OT: Fields looked really good in preseason debut

I think Mac runs the Grap Brady offense and that’s clearly what they valued.
Mac and Lawrence were the 2 most pro ready QBs in this draft.

Relevance to Pats is that we could have had him at #11 if we wanted to trade up.

There's a reason we didn't take him. Athleticism dazzles, but it doesn't last long in this league. Pocket passers (e.g., Mac Jones) last the longest and have won the most NFL championships by a good stretch.

Fields is a pocket passer though. He is not a runner. He was in the pocket at Ohio State.

He averaged 10 rushing attempts per game at OSU.

Bill should've started Stid vs the Jete and let the chips fall where they may, win or lose... And if it was lose, then the Pats might've been picking as high as #10 overall depending on tie-breakers such as strength of victory etc...

Lawrence was the best college qb I have seen since Peyton! He deserves to go first overall. But he is playing in a cookie cutter college type offense in jacksonville and may struggle to get wins!

however jones is picking up one of the most complicated offenses in the nfl at an incredibly quick rate. If he stays healthy and continues on his current trajectory, he could end up with more wins than any of the other first round qb’s.

Wilson was my favorite QB in this draft and he has a special arm.
The Jets could have something, however he could also be another Mitch Trubisky.
The big arm and deep passed are sexy.
However the way Jones seems to be not only picking up one of the most complicated offenses in the NFL he’s earning Josh and Bills trust and respect rapidly.

true! I also think the patriots players are starting to trust him as well and that is going to be huge for when he does finally start. (My guess is game 6.)

It's college. QBs tend to run when plays break down.

Look at the play everyone is referencing tonight. He stood in the pocket a very long time before taking off, only after he was hit and pressured.

By the way, Kyle Trask--who I didn't like at all because he was immobile--has the fastest release of any of these QBs. Guy is strong and let's it rip.

And--I'm not saying he is anything like one of the greatest of all time Dan Marino--but stylewise he is very Marino-ish. Husky, immobile, big arm, super quick release, looks accurate.

Jones had 2-3 rushes per game.
Fields had 10 rushes per game.

Who cares what Fields did on one particular play? That’s deflecting from the point in question. And he also had 5 rushing attempts today.

A guy who rushes 10 times per game was not “a pocket QB” in college and a game where that QB passes 20 times and rushes 5 times suggests he is not “a pocket QB” so far in the pros.

I thought Fields got really strong as the game went on. He showed every facet of his skillset, and why he was rated a top 10 pick (I know he went 11th). He looks like a much bigger Russell Wilson, similar skills. Very impressed by his debut.

That tends to happen when your opponents get sh*ttier, as they did in the second half.

what relevance does the bears qb against the lolphins backups and practice squad have to the main Patriots thread?

It’s an opportunity for some here to criticize Belichick, because based upon this week’s preseason games he clearly should have traded up for Fields and not doing so was a colossal mistake. If you agree, the OP can be found relaxing in the Tompa Gronka thread. Me? I am increasingly happy to have Mac and that 2022 1st.

More perspective:

For every 3 passes Fields threw in college, he ran the ball once.
For every 4 passes Fields threw today, he ran the ball once.

People always try to say, well, he’s great as a pocket quarterback too…but that never lines up at the pro level. If you’re bailing out of the pocket 25% if the time, that’s not good. I was glad they got Jones and not Fields, even though it won’t surprise me if Fields jumps ahead early on before fizzling out.

Taller Russell Wilson is a good ceiling comp.
On the plus side he is a strong thrower and accurate, and very fast when he runs.
On the flip side he threw what was basically an interception that was dropped, and fumbled on a run where in a real game he would have been physically mauled. He holds the ball too long for my taste. He'll be better than Zach Wilson.

Still glad the Pats have Mac, my personal preference is quick throws and a QB who is super fast in getting the ball out and that's Mac.
