Cam Released

I'm very glad Mac is starting but c'mon man. Cam was by all accounts an exemplary teammate who worked hard and when interviewed always put the team first. He wasn't good enough but the look at me thing is just crap. Also one opposition db says something once in practice and all of a sudden that's what he is. He was a poor passer with crap mechanics but he was decent in a lot of ways and deserves some respect.
Why do we bend over backwards to defend the honor of like, one of the worst QBs to ever play for the Patriots for one season?

I feel like I am in the middle when it comes to the reaction on here. I thought Cam was terrible and didn't want him as the starter but at the same time I am not dancing on his grave. He wasn't a malcontent or jerk in the locker room so I don't really feel the need to trash him on his way out the door.

Me too.

As most on the board know I wanted Mac Day 1 but if he wasn't ready I was ok with Cam....but not thrilled.

My belief is this team is well-rounded enough to have a winning season with Cam at QB.

I had nothing against Cam. He's a good soul. Hope he can continue his career.

Not that year
Rothlesberger went 15-1 and got to the AFC Championship game that year, better than all four of your QBs did their rookie year when they sat on the pine. He then went on to win two Super Bowls, which is more than Rogers or Mahomes (yet).

We can argue it for a while if you want, but really, there is no proof one way or another that playing Mac as a rookie is any better or worse than sitting him. That said, considering the QBs who are available in free agency or as potential trades, the team is better off with Mac by a country mile.

There was an awkward Mac Jones slide in the Giants game that made me that knee brace was going to play a bigger role in all this than we realized. Obviously not.

I can't remember a rookie QB even making it to the Super Bowl, never mind winning it. But then, I can't remember ever seeing a team overcome a 25-point deficit with <18 mins to play either...

This.

When dealing with human beings, there is no magical formula. Sure, there are "guidelines" and "best practices", but, at the end of the day, your development plan has to be tailored to the individual. Some are ready to step in year 1, most are not.

If Bill decided to start Mac, it is because he feels he is ready. Does it make us a SB contender? Nope. Were we SB contenders before the move? Probably not.

People seem to forget that most rookie QBs who end up starting will start on bad teams. Those who sit are generally on better teams. We are a good team with a system that fits Mac Jones, a good defense, a good OL and a good running game... and the GOAT coach. If I had to craft an environment for a rookie QB, it would be tough to do better than what the Pats can provide.

That being said, Mac will have growing pains and he won't be perfect. All I am hoping for is for the Pats to compete for a playoff spot and be ready to contend for SBs by next season. I think we have more chances of achieving that with Mac as the starter this year. He'll gain experience AND get better results than Cam would have.

I'd add that QBs are coming out of college more prepared for the pro game than ever before.

Feel the same way. It was when not if for Mac's time. Thought it could have worked with Cam but he dug his own grave last week for me, reliability is a big factor for me. On the flip side this speaks volumes and is exciting. Belichick is ruthless so if he's going this way with Mac, then it's time those videogames slightly upped their ratings of Mac Jones.

I couldn't stand that worthless overrated **** when he was here and couldn't imagine thinking less of him and yet here I am. I disliked him so much I didn't want his kid here. Sins of the father? Yeah **** em both.

I am definitely JONESING for this season to start

He was a first team all pro and a 4 time pro bowler and had career earnings of over $57 million. He wasn't overrated or "worthless". He just said something you don't like.

I was just waiting for BB to decide that Mac was ready. I hope he is, or it could be a rough year.

You clearly did not watch him play. Or do not understand what you are watching? And I do not care how much he made. That comment is laughable. And pro bowls really? That's the measuring stick? The all pro year for a bunch of picks while giving up big play after big play trying to undercut and jump routes.

Ahh yes the old "You disagreed with me so you didn't understand what you were watching!" What I do understand is that Bill thought Samuel was at least good enough to franchise tag which means he couldn't have been that bad. He was also a member of the Patriots "All 2000's Team", which won 3 Super Bowls in that span. He was also one of the top free agents in 2008 and Andy Reid (another one of the best coaches of the last 25 years) thought he was good enough to sign to a large contract.

I also left off the fact he was an All Pro with the Eagles in 2010 as well as a second team All Pro in 2009 and was the NFL interceptions leader 2x. So please tell me again how he was "overrated" and "worthless". He seemed to have plenty of worth to two of the best coaches of this era in addition to the stats and accolades. Or did Asante just hurt your delicate feelings?

To me, he'll forever be the guy who dropped a perfect season.

Agreed. That is the first thing I will always think of when I think of Asante Samuel. I just think the argument that he sucked as a player because he is an a**hole on Twitter is stupid.

His coverage skills were as poor as his opinions are stupid however, his ability to read plays and break on balls was impressive.

Asante was a good player (elite in some areas). The problem was he thought he was a GREAT player, like a shutdown corner, and wanted to be paid like it. But he wasn't Revis, Gilmore, Sherman, level. I even think Talib was a better all around player. But there's no reasonable way to deny he was one of the best at baiting and breaking on outside throws.
