OT: Official 2021 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

When Harris got that pick and long return snapping Brady’s record int-less streak I was thinking uh oh this might not be our day. Wasn’t all Brady’s fault the defense had an awful game and we saw the next season how bad it really was.

If they had to lose I would have rather it been to Fivehead and the Colts than the freaking Rex Ryan Jest. Still annoyed that the Jets talked all that trash about Brady before the game and they still beat us.

That 2010 defense was really lacking top end talent and it’s really mysterious to me why they did so well. On paper the 2011 defense should have been better but yikes water met it’s level.

I would not say Tampa went all in 2020 or even 2021. Licht has been killing the draft for the past 6 seasons now. So much of their talent they won with last year was guys on their rookie contracts and smart FA vet signings to have the perfect combo of young and vet talent.

He literally built that team from the bottom up and the cherry on top was of course signing Brady. His only real big miss was Winston but finding the franchise QB is insanely difficult. In terms of this season, he just resigned his talent and he did so on very good contracts to boot.

That is the part that always irked me about Bill. We had some very good drafts the early part of the 2010s and he did not extend that talent especially on defense (Jones, Flowers, Collins, Butler). He really didn't even try with the skill positions as no replacement for Edelman, he let Amendola walk, no replacements for Hernandez or Gronk, traded Cooks and didn't replace him. What he did to the skill positions was criminal really to Brady and to the team. He tried to draft two TEs last year and both were busts forcing him to over pay for Smith and Henry. It is what it is but Tampa did not mortgage its future at all to win last year or compete this year. It did help that the GOAT gave them a deal with his extension but then again Bill had that for 20 years.
Usually, when we think of all in, we think of situations when a team is giving away the farm for a chance at a championship.

In 2020, It doesn't look like Tampa went all in because they didn't really sacrifice much of their future because of smart drafting and vet talent as you indicated. But they did make big bets and took large risks especially at the QB position.

Tampa gave-up on a #1 draft pick QB in Winston with Elite passing and TD numbers but terrible interception issues. Instead of fixing those interception issues on a still young QB they went for a 43 year old QB in Brady coming off his worst year who might have only had one year left in the tank.
They went for Gronk, who was coming off a bad year too and retired, when they didn't need him as they had Brate and Howard.
They went for AB, a ticking time bomb, and added him to an already loaded WR room.
And a pouty Fournette, who got cut from him old team.

In 2021, they brought everyone back which the pundits said would be impossible to do. Again it didn't look like going all in cause they did it without sacrificing much. I think mostly pushing some salary down the road. The players helped as it seemed none was trying to break the bank and all took fair or slight discount deals.

NE lost faith in Brady and Tampa had it. NE didn't want to sacrifice their future or go all in. I think that is also partly why NE let talent (like wouldn't it have been wise to keep Amendola especially since Edelman has a history of injuries. Actually he was pushed out the door being constantly told he had to take a pay cut to stay) leave instead of trying to find ways to keep them.

Tampa did take some risks for sure but staying with Winston would have been a disaster. I think betting on Brady was probably their smartest move as well as Gronk. They got Fournette and AB for a bag of potatoes. What is interesting is every move they made last year worked like a charm. It was almost magical. I know a lot of it was Brady bringing everyone in together but it was something to watch down the stretch.

In terms of Gronk, he seemed like a luxury in the off-season but Howard has a history of injury issues so it was actually a really smart move because Howard went down for the season just a few weeks in and Gronk was money in the SB for them.

I don't think Bill's decision had a lot to do with the future or go all in. The cap and roster was a mess and he knew it. There was no way they could rebuild in time to give Brady the chance to win like he got in Tampa. I believe that is why Brady and Kraft's relationship is still in tact because I think Robert was honest with him and told him Bill had been crapping the bed on drafts for years and they were going to have to overspend in FA just to make the roster competitive. That gave Brady the green light to go ahead and find the best team he could to win now and he did just that.

The thread has been resurrected!

Absolutely everyone who’s said in the last decade that the NBA sucked did themselves a disservice not watching this Finals. Giannis couldn’t hit a 3 to save his life but is the most dominate player you’ll see playing straight up old school basketball. It’s extremely entertaining.

I agree. It was old school and so enjoyable without Lebron there.

First Finals in so long where there wasn’t some Super Team element with at least one team riding a superstar free agent. Also much less 3-point dependence in the series.

It would be great if Giannis starts nipping at LeBron’s heels just for the defensive hissy fits from LeBron’s stans.

Tom Brady: Teams that bypassed me know who they are, and they aren’t very smart

a/k/a Tampa Bay would like to thank a few teams for giving Tom Brady another chip for his shoulder...

Bucs have signed OL Robert Hainsey to a four year contract. Third round pick from Notre Dame is in the fold

"34 million dollars guaranteed and he can't even get a guaranteed picture in the team photo." Another classic

photo breakdown. Enjoy.

I was lol'd when I said he was the best/biggest FA ever last year.

A good piece by Hurley about Brady’s Gretzky/ Jordan quote…the whole article is good but this part stands out to me…kind of what I think, too, about the overall arrogance of organizations who think they’re going to develop “their guy” they drafted and how they’re so smart they’re stupid. And frankly, this isn’t so different from the garbage I rail about on this site when it comes to people over-complicating things and not seeing the obvious truth that QBs are straw that stirs the drink. Coaches, Scouts and GMs are subject to the same biases.

What’s most amazing: no draft comp, an affordable, discounted salary at $25M. The risk:reward on Brady was always a no brainer unless you’re one of about eight teams really set at QB.

Granted, the Super Bowl banner that will hang forever in Tampa will drive home that point on its own. But even now, as he seeks out new ways to feel overlooked or disrespected despite his utterly ridiculous success, you can bet that Brady will be tapping into that healthy competitive psychosis to once again prove that the teams who did not want Tom Brady were foolish.

So Hurley and I are on the same page with this. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, or a bad thing.

It seems like plenty of fuel for Brady’s fire. After two decades of being called the greatest draft steal in history, even The Brady 6 documentary detailing the other guys taken, and he knocks at the door, offers to play for a very reasonable salary, and gets rebuffed for Chad Pennington and Marc Bulger reboots. Lol.

I’m suspecting the mother ****er team is the 49ers…if they twice rejected him after he said he wanted to go to his hometown, and add in Jimmy G. again, I’d imagine that’s causing some animosity and need to rub it in. I’d be surprised if he’d get so fired up about Brees or even Tannehill.
