris would have been fresher at that point in the game.

It’s not moronic to point out that the Pats couldn’t stop the run with the game on the line.

no, it's absolutely idiotic to say "couldn't stop the run" when outside of 1 run the only times they picked up 1st downs on the ground on 3rd and short was when they had their backup QB under center and he rode his OL's back over the 1st down marker.

lolphins were 4 of 11 on 3rd down and 2 of them were converted by QB sneak, that says absolutely nothing about the run defense, especially when they had as many negative yardage runs as they did runs of more than 4 yards, this was the their run game broken up between their 3 longest runs and the rest of their runs

3 runs- 38 yards
16 runs- 34 yards

if people want to see bad run defense go watch the game last year in miami or the game against the 49ers

I'm watching the DVR right now...Brown has been an injury machine the past few years. Herron is absolutely THIRD string. Has too little meat in the seat to start in the NFL on any O line. Number 1 priority this season...keep Mac healthy. The Herron issue HAS TO BE resolved. Unacceptable

Agree. The bench OLine sucks except for Karras. So play Karras at LG and Onwenu at tackle. Herron simply cannot play, this is a terrible movie scene waiting to happen for Mac Jones.

Calf injury didn't return. Good sign that he was on the field though and didn't go straight to the locker room...probably won't hear anything until mid week when the injury report is due.

Caught bits and pieces of game on my phone. Mac looked poised like others have said. I was cautiously optimistic about this game. I'm not surprised with the result though.

It takes time for all of the new moving pieces to click. Don't recall ever seeing everyone that played today, play together during preseason. Miscues were likely to happen. Tough loss.

We really need to stop underestimating our opponents. Concerned with lack of Gilmore and NO isn't a joke. Can't believe MIA is atop the AFCE (for only 1 game). On to the Jete.

See how easily the run defense folded when Miami easily ran for a rushing TD. And 4th quarter needed a stop to get the ball back, Godcheaux gets blown back 3 yards - game over. It is a problem. You can't use twisted math that includes a half-dozen Dolphin runs at the end just to run out the clock, to deflect the Pats defense failed in key short yardage plays.

Tough loss. I’m encouraged though. I think this is a solid team, possibly a 9-10 win team. Next week isn’t going to be easy. After a brutal start, being down 16-0 at the half, and Wilson looking bad (granted, the defense was in the Jet’s backfield ALL day), in the first half, the Jets played a much better 2nd half and Wilson threw 2 TD’s. Outscored the Panthers 14-3 in the 2nd half. Corey Davis caught both TDs. I wish we had signed him.

Mac was probably the best rookie QB today. He played extremely well today. I saw his post game press conference, and he had tears in his eyes, he was so upset, kept saying the loss was on him since he’s the QB. I felt bad for him, but it also says A LOT about him. He HATES losing, and I love that, he won’t take losing well. He really is exactly the kind of leader you want. He will get better, and I think this offense will improve pretty fast. I’m very excited about this team’s future.

Miami was 10-6 last year, barely missed the playoffs, have a good young QB and an excellent defense (Jaelin Phillips looks scary), and some good weapons on offense. Yet the Pats out passed them, out rushed them, out sacked them. Turnovers were the story. And still lost by 1 point. Heartbreaking, but not the end of the world. It’s not like we lost to a bad team.

I was disappointed they were able to go to that well multiple times with the slant, including on the last drive when it hurt the most. Thats what scares me

This loss sucks, but the damage with regards to the division is limited. It's worse for the wild card, but it's still just week one.

A loss next week, though.....

"Aside from giving up 3 huge runs, and factoring 6 Dolphin plays to run out the game clock not even trying on their part, the Patriots runD was fine except for giving up a rushing TD without challenge and every 3rd and short situation"

Since it was Mac Jones this stat probably won't be mentioned outside of this tweet but if it was Lawrence, Wilson, Lance or Fields it would be plastered by the nfl national media
This is and incredibly impressive stat 29-39 is awesome. Also read Jones was 8-12 under duress with a TD pass. Whereas Tua was 0-4 under duress. Couldn’t be happier with Jones’ first game, and he should only get better. Sure he will have some bad games, but I think the good will outweigh the bad by a decent amount. He seems like a perfect fit for this offense.

Can we talk about that Miami sequence before half when they were trying to run down the clock on our 30 after picking up the first down. Anyone have any idea what they were doing?
