Reiss: Pats should Thank Niners for Passing on Mac

Sure, I agree. But by « he doesn’t need to be a superstar » I guess I meant : he can be Phil Simms with SBs rather than Marino with none. He doesn’t need to be Mahomes or Manning in terms of stats and MVPs. As long as he’s a winner.
Well it depends on what the expectations are. Do we want to be like we were the last 20 years? Then yeah he is going to have to be a superstar franchise QB. With Phil Simms we do not win 6 superbowls. There is a cap now, you cannot just stack a team, you have to have a great, not good QB, he will need to be that, again...if those are the expecations.

I have zero expectations that 2021-2040 will be anything like 2001-2020. Furthermore, I think that anyone who does should reassess. The probability of repeating that type of success is very very close to 0%.

Exactly. We need him to be great to be a true contender. I certainly don't want Simms. Lol

There is a greater chance of a whole new Coaching regime in New England as opposed to continued excellence.
I am a realist we could be looking at insert offensive assistant here.
The Joe Brady lead Patriots.
Hey you guys want Brady right?

You're awesome but I would never call you a realist. Haha.

Mac and Lance could both turnout good, they're both very good prospects... but they're prospects. It's literally written in the name. But what they have going for them is both landed in great situations, and that matters just as much, if not more than what they brought with them.

Andrew Luck was the best prospect to come out prior to Trevor Lawrence, it wasn't Andrew Luck's fault they never won a ring, it was the organization's fault. If Jacksonville is a dumpster fire, Lawrence will never reach his potential either... even if he's one of these magical unicorn "franchise caliber QB's."

That it was reported Mac Jones was desired by San Francisco, New England and New Orleans is enough for me, three of the best organizations in football can't be wrong. But he has to prove it and has to stay healthy, the draft is a crapshoot because the NFL is hard.

BB won't be around another twenty years and anyone who thinks any coach can recreate what he does just because the team has a magical franchise caliber QB in place is delusional.

How long did Jerry Jones keep the dynasty going after Jimmie Johnson was fired?

I think we need a lot more than a superstar franchise QB to be just like the last 20 years. An insane amount of luck too. Also another coach just like BB and there aren't any.

This run of dominance will never happen again.

I'm just saying that an ok guy at QB does not win in this league consistently. I do not care who your coach is. You have to have someone who...stays healthy, takes less money for the team, plays at a high level consistently, great leadership. Allows the coach to concentrate more on the other side of the ball, and has an almost obsessive quality of wanting to win at all costs.

Yes - there's only one QB like that though and he plays somewhere else now.

Mac is a first round pick so the expectation is he sticks as our franchise QB. I'm not expecting him to be Brady, nobody will ever be him.

No, thats not what I mean. I am saying to have a 20 year run like that. mac will be Mac, but fans are fans, and they get used to something and it takes awhile before the expectations drop a bit, and its unfair for the next guy, but it is what it is.

Peyton Manning first year, 57% completion, 26:28 TD/INT 71 rating. If Mac has numbers like that then yikes.

Hopefully the fans know enough to be patient with a rookie.

It was a bit different back then for passing. Guys tend to jump right him pretty well, but yeah patience is going to be needed, and that really goes for the whole team even the ones that were signed, it does not always work out when you bring in a lot of free agents.

So true. It did in 01 but that doesn't mean it will every time.

It did, but not long term, the pats had to change its philosiphy. All those players that were brought in did not last, 2002 was a mess, they basically had to rebuild through the draft for the rest of the time and the Patriots were never big free agent gets over the years. We have watched teams over the years go out and try to just rebound completely through free agency. It was good for preseason hype but not much more. Now I am not saying that it will happen with the Patriots, but you have to have a strong core to build off of, or you just get a bunch of guys and not a team.
