Should we extend Gilmore?

I'm sure this has been mentioned, but how much money do the Pats get back for his disastrous first year (or at least part of it) when this looked like one of Bill's worst FA signings of all time?

I'm sure everyone remembers the film reviews where it looked like Gilmore had no clue what was going on out there.

well…..you don’t pay a cb money like that to play zone

A contract is nothing without actually being paid.

They could have cut/traded him and not pay him anything in 2020 or in 2021

There is contract value and how cash payouts are dispersed, when and in different forms. Bonuses, game checks, incentives, etc.

In 2020 Gilly wanted straight cash ASAP. The Patriots were under no obligation to accelerate payment from 2021 but they did.

In 2021 he wants cash again. What we don't know is in what form.

Deal re-structures happen all the time.
Not to be argumentative but Gilmore was under no obligation to restructure his deal in 2018 or 2019 to kick cap space down the road so the team could bring in other players either.

The only reason his salary was low in 2020 is because he agreed to adjust his deal twice. They didn’t give him a raise, they gave him cash from 2021 a year early and it was smart. It made him easier to trade if that was the plan this offseason and it kept him happy in 2020.

They should just extend him, I don’t get all the handwringing with this decision. Both Ty Law and Richard Sherman made the Pro Bowl at 31, Sherman has a similar build to Gilmore but Steph is a better athlete. This will get done soon.

Should have stopped right there
I have been on the trade Gilmore train for a while. It is the smart move if you are accepting in the fact that this team will not contend in the next few years while he is still in his prime. Get value for him now while you can and try to build towards a slightly distant future where you believe you will have a chance to be competitive.

If you keep Gilmore than you are doing it to try to win this year or next year. That is the only reason to not get value now. He's 30 years old and he's going to be 31 this season. You need to decide quickly if it's worth holding on to him now or not. His value for a trade drops substancially next year when he becomes 31 going on 32. Just how it is for athletes. If you keep him then you do so because you believe he has a chance to put you over the top. That's it.

Sadly the Pats won't be winning the super bowl this year. Just not good enough, too many new pieces, QB position not good enough (and we don't have the 2000 Ravens or 2015 Broncos caliber D to put us over the top with questions at that position). If the Pats are going to win, their next chance is maybe 2022 if Jones hits. A true rookie QB been part of winning a super bowl and that won't change with Jones IMO. So if you keep Gilmore it is with an eye towards 2022 and setting that team up to really burst onto the scene.

I don't see them tagging a 32 year old CB. They'll let him walk.
I don't see them extending a 32 yo CB for more than 2 years. A one year tag, though, has less downside. One year to pay and then no dead money, say thank you, if indeed his skills erode.

Thats a big 1 year hit for a 32 y/o CB- ~$15.06m

Agree 100% but he didn't lose money in those restructures. He got his cash and didn't have to wait for it. That is key.

Good for him and the NEP were OK doing it. Win-win.

I also think the NEP will throw a couple of xtra bucks at him....whether it's what he accepts is another matter.

I'm not as certain as you are this gets done soon.

I don't agree with this. Again back to 2001. Through two games they sucked. Through 4 games they were 1-3. Through 10 they were 5-5.

And this team has a lot more talent than that team. C'mon man.

Let's not always hark back to 2001 to prove our point. That was a very weird year with weird circumstances. The big one being that no one appreciated how much impact Brady could have in his 2nd year. If you don't have a top tier QB or a QB with some realistic upside on the horizon on his rookie deal; or a monstrous defense you aren't going anywhere. If we didn't have Jones we would be dead in the water as far as our chances (unless we could convince a legit QB to sign here, which no legit QB seems to want to).

Well said. But I think we ARE going for it, whether it be with Cam or McCorckle at QB. This is also why we keep going with Devin McCourty and Hightower.

The sad part is the dude on the left was in Van Wilder as the old guy and Van Wilder was like 20 years ago.

Do we all die from this being born thing?

There are 159.6m reasons why it is clear the NEP fully intend on competing for a Super Bowl this year

I hate this line of thinking. You always build your team to compete to win the SB. Only one team wins it but if you follow this line of thinking then we should always let older players walk because we aren't winning the SB.

Right now we are rebuilding and our offseason has put us as a borderline playoff team. You absolutely keep Gilmore as he can be the difference between making or missing the playoffs. Plus, and I keep saying this but it needs to be said again and again - we have the money!!
Jones is making 4 mil. This is the time, right now to spend on your best defensive player.

Somebody said it best on PU he ain’t getting any better but he hasn’t noticeably declined. Send like a good dude too.

And to have ANY chance at the playoffs, Gilmore is the single most important player.
If hes fully recovered, which I expect, since quad injuries are easier to recover from than pretty much any other leg injury, the Patriots will have an elite defense. If no Gilmore, the D is slightly above average. No other player on O or D,has the same impact, not even the qb. And the Pats will NEVER get even close to equal value for him. He might play at a probowl level for several more years. There are PLENTY of examples.

If it happens, great but I'm not expecting and over 30yo CB to play at a ProBowl level for several more years.

Nor am I. But I do expect it this year. And possibly next.
